Almost all militias are classified as right wing extremist groups. Even if they are peaceful.

    I'm curious.

Does a person have to fight every battle on every subject? I believe in the phrase 'pick your battles', yet apparently if they didn't support something near and dear to your heart, they are pond scum.

Don't bother responding, I know the answer.

Should a non patriotic feeling person, who is in every way a contributor to society, have to face compulsory draft into the armed forces in order to fight some war or other?
What if they don't swear the oath this thread is about?

The question is- who is doing the classifying?

In today's world, we have people in government describing parents who object at school board meetings as domestic terrorists...And arsonist/looters on the street as peaceful protestors. Pretty confusing? I don't think so. I think people with poop for brains are saying those things, but unfortunately getting a venue and an audience.
I think militias can be any of many categories. The most common aspect would be that most believe that things will eventually collapse, bringing about a survival challenge where people and or government will become common dangers and police protection will fail..... Oh wait, that part seems to be already in progress. May have the order of things backwards.

What's important is that we stop pretending that the public violence, the immorality and corruption in politics are normal or acceptable, and get a handle on all that- not allow the fears of militias to become totally justified.

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, being Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

****ing hypocrites and liars, they were.

The draft is generally not active in peace times. It was in effect when I came of age, however I joined because it gave me a lot more control. I served my minimum obligation and went back to civilian life.
Personally, I think the draft is a necessary thing, but should be used only if voluntary service isn't sufficient to meet needs. Just as you pay taxes on a compulsory basis, the draft serves a purpose. If you live in this country, I don't think it's unfair you be called on to defend it. If you were drafted and refuse to take the oath it would be the same as evading the draft, and that has serious legal consequences, I think possible
prison. If you have signed up but not yet taken that oath- you are free to quit. Once you take the oath, you are not. That is the transition point.

As most people know- freedom is not free, nor is it complete for members of any society. There are responsibilities; some will step up- some will dodge.

How does that change one bit the facts presented?
Being considered "patriots" does not excuse their behavior. Lawbreakers

Yeh, surely. However, they are far outnumbered by the vase numbers of Dixiecrats in the Trump Republican Party, the definition of "winning" that one ;)!

No, it does not. However, it damn sure reduces the probability they will be lawbreakers compared to people who say screw the country, and take what you can get.
Patriotism might be thought of similar to team spirit, working together to win the game- and everyone one the team wins together. Granted, there are many levels of definition here. For me, I see patriotism as a love of country and the values it's built on, not the height of your flag pole. America- is the ship we are all sailing on. You can help keep it moving and stable, or you can sit back and ride, or you can sabotage it because you're not happy. But only a fool attacks the people who are keeping that ship afloat and safe.

We have a lot of people right now who seem to think they can hold society hostage, and we must pay them not to abuse us. They not only want that behavior acceptable- they are getting support from government in many cases. Extortion- IS criminal. We see vast numbers of incidents where prosecution is not taking place at all, or is so diluted as to be meaningless. Those responsible for that are criminals too, in my mind.
The selective prosecution that has become commonplace is in the category of sabotage- it attacks the very people who keep the nation running. None of the people involved in that are patriots.

The goal of oath keepers is to protect the country government leaders who subvert the Constitution. That subversion includes “progressive” illegal voting schemes. Fortunately, Republican controlled states are making those schemes more difficult to pull off by passing election integrity laws.

"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, being Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

In the above statement, they set a value standard for you to live up to. Did they over-estimate your capacity?

This is where it gets tricky, in the 'only following orders' kind of territory.
Also the concept of 'called on to defend it'.
First question would be 'called on', by whom and under what authority?
Then there is 'defend'. Now if me and my associates were under attack then sure defending will be necessary, but self preservation is not patriotism.
If you were 'called on' to go somewhere, like the many overseas American military forays, what if you don't see it as defending anything?
In the Vietnam war a person could be drafted against their will, and sent far away to die, on some kind of spurious say so, by somebody who may well say 'it is your patriotic duty to go to Vietnam and die for me'.
    Really?
I might well answer by saying 'No! It is your patriotic duty to not send your fellow citizens off someplace to die for whatever justification you may or may not wish to invoke. Why should I take an oath to do that?'
If as a result of that you get imprisoned it is likely to persuade you to be less loyal than you may have been before.
Furthermore if you acquiesced, what if you were ordered by a higher up to kill children by setting fire to their homes, and told not to argue but to do your patriotic 'duty'.
To me it gets pretty tricky, no way on earth would I say 'my country right or wrong', much more likely to say 'my country if right, but not if wrong'.
Patriotism seems to assume blind loyalty where independent thinking is not allowed.

    Re:
    Please clarify.

In what way are you "very troubled by what a lot of Veterans are" ?

I served from 1969 -72 and vividly remember the oath all Veterans took to protect the US against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

While I do not condone the 6 January riot I feel that the greatest threat to the US and its constitution comes from the domestic leftists.

The British wanted a better relationship with the Native Americans and to slow westward expansion. I fear that if we had stayed under British rule, a lot of evil may not have happened in this country.

However, they did rule Canada and the natives suffered over there too, so who knows

We also have a lot of people who feel they can overthrow an election using force. That is forbidden by the Constitution. I call for people to work together, to compromize, to respect others. These people are not doing that. These people and their supporters distract by pointing to others and saying they were wrong to do what they did, therefore, we can do whatever we want. That I can't find in the Constitution.

I agree. Tiki torches and yuge trump flags are pathetic ritual tropes loved by the trump rump.
