Recent polling on who is supporting sending troops.

Who does—and doesn’t—support sending U.S. troops to Ukraine

"However, Americans are uneasy with the idea of challenging Russia, a nuclear power, militarily. Just 41% of respondents told us they'd support sending American troops to Ukraine. Meanwhile, 43% of respondents said they'd be opposed to sending troops.

When it comes to the idea of sending in troops, there's a bit of a political divide. Among Democratic leaning voters, 50% said they support sending U.S. troops to Ukraine. Meanwhile, that figure is just 29% and 36% among Independents and Republicans, respectively."

To me, it's really surprising that the percentage of the population wanting to send troops is so high. 41% is not a majority, but Democrats support sending troops at 50%? That seems shockingly high. What's turned the Democrats into a party of GI Joes?

I support a no fly zone for sure, I also support sending our pilots in the sky’s to enforce it. Depending on how that went I may support ground support as well. I think russias aggression needs to be hit back so hard they cry every time the think about taking a country for themselves

Don't know the sample or parameters of the poll from the article above but I am surprised at the results as well.

    Good question.

I wonder what the numbers would look like if we had a Republican White House.

Interesting question, political and media influence is a relevant factor.

I’m against troops on the ground.
But good SAM systems would be nice. :)

I'm torn on this. This should never be allowed to happen, and I think autocrats should be toppled when they have so little regard for human life. I don't think we can let the precedent be set for dictators to be able to just grab whatever countries they want. However, the threat of nuclear war is very real.

I'm disgusted when people shrug their shoulders and say "not my problem". I think we need to do everything we possibly can, and decide what the red line is when we say enough is enough. I'm not sure what that line looks like.

It does not surprise me. I was aware they are not what the RW media paints them to be.

My opinion: No troops & No air support, but we (and the rest of the West) can help in other ways.

With them it tends to depend on what their political leaders say. If leader wants troops, then so be it, and if leader says no troops, then so be it.

I assume you mean a Republican White House with the exact same policies?

Good question. I would be curious if partisanship would make a difference all things being equal. The relatively high percentage of Democrats wanting to get involved seems to be an indicator that the answer is yes.

I don't know. Dem policy makers are not calling for troops, only the voters are. It seems they want to punch the bully in the face, but cooler heads understand it would lead to a much worse situation.

I don't think so. Biden has been pretty clear about not wanting US troops there. I'm not sure it would be any different with a Republican president. I don't think its really a partisan issue. Nobody wants WW3. Nobody wants to see these people being killed and their country reduced to rubble, especially with how bravely they are defending it. It's not easy to balance those two drivers.

My guess is the humanitarian aspect of this. This wouldn't be an imperialistic adventure like Iraq was or a nebulous war on terror. It's more straight-forward, with a clearly defined and visible enemy that we know where to find. Possibly also that for some older Democrats, thinking of Russia as the enemy wouldn't be hard to do considering they would have grown up with it.

Well this thread is about what polling shows that the people want, not the policy makers. Although I suspect if the percentage of people who want us to have boots on the ground go up, there will be more and more policy makers who will be in favor as well.

You say that "nobody wants WW3" however that isn't what this poll is showing.

There are several wars going on across the world right now, that are not triggering this "humanitarian" impulse. But I had the opposite view of older Democrats. Although there have been Democrat defense hawks, must of the party has been soft on Russia all the way through the cold war to "the 1980's want their foreign policy back." It's only been in the past few years that Russia has been treated as an actual enemy by Democrat politicians.

Wanting troops to intervene is not the same as wanting WW3. It's not nearly that simple. Personally, I'm right on the edge. Part of me thinks we should cross the border into Ukraine, call Putin's bluff, fuel all of our missiles, deploy every nuclear submarine, and launch every strategic bomber, and see if he is really willing to end the world over the Ukraine, or if he'll come to the negotiation table. The other half doesn't want to take that risk, even though it will mean the end of Ukraine most likely, and possibly motivate further conquests for Putin.

A no-fly zone is tantamount to WWIII.

Apparently MAD doesn't work anymore. It has just become a cover for autocrats to conquer whatever poor country happens to be not part of NATO.

Perhaps Republicans don't see Russia as a threat so dont want troops there.

If the poll said Russia invading helps China in the long run, I think we would get much different results.

To allow evil to persist because of fear is not the American way. Collectively we can accomplish anything, even if it required war.

Aside from a couple of tankies on Twitch, I can't remember the last time I've heard anyone on the left talk favorably about Russia. I have heard a ton of "conservatives" do so, however. Particularly Trump and his supporters.

I also think it’s a bad precedent to set to allow any country that has nukes do what Russia is doing.

Can't disagree. He is using brute force on a sovereign nation without cause.
