Parts of Britain suffer coldest summer for nearly two decades

As Britons return to work today after a soggy Bank Holiday weekend, official weather data reveals that average temperatures were significantly down on recent years.

The UK’s average temperature from June 1 to August 15 was only 57F (13.9C) – the lowest for 13 years.

For central England the average was 59F (15C), making it the coolest summer since 1993.

Helen Waite, a Met Office forecaster, said: “The average temperature for central England this summer has been just 15C – this sort of temperature is normally typical of September.

“Generally speaking, you would expect to see temperatures of at least 17C for this time of year.”

Have we lowered CO2 output, since the MMGW panic was started? If I recall, the hockey stick graph indicated that temps were steadily and alarmingly rising as CO2 release increased. I believe there was talk of disaster in 10 years. This was before the movement was renamed "climate change" to allow for cold temps being a MMGW disaster as well.

Do you own an atlas? See if you can work out for yourself the difference between "parts of Britain" and "global".

    It isn't a trick question.

Yes, it shows the UK as being on the planet. Where do you think it is?

    Why did you write that?

Why do people who know so little about a subject feel the need to offer their opinions?

WHat is this "movement" you speak of and when was it renamed "climate change". What was it called before that?

Firstly - Britain and the UK are not the same thing. Petty point sure - but ignorance really is a terrible thing.

And who ever said that every single point on the planet was to undergo some sort of steady uninterrupted warming? Are you deliberately trying to set up a strawman? Or are you just really clueless?

It's been proposed for quite some time that Climate Change would in fact lower the UK's temperatures, not raise them. The UK is kept "warm" for it's position by global weather systems.

    The groups have many names:

    Environmental groups

Thousands of protesters marched on the international day of action on December 3, 2005, which coincided with the first meeting of the Parties in Montreal. The planned demonstrations were endorsed by the Assembly of Movements of the World Social Forum.

Christian environmental groups are also increasingly active on climate change, such as The Evangelical Climate Initiative.

US Catholic Bishops also have recognized the urgency of addressing global warming in a 2001 statement from the US Congress of Catholic Bishops Global Climate Change: A Plea for Dialogue, Prudence, and the Common Good [dead link]

In New Zealand, the Climaction Coalition has blockaded the main thoroughfares of Auckland City on two occasions, calling for Free and Frequent Public Transport to reduce the city's dependency on cars. They argue that such a measure would also help reduce global warming if repeated in other cities throughout the world. [3]

Greenpeace considers global warming to be the greatest environmental problem facing the Earth.[21] Greenpeace was one of the first parties to formulate a sustainable development scenario for climate change mitigation in 1993.[22] According to sociologists Marc Mormont and Christine Dasnoy Greenpeace played a significant role in raising public awareness of global warming in the 1990s.[23]
    Academia

There are a large number of academic contributions specifically to the politics of global warming. The following are a small subset of these works:

    G8 science academies' statements [24]
Monograph by Dessler and Parson entitled The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change: a Guide to the Debate, emphasizing the complexity of the issue.
Nobel Prize winner Elinor Ostrom cautions against using single governmental units at the global level to coordinate work against global warming. Partly, this is due to the complexity of such top-level negotiations, and partly it is due to the diversity of actors that would have to be involved. Her proposal is that of a polycentric approach, where key management decisions should be made as close to the scene of events and the actors involved as possible.[25]

    Media
See also: Media coverage of climate change

The politics of global warming was raised to a considerably higher profile when former Vice President Al Gore was given an Academy Award for his documentary film, An Inconvenient Truth. Gore has made a considerable number of public appearances to promote the film and the subject-matter within it.

Other major media treatments of the politics of global warming:

    The 11th Hour
    The Day After Tomorrow
    Are We Changing Planet Earth?

You are stating the obvious and being petty by your own admission. Sad.

Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past

    By Charles Onians

    Monday, 20 March 2000

Britain's winter ends tomorrow with further indications of a striking environmental change: snow is starting to disappear from our lives.

Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain's culture, as warmer winters - which scientists are attributing to global climate change - produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries.

The first two months of 2000 were virtually free of significant snowfall in much of lowland Britain, and December brought only moderate snowfall in the South-east. It is the continuation of a trend that has been increasingly visible in the past 15 years: in the south of England, for instance, from 1970 to 1995 snow and sleet fell for an average of 3.7 days, while from 1988 to 1995 the average was 0.7 days. London's last substantial snowfall was in February 1991.

Global warming, the heating of the atmosphere by increased amounts of industrial gases, is now accepted as a reality by the international community. Average temperatures in Britain were nearly 0.6°C higher in the Nineties than in 1960-90, and it is estimated that they will increase by 0.2C every decade over the coming century. Eight of the 10 hottest years on record occurred in the Nineties.

However, the warming is so far manifesting itself more in winters which are less cold than in much hotter summers. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

"Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

The effects of snow-free winter in Britain are already becoming apparent. This year, for the first time ever, Hamleys, Britain's biggest toyshop, had no sledges on display in its Regent Street store. "It was a bit of a first," a spokesperson said.

Fen skating, once a popular sport on the fields of East Anglia, now takes place on indoor artificial rinks. Malcolm Robinson, of the Fenland Indoor Speed Skating Club in Peterborough, says they have not skated outside since 1997. "As a boy, I can remember being on ice most winters. Now it's few and far between," he said.

Michael Jeacock, a Cambridgeshire local historian, added that a generation was growing up "without experiencing one of the greatest joys and privileges of living in this part of the world - open-air skating".

Warmer winters have significant environmental and economic implications, and a wide range of research indicates that pests and plant diseases, usually killed back by sharp frosts, are likely to flourish. But very little research has been done on the cultural implications of climate change - into the possibility, for example, that our notion of Christmas might have to shift.

Professor Jarich Oosten, an anthropologist at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, says that even if we no longer see snow, it will remain culturally important.

"We don't really have wolves in Europe any more, but they are still an important part of our culture and everyone knows what they look like," he said.

David Parker, at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research in Berkshire, says ultimately, British children could have only virtual experience of snow. Via the internet, they might wonder at polar scenes - or eventually "feel" virtual cold.

Heavy snow will return occasionally, says Dr Viner, but when it does we will be unprepared. "We're really going to get caught out. Snow will probably cause chaos in 20 years time," he said.

The chances are certainly now stacked against the sortof heavy snowfall in cities that inspired Impressionist painters, such as Sisley, and the 19th century poet laureate Robert Bridges, who wrote in "London Snow" of it, "stealthily and perpetually settling and loosely lying".

    Not any more, it seems.

Dr David Viner seemed to think that global warming affects the UK climate. They were wildly wrong about snow in the UK, but most global warming hype is wrong.

When the deniers want to debunk the science they poke holes in science, when not they side with science.

Deniers or skeptics? Science is about being skeptical of theories.

So we are stifling over here in Texas, 111 on Sunday, I got sun burned when I went out to get a dead deer out of my yard that had a broken leg. I'm wondering where the global warming people are to help us and now I hear that the global warming people in England are a tad cool so they forget the whole thing. It is hot here girls. If it drops below 100 we feel blessed. I have a pool but it is too hot to get in if I could. The intense sun light had the algae grow out of control and the heat evaporates the chlorine so fast you can't keep it in there.

The forecast is for a cool 100 tomorrow, then it will plummet to 94 for two days with rain. It reminds me of 04 when we thought that it might snow.

England gets cooler so we forget about the rest of the world?

Your science is bull(*)(*)(*)(*). It (*)(*)(*)(*)ing called weather. How does it feel for you warmist to believe in a bull(*)(*)(*)(*)-Al-Gore religion? Does it make you warmist sleep better at night knowing your beliefs are killing American jobs? Warmest are a joke and the people of the world are realizing the sick eco-fascist agenda you warmist have.

    Including you?

Panic-filled environmentalists are trying radically change society and lower our standard of living based on their belief in man-made global warming.

So if anyone needs to shut up and mind their own business it is the global warming crowd.

First of all, there's no need to be so agressive.

    Secondly, I'm not a "warmist".

Thirdly, this is not about American jobs.

Forthly, where did that American "can-do" spirit go? You used to be the nation which solved problems, creating jobs in the mean time. Now, lobby groups have you name calling instead of analysing data and acting in accordance.

I couldn't agree more. Additionally science uses statistics to attempt to predict future events.

For me, I'm anti-polution. Lets put warming/cooling/change to one side and take a look at our mess in the world. That plasic soup in the pacific is going to make a mess for us soon. Plus, I like clean air. I hate oil spills (thought Americans did too).

Resolving polution would be the best way to look at this.

Then, why use deniers and not skeptics?

NASA's stats were found to be false by a skeptic.

Let's stay on topic. Please, start a pollution thread about China and India.

Climate change deniars are pretty much the same people who think "intelligent design" is a scientific counter argument for "evolution". These people use Faux Noise and Limbuagh as their scientific source, so why should anyone care about their opinion on anything?

Sometimes the UK gets cooler because of a wiggle in the Gulf Stream.

There are models you can check.

Because I personally happen to believe that our air polution is causing climate change, therefore in my view they are denying reality.

Also, polution is the cause of climate change and hence belongs on this thread.

I am continually amazed at the scientific ignorance of the anti-AGW characters who post on this forum. The whole point of the problem of climate change is not that the planet will get much warmer (no penguins with sun tans), but that the temperature changes will cause changes in long-established weather patterns. This means that in many cases (say 2 out of 5 times) you can actually get unseasonably cold weather in particular areas because the disruption of normal (pre-warming) weather patterns. Thus, the cold summer in England actually supports the reality of AGW.

A good measure of the validity of AGW is not the temperature in a particular region, but the aggregate of temperature changes all over the planet during the year compared to previous years. Another good measure of the validity of AGW is to look at how many extreme weather events outside of 'normal' patterns occurred worldwide compared to previous years. If the answers are that the aggregate temperature this year was slightly higher than in previous years and that more extreme weather events occurred this year then your evidence is good for AGW. Throw away the hockey stick and look at the data actually being collected, Don Glock (once you improve your scientific knowledge)!

Just to echo the sentiments of other posters, it is called "global warming", not "isolated area in Britain warming".

But let's apply your stringent scientific standards for what is the confidence interval for blanket statements, shall we?

Good post. As I understand it, however, right-wing Americans have decided that everything is a matter of opinion, and as long as you can convince a majority in Hicksville that the world is flat, flat it is, and any other theory is a wicked liberal conspiracy. One day they will vote to abolish death and live forever!

You argument is pure bunk. The reason its went from global cooling in the 70's to global warming in the 90's to climate change in the 00's is because the science is not good enough to predict weather changes due to pollution. The only thing the scientists are smart enough to figure out is to call it climate change, it just took them 30 years since all the other names they had did the opposite of their predictions. One can't really argue with climate change because the weather is constantly changing and the so called scientist can continue to milk gullible people like the warmist and many governments to justify their existence and to pad their wallets with grant money. For the warmist that fear pollution will kill the planet, the earth was here before man and it will still be here when we are all dead and buried.

Did you young warmist ever ask you grand parents if they painted their roofs black from the coming ice age that these same scientist had predicted was coming in the 70's?
