My favorite version of Over the Rainbow is that performed by "Iz." But then, I have a soft spot for all things Hawaiian.

I guess you missed my posts on this song, as well?

It would be understandable, after all that conversational posting of song "replies," not in alphabetical order, if many were unsure of where, currently, stands our letter count. And since more than my share, of those individual message posts, from the prior page, were mine, I'm posting this clarification. The last song that had been meant to be part of the count, was Falena's posting of "Luck be a Lady." So one could choose to post for "M." However, although advancing our list, hadn't been my intent, when I'd answered Falena's post for an earlier letter, I posted the song, "My Love is Dangerous," which could also be considered as covering the requirement, for that 13th letter-- if anyone prefers moving right into "N."

Here, I'll remove the vacillation, from our position:

Mother Nature's Son-- starting with this Sheryl Crow version:

And finishing with the original, essentially:

    Not Enough Whiskey

I swear I've heard a good version of this song, on one of the music shows, on public t.v. This is Kiefer Sutherland, now as a singer. I think this song is best live, but I listened to a couple of dozen versions, on YouTube, and it was always something: a lot of the time, Kiefer wasn't singing loud enough; sometimes the mike & sound equipment, wasn't so great; other times, when neither of those was a problem, there would be a lot of crowd noise, or just a low- quality recording. So I am giving you all the overall best live version, plus the video for the single (for those who want to see Kiefer), as well as just the song, without video (for those who'd rather not).

    Over My Head

Actually, though that was all I'd gone looking for, I came back with a 2-song video, beginning with a real pretty song, with Bluesy guitar, and gospel tinged, Christine McVie vocals, called, "Why." Hope you all will be as glad to have this added extra, as I was to find it.

P - La Primavera by Antonio Vivaldi

A nice performance of what might be Vivaldi's most recognizable piece:

    Quant je voy aver

This medieval tune, performed on period instruments, comes from Southern France, during the time of the travelling singers known as trouveres, or troubadours (also, in Germany, as minisingers-- I would guess the origin, or from the same origin, as for the word, minstrel). There are 6 or 7 short songs, jammed together, on this 7 1/2 minute recording. The one I am using for "Q" and to which I wish to point attention, is the 4th one (named, at top). It begins with a gemshorn, which sounds like a recorder, at the 2:53 mark, roughly, and runs about 1:45.

The first time I heard it, it sounded, and even to this day it sounds to me, like a sweet love song. As it is in some old form of French, I needed to consult the lyric sheet, to get the translation, and know the song's subject. It is told from the perspective of an itinerant musician, telling of his fondest wishes, as the season begins to turn cold, out on the road: that he will be invited in to a warm house, by a host with a well-stocked pantry. Most of the song, is just a list of a bunch of different, appealing edibles: goose, and mutton, and cheeses, "in fine wicker baskets." So, in a way, to this hungry musician, I guess it is a love song.

Some time ago my wife bought a bunch of Medieval, French Late Medieval (1200-1600), Renaissance and Baroque Christmas music by Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata. It's really interesting stuff and my hat is off to Joel Cohen for keeping that music alive. Unfortunately those recordings have become difficult to find - I guess they're all out of print - but they're worth finding and having if you're into that old period music.

I have got to credit you, with going off of the well- beaten path, for your offerings here. I do actually remember this song, from when I was in high school, I believe. It's pretty good but, if I may play record producer, I think it would have been a better song, had Big Audio Dynamite used some of that extended ending, or the like, in the middle of the song, to break up the repetitions of the rather short and simple verse and refrain. I was digging them for a bit but, as you may have seen me comment about a couple of other songs, the novelty began to feel like redundancy, and I was ready for some change, which didn't come, until the end of the song. Doing some of that in the song's center, to operate as a sort of "development," section, and then returning to the original verse & refrain, afterward, would have kept the song fresher, and more interesting.

Extra points for you, though, for getting something decent for the letter "U," at this point in the count.

agree totally with your assessment of the tune. And while I find the Joe Strummer (they co-wrote it) version better (and have posted it before in several versions) this is a much better BAD tune

    and it is a V

I'm going to toss in another, for this letter:

    Veronica

This is the version which best ROCKS; it is even a live recording, in front of a tiny, streetside crowd.

This video is good at giving context to the lyrics:

Unplugged version which, while of course having a different vibe, is still good, in its own ways.

I like the song, Wagon Wheel, and Rucker's version is OK-- I've heard worse-- but I always compare it to the first time I heard this song which, even though it was being covered by a complete unknown, that 16 year old girl, did it best. It was on a short run reality series, called "Chasing Nashville," about a number of girls picked from a local performers' competition, by a Nashville music producer, whom he gave the chance to compete to be taken on, by him. The girl's name was Julia, & her singing had real soul to it, but unfortunately, this song (from the first episode, I think) does not seem to be on YouTube. There is another time, she covers an Allison Krauss song, better than Allison Krauss. I hope, someday I'll get to hear her again, though the producer did not feel she would have really broad appeal. He'd recognized her talent, but depicted her life ahead, if she chose it, to be one of having a small following, of very devoted fans.

It was an interesting show, if you get a chance to see it.
