Once heard rape described as" assault with a friendly weapon..... "

So many people these days, finding themselves unable to make their argument successful using words legitimately, turn to distortion, re-defining and generally evading common sense.

Why do you think he is making these comments now that they don't control the House anymore? He is a politician, and he says things like this so he can say he tried and GOP wouldn't let him.

But, the AR-15 and the M16 are both black and scary, so they are the same.....

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.

I think it can. It includes semi-automatic guns, automatic guns, single shot guns, rifles and handguns, knives, shovels, hammers, frying pans, cars. trucks, ropes, etc. It does not include the definition for the first "assault weapon" ban -- it looks really mean.

There is no he anyone can possibly think semi-auto handguns could ACTUALLY be banned in this country. There is a massive difference between WANTING something banned vs ACHIEVING said ban. Even if he did mean handguns, and I have my doubts about that, it will never happen. Never. Semi-auto handguns will never be outright banned in this country. I’ll bet any amount of money with you on that.

this will not pass the house or the senate with any definition. the supreme court will overturn it if it does.

what we are doing is dividing those of us who see these shootings as a problem from those who do not care how many school children die.

i am not interested in "gun grabbing" from law abiding citizens, but if responsible gun owners do not help to find some way to separate violent lunatics and incels and gangsters from their weapons i'm afraid that at some point it will be necessary to get serious.

Most responsible gun owners realize full well that government is not able to make violent lunatics change their ways and become good citizens. There is no law that could be passed that would do that.

In ALL legislative efforts common sense demands that Utopia is not an option.

Until about 1985, the main goal of the anti gun rights movement was to ban handguns. There were groups such as the National Coalition to Ban Handguns and Handgun Control Inc. The arguments went like this

    1) handguns are cheap (some are) easily concealable (many are) and inaccurate (not true but they are harder to shoot accurately than rifles)
    2) they are the most likely firearm used in crime (true-but also self defense)
and my favorite 3) they are not MILITIA FIREARMS (nonsense but when you picture a soldier, he is carrying a rifle)
4)and finally, they are not HUNTING weapons (again bullshit but it is true, shotguns and rifles are far more popular for hunting)

The anti handgun sentiment peaked in the late 50s through 60s and the gun banners failed. So in the mid 1980s, anti handgun and far left gadfly Josh Sugarmann turned his obscure anti gun group (the Violence Policy Center) attention to attacking a firearm rarely used in crime-semi auto military styled weapons that often benefitted from the ready and cheap supply of surplus military parts made by numerous subcontractors supplying the Military market. He sent out a paper telling left leaning media types that the average voter can't tell the difference between a machine gun that the M16 is an the semi auto only AR 15 and the media should tell the public that the fanciful machine guns depicted in movies like RAMBO and other action films are what average citizens were buying.

The military term assault has nothing to do with the criminal action of assault but he noted that once again affixing the term assault to weapons that don't have the featured needed for military assault (select fire allowing several riflemen to suppress return fire from a fixed enemy position so as to allow another team of soldiers to get close enough to the position to destroy it with a bazooka or flamethrower or satchel charge) would cause low information voters to think those AR style rifles were designed for CRIMINAL ASSAULT

interestingly, this attack caused the anti gun movement to abandon its arguments against handguns since military style semi rifles are

    1) hard to conceal
    2) very accurate
    3) often used for hunting
    4)expensive
    5) rarely used in crime
    6) and are extremely useful for militia purposes

Proving that the anti gun movement will change its arguments and contradict its position in order to try to ban all firearms

I love this threat-give up some of our rights are we will take them all. and of course whether you admit it or not, that is the real goal, banning gun ownership whether immediately or by constantly demanding more and more one sided compromises because each concession gets us closer to a ban without actually decreasing crime. The stuff that decreases crime the anti gun side fights tooth and nail

no perfect solution exists, and waiting for the perfect answer is not productive anyway.

waiting for people who have been recognizably slipping into violent delusion to actually commit a crime (as required by those who demand "beyond a reasonable doubt") is not an answer either.

due process before a magistrate with a "preponderance of the evidence" standard would certainly have stopped the colorado shooter and maybe the guy at the virginia wal mart.

    uh, what?
The .223 shoots the same size bullet from the same size case regardless of which weapon is used. A smaller length barrel will cause the round to lose velocity quicker as there’s less dwell time. The longer the barrel, to better the accuracy.
There’s nothing “intermediate” about the round. None of these attributes deliver any more or less rounds in a standard mag.

35 years ago no one would have believed that states like california would force citizens to own only 10 round magazines or that AR 15 style rifles would be banned or you would have to go through a background check to buy a 2 dollar box of 22 ammo

The problem you face is that guns are everywhere, and their continued and expanding existence in our society is protected by our Constitution. Trying to separating the violent from guns in our society is like separating fish from water in the ocean.

The only way to prevent violent people from gaining access to a firearm in our country is to identify them, lock them away, and to keep them locked away until they are no longer a threat to our peaceable society. Until we are willing to do that, we will continue to suffer from their violence, and that will continue to include gun violence.

Of course, taking someones liberty involves due process, and until they have actually broken a law, they cannot be justifiably incarcerated. But the very least we could do is to keep people who have demonstrated their violent tendencies locked away until they no longer pose a threat.

The questions to answer are; 1) What percentage of violent crime is committed by the "violent lunatics" and "gangsters" you mention, and 2) why do we continue allow them to be free to roam our peaceable society committing their violence over and again?

intermediate between a pistol sized round (9mm) (45 cal, etc)and rifle round say 7.62.if you the expert would read up on the matter you will find the AR-15 type can be used with different callibers (not the length) there are AR types in NATO type 7.52 and so on similar to difference between an AK-47 AND AK-74

There will not be a federal ban on semi-auto handguns as some are suggesting will happen with Biden. Congress is split, thankfully, not to mention the SC will strike it down.

i would agree, but the standard to "lock them away" is "beyond a reasonable doubt." a schoolroom floor of chalk outlines is a little too late to "lock them away." if this guy has been psyching it up with his 4 chan buddies , or dry firing at his mom, that is the time to take him off the street, but then we need an actual past tense crime to keep him there.

Biden wants to ban 11 round or higher magazines. is there anyone who actually thinks that will do anything other than harass lawful gun owners?

Considering the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting resulted in 32 dead and 17 wounded from a 9mm handgun with 10 round capacity magazines I would say the 11 round or higher ban would not do much at all. Are there people who don’t understand how quickly mags can be swapped out? Sure….there are lots of clueless people in this world.

IMHO, we - U.S. are getting the cart before the horse. There is little doubt we have a gun violence problem in These United States. But, as this thread proves, we know little about it. Int the 50's and 60's traffic deaths were skyrocketing so the Transportation Department did extensive research into traffic and automobile safety. We still benefit from that research today with better designed highways and automobiles.

Before we go off half-cocked banning firearms we need to research why gun violence has become the plague it has. Then we will know how to improve public spaces for shopping and schools an how to deal with the American compulsion to own weapons. No gun has ever killed anything, people behind the trigger kill, which in and of it self isn't always bad. But how have we Americans gone off the rails and have begun mass murdering friends, family and people we don't even know or we have decided to stand by and allow it to happen. We need to change that. And we should start by finding out what has changed that has caused these murders to happen so frequently or at all.

    uh, not really.

5.56 has been a US military rifle round for a long time, and the 7.62 x 39 has been the choice of caliber for service rifles for many other countries.
It’s not intermediate in any way, regardless of green tip/brown tip etc.

It’s not an AR 15 if you’re using a different caliber. It can be an AR platform for which you build the rifle around the barrel and pick a different round such as 9mm or .308 or .300 BO or 6.5. I know this because there are 4 I built myself in this house, all of which host suppressors.
