Perhaps the trend of public shcool failure will trend parents to have their kids attend online schools as well as private schools. When you look at the cost of public schools it is astonomical and there need to be a balance of cost between public school education and private school education.

However, when I see the result of the private school student and the public school student, I cringe to think of the hundreds of billions waisted just to employ adults who capitlize on opportunitiy to make money off the taxpayer and provide nothing towards the education of students. Sure we can say it makes for analysis, and evaluation, and make the job easier for adults. But the bottom line is, the end product and the goal is not acheived. Hence the futureless ideology and direction of public education, and the failure of incompetent graduates who do not have the skills to provide leadership and innovation for the USA.

If I could choose my investment in education systems, I would allways bet on the private school, as they have better history of outcomes.
However, I do invest in public school debt, because they have more union power over politicians and taxpayers, and I can make a decent profit off their intrest debt alone.

I know its sad to invest in someones failures for profit, but I do not see private schools in debt.
It's like short selling stocks, but in this case there is no bottom, and the trend will always be stong as long as schools continu to demand more money from States that have no money in their budgets.

Of course they can categorize and document spending, at least in my state of Florida they do. About 30% of our state government spending is on education. Do you actually believe this crap about them not being able to document spending?

The data about private schools came from an association of private schools. This association includes most major groups of private schools in the nation.

Public schools in the U.S. date from colonial times. They began in Massachussetts in 1647.

Well, it was so the colony of Massachussetts could guarantee that people could read the Bible.

The text of the first law mandating public education in schools:

I don't know of a state that requires Master's degrees for elementary (or secondary) teaching. I don't doubt that there are states that require it, but in the Southeast, it's certainly not a requirement. That's the problem with most education arguments--people assume that rules are uniform throughout the U.S. Education, for the most part, is state controlled, not federally controlled. (the problem is the feds have their fingers in it, and complicate things).

Most teachers in private schools do so because they are true believers in their religion or they are not competent enough for public schools. My wife taught for 4 yrs in Catholic schools because she truly believed in the concept. She still feels guilty sometimes for teaching in public schools.

Not all private school teachers belive in the religious aspect of education. Basic public school education is just that basic teaching. Most people will never see their true learning potential untill they reach full cognitive development and for most of the current USA population, that seems to be around 22-26 years old. I know that States spend more than 65% of their revenue on public schole education, and that they are in massive debt because of it. And the only ones who benifit are those investment firms that loaned money to the school districts. The only way to save the USA is to eliminate the DOE, but keep regulations to monitor education effectiveness alive. Because we the people want to know just how much farther the USA is going to continue to fail in education.

Just the great majority of them.

According to capenet.org, only about 13% of private schools are nonsectarian. That means 87% are.

Please show where you get that bogus 65% figure. The State of Florida spends less than 30% of it's taxes on education.

The problems with privatizing the education system are many. First of all businesses aren't necessarily required to teach facts unless they are regulated and instructed by the government to do so. Take a look at any major incorporated industry; they all duck around poorly designed regulations so that they can maximize profits. Not deliver quality products. We all complain about how McDonalds sells the most unhealthy food in the developed world, you would think they would make healthy food out of responsibility but they don't. The same thing will happen to our schools. Judging by the pro-privatization arguments here people are just generally anti-government though and simply cannot see why some things are better left to the state.

Yes, the governments of the world are doing very horrible jobs, but we should fix the problems and stick to something we know works rather than abandon it for something which will likely become even more corrupt than it already is.

Wasn't it the public, government funded, education system that helped make America one of the most educated nations on Earth before? I'm Canadian and even I knew that. Don't think that just because money is being spent poorly by the government means that we should just simply do away with government funding and bring in total privatization. Rather we should make our government grow up and do it's job.

Unfortunately objectivism is becoming quite popular these days...

The reason for this thread was not to bash public education. I agree that public education is a requirement of government. I just think that we would be better off if the federal government stayed out of the education arena. It simply is better done at a lower level.

Who ensures that the government teaches facts? That's right, the government. The primary purpose of government education is to teach children to be good government citizens and therefore it is going to teach to children the facts that government bureaucrats believe will best paint government in a good light.

So you insist that people can't make responsible decisions and choose, say, non-profit education institutions that best fit their values. Instead, they should be forced conform to your values, which appear to be lack of responsibility for making good decisions and hatred of business.

I don't complain about McDonald's because I generally don't eat there, just as I don't trust the state to tell me what is or is not healthy food. Is it their responsibility or is it yours to decide to eat healthy food? I guess if someone believes that it's not their responsibility to eat healthy food, we really can't expect that person to believe it's his or her responsibility to do anything else, including seeking education or even thinking for himself. Let the government take care of it!

Tell us, all knowing one, why it should be "better left" to the state. Are you aware of the history of government schools, or do you assume that it was all about helping the poor and making up for a lack of literacy and other academics? I'm still waiting for one of you pro-government school folks to provide some evidence that it was the latter. I would think that after 12 years of good government education that such evidence would be a breeze to research and provide. But, I guess, it's just easier to attack people and make assertions that you will never have to actually defend.

It is fact for some states like CA and HI they had the State auditor attempt to account, and they could not do it, and it was open for criminal investigation. Still no documents or entity has attempted to audit or find accountability for their school districts. And it's been over 10 years.
