Zirconium-95 gives off a gamma when it decays. It decays into niobium-95, which also gives off a gamma ray when it decays.

Cerium-144 and ruthenium-106 also give off gamma rays when they decay.

Cesium-137 gives off a gamma ray when it decays too. And it is has the same chemistry as potassium, so plants take it up from the ground, and animals absorb it from plants they eat. And when you eat those plants and animals, your body absorbs it too. Then you become a walking gamma ray emitter. It's hard to hide from fallout when you are the fallout.

Strontium-90 only gives off beta rays. But it has the same chemistry as calcium, so it as well enters the food chain. It ends up permanently deposited in your bones, where those beta rays then directly bombard your bone marrow for the rest of your life (however long that ends up being).

True, but strategic nukes and some tactical nukes do surround the fusion fuel with uranium, which undergoes lots and lots of fission when the weapon is set off.

Our tactical nukes in Europe are clean though, including the new ones that the Obama Administration developed.

We are already far more advanced than other nations though. Freezing all nuclear testing gives us a permanent advantage over everyone else.

Not an acceptable option. If Russia invades the EU, we need to directly repel the invasion.

    Neither did Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

If they are airbursts, the fallout will come down far away.

The Obama Administration developed a nifty new tactical nuke that has such high accuracy that it can score direct hits on enemy forces, allowing them to be destroyed with very low yields that cause little collateral damage.

That nuke is 100% viable as a war option.

A few thousand did die in subsequent years, but the vast majority of the deaths were in 1945.

Subsequent generations were not harmed, unless they were already conceived and were exposed to radiation from the explosion from inside the womb.

I agree that there should be no new nuclear tests (unless everyone else in the world starts doing it first).

But we are already planning to reverse our arms reductions and build our arsenal back up again.

We will not be renewing the current nuclear arms treaty when it expires. We will probably be willing to go back to the previous treaty however.

Those were offensive nuclear missiles in the 1960s. That's a bit different from placing ordinary military equipment in Cuba.

You know that all of those refer to modifications of the B-61 nuclear bomb which was designed in 1963?

We let them keep combat troops and supporting infrastructure in Cuba for a two or three decades.

yea they might just add more stuff over the decades. Ukrine to russia is like Mexico to US, imagine if Mexico do a 180 decide to host russia/china military force near US border. we just gonna stand by doing nothing?

Why not? Cuba and Venezuela are not our problem.

Yes. Except for our artillery-fired weapons (which are narrower yet) every modern nuke in the US arsenal that has a diameter less than 18 inches is based on the B61.

We cared about Communism during the Cold War because they were actually trying to take over the entire planet including eventually us.

Look at how, after the end of the Cold War, Venezuela has done their very best to try to provoke us into being their adversary, and we just can't be bothered to notice that they even exist.

    And that is Trump's doing

If nothing else his return of the nuclear spectre qualifies him as the worst President in the entire world's history

It's not Trump's fault. This is Russia's and China's doing. The reason why we need to expand our arsenal is because of the renewed threat that Russia and China pose to the world.

I doubt that anyone will care.

If they make it a base for their nuclear missile submarines (as someone recently suggested), then perhaps we would begin targeting that base for a nuclear first strike.

    Otherwise, meh.

Well, Nixon did make the Soviets stop basing nuclear missile submarines in Cuba. They portrayed it as an "addendum" to the agreement regarding withdrawing the nuclear missiles from Cuba in 1962.

They're doing nothing but responding to Trump, you know that as well as I. It wasn't them who bemoaned the fact that we had all these nukes and had never used them, and he was doing that in 2016

Scary as sh*t don't you mean. I was back under the schoolhouse desk when I first heard it.

I remember thinking "well THAT ends him," but no, NOTHING beats hating the right people to conservatives, not even bringing back the End of the World

"Donald Trump asked a foreign policy expert advising him why the U.S. can’t use nuclear weapons, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said on the air Wednesday, citing an unnamed source who claimed he had spoken with the GOP presidential nominee."

That's means Joe made it up.

All the crap that Alek has in this post would be enough to fuel Russia over the winter.

Considering about 6% of actual Russian territory even touches Nato....I'd be worried ....WAY more about China.
