That 'special perk' (I like that term!) never should have happened, and indeed today it never would. But the 60s were a different time, backroom deals with a nudge and a wink were not uncommon, and given the technology of the distribution of information at the time, it's likely that nobody knew other than those who had to. I've lived most (but not all) of my life here and had no idea Disney had such a sweetheart deal.

All I want is allodial title for my home, and turns out they've had their own State, practically if not actually, since before I was born. I was not at all happy when I heard about it, regardless of any pissing contest between them and Ron.

Funny, I was always taught that when it came to migration, we treated people from Communist dictatorships a bit differently than someone from just some random country. I know that has been loosened (or tightened, depending on your point of view) in more recent times... as just one example, it used to be if you managed to get on a raft and out of Cuba without getting shot, we'd pick you up and give you asylum, no questions asked. (Well, maybe some questions, at least enough to make sure they weren't some sort of spy if nothing else.) Today, if they catch you on the water, you go back. If you make it to land, you stay. It's called... Wait for it... The wet foot/dry foot policy.

Not sure who started the original policy, maybe it was JFK, as the timing seems right. Of course, you may be right about trying to get GOP votes, as by today's standards, JFK would have been a member of the Republican Party.

I also don't know who changed it, when, or why, but it would not at all surprise me if it had to do with the Elian Gonzalez case. But that's speculation, nothing more. Reasonable speculation, but speculation nonetheless.

A long time ago, they were a non politically aligned company that seemed to be for everyone. Now they are a woke propagandizing company that gives all their political donations to the Democrats, who lost 2/1 in the last election and they first joined in, and then jumped to lead a lying slandering disinformation assault on the Free People of Fl, who provided then this perk, because they spoke up about serious issues they saw going on in the classroom while children were attending from home on Zoom.

That caused the Free People of FL to reexamine their relationship with Disney, during which they discovered this massive sweetheart deal that may have made sense for a broadly popular non-partisan company that made no sense for the company they are today.

meatball Ron will have absolutely NO effect or influence concerning disney

he may appoint 5 people and give them a title...but they will also have NO effect on disney

Disney was around long before meatball Ron came along

and Disney will be around long after Meatball Ron is gone

this entire ordeal is just a stunt to kick off his run for president.

    let me repeat this

Nothing meatball is doing will effect Disney in the slightest

    matter of fact

I bet before this is over Disney comes out money ahead

they can raise ticket prices and blame the meatball

Lol…if Disney were smart, they would move out of Florida and let the state economy collapse.

Half a century ago, when Florida was still mostly a steamy, mosquito-infested swamp, they may have had this sort of juice... In fact, it may be the reason they got such a highly inappropriate gift of self-governance given to them, something nobody else in Florida has, and something that would never be approved today no matter who occupied the Gov's mansion.

But today, in the 21st century, losing Disney would hurt them an awful more than it will hurt Florida. You think all these people streaming into our State (1,650 every day, 365 days a year, not even counting tourists) are doing so because they long for season passes at Disney?? How many billions do you think it would take to rebuild a similar park elsewhere, and who even has close to the infrastructure they would need?

They aren't going anywhere, especially in light of this whole mess costing the CEO his job, as I'm sure the new guy (who is also the old guy) doesn't want that black eye on his record. I'd bet money I don't even own on that!

I don't know who taught you that, but Cuba was the ONLY exception.

I don't think they were picked up, but anyone was let in.

Wet foot/dry foot was Clinton policy, which ended in 2017.

It was Eisenhower. JFK was a Democrat, and its a myth that he would have been Republican. His policies on health care, welfare, taxes (90% max rate) etc would still be called "extreme left" today (everything is). So, it was Eisenhower, and it was called the Cuban Exodus. The doors were open, and they came in in 5 separate waves.

It was changed when Castro era ended and US-Cuba relations thawed.

In the 1970s.....give me a break.

Nonsense. There are 2000 such districts in Florida, and every other State has them too, especially Red States

They could get a new host, like the Bahamas, to fund most of the re-build, because it would be a gold mine for the new host.

    Oh noes!

Federal Judge Dismisses Disney Lawsuit Against DeSantis

In a victory for Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a federal judge on Wednesday threw out a lawsuit filed by the Walt Disney Company claiming that Mr. DeSantis and his allies violated the First Amendment by taking over a special tax district that encompasses Walt Disney World.

Disney said it planned to appeal the ruling.

More like DeSantis forgot "Don't bite the hand that feeds you". Florida loves Disney more than they do a fascist homophobe who squandered $160 million and didn't make it past the first lap of the race.

That is EXACTLY how it started. By people at Disney exercising their constitutional RIGHT to free speech. And Government punishing them for it. You hit the nail on the head!

If more MAGAs come to power, you can be sure this government crackdown on free speech will become national.

And if you think you're safe because YOU'RE a MAGA too, forget it! You would NEVER be allowed to criticize a government official EVER... Or you will face the consequences.

Thousands of miles of coastline and tons of other tourist attractions. If you think Disney would actually collapse our state economy, you don't have a clue about what drives the economy of Florida.

I wish they would move, move to some other state friendly to their pedophile agenda.

Disney (who have no voting rights in Florida) tries to dictate to the state what laws should be removed.
