It's a much better way to go thorough life than expecting danger around every corner.

When was the public disarmed in the UK? Was it recently?

Yeah, that's a **** plan. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, of course. Many of us live in large cities where this is what we call a victim mentality.

I lived in Memphis for 10 years. I worked right down town.

The door to my home was never locked, i never carried a firearm.

My car was broken into twice. The first time they broke the window before realizing there wasn't anything worth stealing. The second time i left the door unlocked, they rummaged through my console before realizing there wasn't anything worth stealing.

The Dunblane gun ban was enacted in 1996. Violent crime, including gun crime soared after the ban.

"England and Wales have the highest crime rate among the world's leading economies, according to a new report by the United Nations.

The survey, which is likely to prove embarrassing to David Blunkett, the Home Secretary. shows that people are more likely to be mugged, burgled, robbed or assaulted here than in America, Germany, Russia, South Africa or any other of the world's 20 largest nations."
The Daily Telegraph, England has worst crime rate in world, By David Bamber, 12/1/2002.

So 30 years after they disarmed the public, stabbings are at an all time high. Ok. That seems like a strong correlation.

I just know that carrying a gun doesn't stop you from getting stabbed in the back.

Yes, and very predictable, predators tend to focus on the weak and helpless targets.

Of course it is, until it's too late and you and your family are the victims of a gruesome, violent act. Having a reasonable expectation for trouble beats the alternative.

In many cases it will stop the attack if you hear the attacker approaching and have time to turn drop back or roll to the side to shoot before being stabbed.

Beyond that the community as a whole will still receive a significant benefit whenever the victim of a violent attack is able to gun down the felon. An armed public can easily keep the peace. Armed "peace officers" are clearly unable to do that.

My turn. Halloween must be really fun in your neighbourhood. I don't live in fear every time there is a knock on my door. I just answer the door. Amazingly I have never been threatened at my door. That is the beauty of hardly any guns owned in my country. You must live in a horrible country where you have to be on constant guard

Very little crime -- except in places where they banned guns, like Dodge City.

The few laws that they had were broken quite frequently.

    Hi, Ddyad.

What you say is, of course, quite true.

How it relates to attempting to reduce the number of annual gunshot deaths in the United States of America is unclear, however.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well 'n un-shot.

New York, Baltimore and Boston were far more crime ridden than the "Wild West".
    Some things never change.

“The Wild West: A time when outlaws roamed the plains, every sheriff was a sure shot and gun battles filled makeshift cemeteries with the innocent and guilty alike.

Except that it wasn't. As it turns out, this exciting period in American history wasn't as rife with murderous debauchery as Western movies and pulpy novels would have us believe.

During a 15-year period in the late 1880s, there was an average of only three murders a year in Abilene, Caldwell, Dodge City, Ellsworth and Wichita — the five Kansas cities that served as significant railroad stops. This was far lower than murder rates in the eastern cities of New York, Baltimore or Boston at the time. (The city with the most murders of the five was Dodge City, which had 17 over nine years, less than two murders per year.)”

An armed public will end almost all public violent attacks. That would reduce all violent crime. It would not eliminate all violent crime or gunshot deaths.

A significant direct government subsidy for unskilled labor would, IMO, be far more effective than any gun control law.

"The number of violent crimes and sex offences recorded by police in England and Wales has risen sharply over the past year, figures suggest.

Knife crime and robbery also increased in the 12 months to September 2017 compared with the previous year, the Office for National Statistics said.

About 5.3 million crimes were recorded in all in that 12-month period, up 14%."
BBC, Crime statistics: Violent crime and sex offences rising, police figures suggest, 25 January 2018.

so, you have been lucky that it wasn’t you that got a knock on the door and were stabbed to death.
Apparently not everyone shares your luck.
Good news! No one is worried about good guys showing up with guns! In fact they’re welcome at my house. The reason people are concerned is our cops are 40 min away and criminals don’t care about the gun laws. So, here in a country that’s nothing like yours people ARE legitimately concerned about not being victims.
So nothing you said helps someone from getting stabbed on their porch. Go ahead and get to that part.

What a load of crap! Has a US armed public almost ended all public violent attacks? The US knife death rate is similar to UK knife death rate. The US gun death rate dwarfs the UK gun death rate.its laughable that you think a gun law from last century is the cause of increasing crime that is happening now

Focus: It is illegal for Americans to carry concealed handguns in many states, and in our crime ridden DP ruled urban hell holes. Surely you know this.
