A deluge of violent messages: How a surge in threats to public officials could disrupt American democracy

(CNN) – By the time the FBI first showed up at Kevin Patrick Smith’s home in early February, he’d already left dozens of threatening voice messages for US Senator Jon Tester.

You stand toe to toe with me, I rip your head off. You die.

FBI agents admonished Smith – who lived about a mile from the Montana Democrat’s office in Kalispell – to stop the threats, which were making the senator’s staff members afraid to come to work. But the middle-aged contractor couldn’t bring himself to stop. After 10 days, he resumed the calls in ramped-up fashion, leaving messages that now alluded to guns.

    ... https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/07/politics/threats-us-public-officials-democracy-invs/index.html

Trump embraces and encourages violent extremism and blatant terrorism. He feeds people pernicious lies to get them so angry that they threaten public officials with murder and other violence.

It's insane to me that so many Republican voters are evidently unaware of this or simply unconcerned. Maybe it's normalcy bias at play, the tendency to think nothing is wrong because things haven't been this bad for so long and it's easier to ignore the problem than address it.

No they cannot; but like all Democrat talking points, there need not be any truth. As long as the media propagates the lies, the sheeple will believe it

What frustrates me are those that think divisive inflammatory words of leaders have no influence on the attitude and behavior of their followers. I read a lot of psychology and have yet to find evidence that is true.

Nope, when it comes to Trump and ONLY Trump, guilt by association(or proxy) applies. Only in his case, do we forsake individual accountability and individual actions.

Do you really need me to quote him telling people that the election was rigged and stolen? Or the awful things he constantly says about public officials? His rhetoric is radicalizing by nature and inspires these shitbags to get violent and threaten violence. His rhetoric whipped them up into the Jan 6 riot and insurrection, and his rhetoric encourages these domestic terrorists to send death threats to public officials even now.

What do you think was the intent trump had when he told his supporters that they had to fight or they would lose their nation?

And please don’t say voting — as his word were immediately after voting ended in a way he didn’t like.

What does fight mean to you?

Not to mention his retweeting “the only good democrat is a dead one”. Can you expand on how you feel this is a peaceful remark?

If you think defending terrorists is not tantamount to encouraging terrorism, no hair has ever been split finer.

Apologies, I simply believed that most of the posters here had a general idea of what was being discussed and were well informed enough to be able to know what quote was being discussed when the word “fight” is mentioned in context of the Capitol protests.

    Since you require direct quotes:
    • “And we fight. We fight like hell And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”
    • “All of us here today do not want to see our election victory stolen by emboldened radical-left Democrats, which is what they’re doing … We will never give up, we will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved.”
    • “Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore and that’s what this is all about … We will stop the steal.”
    • “Because you’ll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength and you have to be strong.”

Can you specify what trump is commanding his magapatriot army to “fight”. Voting was over so fighting at the polls couldn’t be it.

Here is the words in the video he retweeted of one of his supporters, "The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat." — feel free to explain what they mean by this also.

Something is definitely “epic” — but it’s not what you think it is.

This is adorable. Trump does not support terrorists because he has never said the words “I support terrorists.” I wonder how many people in history have actually said those words.

I've noticed that many of our Fox viewing members frequently aren't aware of certain events involving Trump being crass, inflammatory or (most especially) completely wrong about things.

Trump promised to Pardon those from Jan 6th, these people think even if caught, their cult leader will pardon them later on down the road

Well the Nazis/Hitler never explicitly said to exterminate the Jews, they used, "final solution". Trump supporters petty semantics is in line with all their other denials about Trump.
