The @ULALaunch Atlas V rocket lifted off successfully at 5:34 a.m. EDT (09:34 UTC), beginning #LucyMission's 12-year journey to the Trojan asteroids, ancient space rocks that share an orbit with Jupiter around the Sun.

The rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carrying the first spacecraft to ever study the Trojan asteroids, which are thought to be time capsules from the birth of our solar system more than 4 billion years ago. Shortly after launch, the Lucy spacecraft separated from the rocket’s Centaur upper stage to fly freely for the first time.

After Lucy's solar arrays unfurled, cheers and applause erupted from the launch teams. And Lucy went off to uncover secrets of our universe.

I wonder if SpaceX will advance returning beyond having to splash down in the ocean at some point. They're sure pushing aerospace technology forward in other ways.

 

It boggles my mind that some will complain about the absolutely tiny percentage of public spending put into space science or even science generally, but think nothing of the massive gaping resource hole that is the military industrial complex.

 

So earthling like too. On landing, fist thing it does is take a selfie.

 

Humans on other planets is more dream fuel than it is practical or necessarily or efficient. Robots are the more efficient route, but dreams are important because they spark the ego and motivation.

 

It also has very very little to do with the behaviour of individuals, and much much more to do with corporate behaviour.

This seems like an unmitigated win for Crew-5, swapping a full-sized adult male for a petite (and pretty) woman. Should make the trip to ISS all around much more pleasant for the rest of the crew.

NASA astronaut with record for longest U.S. spaceflight returns to Earth after 355 days on the International Space Station

NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei, who broke a record earlier this month for the longest spaceflight by an American explorer, landed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday along with cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov. Vande Hei, 55, spent 355 days on the International Space Station, breaking the record held by astronaut Scott Kelly, now retired, by 15 days.

Also, let's remember that the ISS is in low Earth orbit where occupants receive significant protected from radiation by Earth's magnetosphere.

It is not comparable to flights to the Moon or Mars from a radiation perspective.

 

We are individuals, driven by unconscious survival instincts common to all of us.
But to survive on a finite planet, we need to consciously aim for universal sustainable prosperity -which can only be achieved by global governance dedicated to achieving that goal.

Otherwise individuals will always form into groups dedicated to their own self-interest (driven by unconscious survival instincts.

So we need:

1. The criminalization of war via an ICJ backed by a UNSC minus the veto, dedicated to upholding the principles of the UNUDHR. (otherwise someone will always find a reason to go to war eg Putin in Ukraine, and Bush in Iraq.

2. The globalization of MMT, so that elimination of poverty is based on mobilization of resources, not money.

As for being "environmentally responsible" - some are, some aren't, so it's important that those who are, are the same ones in charge of environmental sustainability.

 

Perhaps you've noticed the historical tendency for centralized authority to be corrupted by those such authority was intended to protect against... how do you expect this global authority to be any different?

 

Bear in mind China will have the only operative space station, when the ISS is decommissioned in the the mid-20's.

 

Via an ICJ dedicated to upholding the principles of the UNUDHR, forming the basis for maintaining international law (and crimilization of war) ...including resisting corruption by self-interested power seekers.

 

Time to move on from OT mythology, and take notice of Jesus (who was a man , not "God") who said "love God and love one-another".

And 2000 years later, we have the capability to realize Jesus' exhortation.

The idea that climate change can be solved without an active governmental direction is just plain BS.

This is a completely separate idea from whether climate change is real, like the vast majority of climatologists the world over are telling us in such a crystal clear mannter.

Anybody on any "side" (that is, for are against science) can easily see that individuals are not in a position to solve this problem. Plus, our "free market enterprise" and "market economy" are not going to drive this issue, either.
