He helped to STEAL a few things too. And publishing 'facts' about the lives of operatives
wasn't nice either. At least when Assange complained about the women publishing their
liasons with him he wasn't going to be killed.
No, I am glad he will face justice.

That's my thought too. Switzerland, Norway (perhaps) and Sweden (until recently) but slipping away very quickly.

Very much. Noone being charged in Switzerland may get 170 years of prison or get a capital punishment. Above all Switzerland has never been noticed in detaining a foreigners in third countries and then deporting them into Switzerland for prosecution.

...... or? Was it Switzerland that compelled an aeroplane from Russia to land because the United Snakes said Edward Snowden was aboard?

    EDIT: Sorry. That was Austria.

I kind of see Assange as a "fence", someone who deals with re-selling stolen goods.
Do fences steal the items? No, but reselling them is a crime, and I think most of us here agree with that.
I don't have the hatred for Assange as some here might, but he was just as guilty as any of the thieves he got intel from.

Most of the ignorant raging masses might agree - having no clue what freedom of speech-information-press is all about.. but not those who know the law .. They will tell you that publishing stolen information is perfectly legal .. even stolen confidential "Top Secret" information ruled as such by the Judge in DNC vs Trump and the Russians.

Items (or even copyright) belong to someone. Truth belongs to everyone.

I thought he was simply stating the facts about the US without any overall world conclusions.

Seeing as you are more in the know pertaining to legal matters ... here's a question for you.

Let's say the US was accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Would the US give up those documents/film footage, would the court requisition them, or would they have been destroyed in a grand cover-up?

OK -- hold on - "Know more" -- why don't you know - this is question the prophet he asks you? but this is not a question to be asked of you ..not one of your acumin .. but to be put to the media .. by what twist of fate .. does not everyone in general know about this most basic and constitutional of rights .. add important to the list.

OH .. I understand - we were in a bit of a grey area there a brief moment in time - so far down the slippery slope we have fallen - hanging off the cliff we were .. "Didn't ya know" ? and of so why not .. mon Thinamon .. now is time to put brain to task ..

12 year dey had .. teach you .. the most basic of the founding principles - yet they do not ... will not - for a reason .. now been told you .. don't forget :)

So in English .. this means that the Press has always been able to publish "Stolen Confidential - "Top Secret" information .. every ruling upholding this .. as "Free Speech" -- but the cliff we were on .. pulled back by the Judge in DNC vs Trump and the Russians .. which you should read .. the part where he rules on speech.

To your question - The US would do everything in its power to not give up those documents .. forgot when that memo came out but the rule for the first response to accusation .. Rule #1 .. Deny Deny Deny .. followed by Demonize and Deflect .. trying to think of a few more words beginning with D..:)

If History is any predictor - in Spookland ? Surely you can figure that one out without assistance - can't have missed every one of those hundreds of memos you were sent .. from the past ..all dem prophetic visions -- some must get tru.

Yes. So, Manning giving them up and Julian Assange publishing it was NECESSARY. How else could we now know so much about Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Ceausescu, Idi Amin, the Shah, Pinochet, Pol Pot, etc?

I would like to know where the line is between "stealing" and revealing to the public vital facts about what the government is doing that maybe they should know about.

I'm not sure there is really such a thing as "stealing" information. It's definitely not the same type of stealing as other physical things or money.

And I'd also like to know how some of you believe freedom of the press fits with your idea about "stealing information". Does the press have the right to publish information, or not when government has deemed it a "secret"?

I suppose one possible critical distinction is did he actually "help" remove that information from a secure government area, or did he only publicly share that information after it had already been illegally removed from that secure government area and placed in a "public" domain.

This could be a blurry line. Although some will say it "does not matter".

He helped to break into computer systems and extract information of natonal security.
He promised to redact names of individuals directly involved in this security.
But later he just dumped vast troves of information directly on the internet - names
    and all.
People died as a result. National security was compromised as a result.
That's betrayal, that's incitement to kidnap and murder. And all from a 'man' who
    is 'intensely private' himself.
Let him rot in jail. Better still kill him like many were killed by the criminal release
    of these documents.

One could imagine this is 1941-1945 and the war in the Pacific.
Julian Assange's grandfather releases information about American agents working behind Japanese lines,
American code breaker details, operational details for American carriers and so on. Would this jerk be a
'traitor' or would he be a journalist of freedom and integrity?

The answer, sadly, will depend on what you think of America and her values.

170 years in prison aint going to happen, trust me.
Switzerland keeps its head down and doesn't engage in geo-political things.
It reaps the benefits of NATO, USA military present, Western nukes etc.. and
    contributes little in return.
Had the West vanished overnight and Switzerland stood alone it too would be
forced to go after people who wanted it dead.
