They are a free and independent state. Russia doesn't like other nations ability to defend themselves from Russian aggression, ie eastern european iron curtain. Ukraine feared the same and desired to ensure continued protection from Russia.

Im getting really tired of this position.

All of our military men and women voluntarily signed up to protect the interests of the United States and our allies. People are capable of supporting the use of the military to those ends. There is no prerequisite for service in order to support the use of defense.. or force for that matter.

And before you ask, yes I served an 8 year contract in the Army.

The initial demands were about Karelia and the main focus was there, but they did intend to take the whole country. As a matter of fact, letters collected from bodies of fallen Soviet officers were written in Swedish and intended to be handed out to Swedish border guards once they had crossed over all of Finland. USSR was about expanding their empire and Finland was on the list.

 

If Russia is not held accountable for this act of aggression it will not be the last.Russia has a huge tank force hard to beat .

I wholeheartedly agree with the last part here... for indeed the Russian bear has been teased for too long and not treated with due respect... often combined with incredible hypocrisy in the west.
On the other hand...Putin's demand that NATO be restored to its 1997 level = all Eastern European and former Warsaw Pact members should get out of the NTO is very amusing...PUTIN CAN FORGET THAT COMPLETELY!
Any action beyond the borders of Ukraine and Belarus, or from the Kaliningrad enclave, means war with the entire NATO!

To all Americans here who don’t support Russian aggression - write to your senators and US house reps demanding crippling sanctions and weapons for Ukraine. It won’t take a lot of your time, and if we bombard our lawmakers with these messages they’ll be more inclined to impose severe punishment!
