I retired last year and my wife, and I are very busy touring the wonderful national parks that reflect our nation's beauty, pride and history.

Massachusetts has many national historical sites such as the USS Constitution in Boston. She last sailed under her own power in August, 2012, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her victory over the HMS Guerriere, 38-gun frigate of the British Navy.

The most exciting trips we have made so far are the sites where the first and second battles of Bull Run were fought (Manassas National Battlefield Park) and the Valley Forge National Historic Park in Pennsylvania.

Valley Forge was the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army. This is the site that brings to mind the famous painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware River during the winter of 1776. This painting describes the historic moment when General George Washington led the American revolutionary troops across the Delaware River in order to surprise the English and Hessian troops in the Battle of Trenton the day after Christmas in 1776.

The national park in Valley Forge commemorates the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War generation who fought in the Continental Army. The park honors the ability of our ordinary citizens to pull together and overcome great adversity during extraordinary times.
