A school teacher in a provincial Russian city has received a suspended sentence for speaking out in class against the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

A court in Penza, 500 kilometres southeast of Moscow, on Thursday found Irina Gen guilty of “discrediting the Russian armed forces” under a new law that has banned any criticism of the war in Ukraine and gave her a five-year suspended sentence. The 45-year-old English teacher will also be barred from working in state schools for three years.

The court in Penza found that she “disseminated false information” by telling her students about the siege of Mariupol and Russian airstrikes killing children in Ukraine.

Just a little reminder that telling the truth is a criminal act in Russia. Imagine being handed a five-year suspended sentence and being barred from teaching for three years for criticizing a war.

Come to think of it, that is the sort of thing Ron DeSantis might try.

 

That's not any different than Trump going on a rampage and firing people because we fired him. His capable staff members tried to tell him that he mishandled COVID and he made it worse by saying aloud he didn't take any responsibility.

And, look at the fallout for the truth tellers in that toxic party...

All the people with spines to walk away from his Toxic Chaos are being hunted down and kicked out for HONORING their oaths to us and our country. Pence needed to man up before the 6th but he did something right that day. Too bad the rest of them are cowering to a bully.

Not that I've heard. Far as I'm aware, all of the extrajudicial killings are taking place in occupied Ukraine, where they can then be blamed on the Ukrainians for propaganda purposes.

Bit of a difference now though - Iraq is a sovereign nation and signed its oil contracts to the French and Chinese. Opposition figures haven't been murdered by the Americans, indeed, they can run for office, and win.
Try that in a Russian ruled Ukraine.

 

Look at what happens to a narrative these days in the west. If it isn't by the left-wing nutters, it gets removed, suppressed, fact-checked & sanitised. Same turd, different dog.

 

In China - yes, in Russia - yes, but I didn't hear any case when Israeli teacher was sentenced to teaching something what is considered a truth. If you know such case - please tell us.

 

This is why I am against any law controlling freedom of speech or freedom of the press and government defining what "truth" is.

(similar issues exist with Germany's Holocaust denial laws)

But I do have to point out that telling children things in a public school is a little bit different from the issue of free speech. The government does have the right to tell their employees what they are not allowed to say on the job, and especially what they are allowed to teach in front of the class.

I'm doubtful I will too. Whatever you post hardly equates to education. Just replying to you is mind-numbing.

 

So, some Russians know what's happening because their soldiers are being killed. Is this just for teachers or none of them can speak openly against the war? How can they hide something like that from children? I recall him having some protesters arrested in the early days when families were first learning it wasn't just a special training but he can't arrest everybody. They are going to have a shortage of teachers like we're facing if he tries to silence all of them.

Does this make sense?
