I tried to give you another rep for your post in the Islamaphobe thread, but am over my daily limit. Beautifully said, and I couldn't agree with the sentiment more. Thank you :)

I share your wariness of nationalism. It's a big danger. What we need is to be bringing more people together not pushing them apart. A couple of weeks ago as my friends were leaving Killarney's pub, around the corner from me, a couple of 5th generation Irish Americans noted my friend's Yorkshire accent and decided to yell "____ The Queen!" Now what was that all about? What dialogue does that serve? It's just silliness and if they had approached him and taken time to politely ask what he thought about "the troubles" they'd have found him to be entirely sympathetic to Ireland but that's the kind of narrow tunnel vision nationalism can bring you. I suspect that none of them had even been to Ireland either much less aware of the Trotskyist leanings of the IRA. Go figure. Yes, another Reds fan! We should form a club!

      Cheers,

Heroclitus, cheers man! I've enjoyed your well written and keenly informed posts on Scottish and English history! I don't know that it's possible to debate and convince someone whose intent is to identify a clear hero and villain in complex events of hundreds of years ago but you've made a good effort at it!

For questions like that, it is best to ask an aussie poster called Makedde. Though if you just want to give some one rep, you need to click on the scale that is above every post, right next to where it says permalink.

Oh and as far as what you said, I agree with you completely. Anyone who is a soviet apologist loses credibility in my eyes. And I think that to many american leftists tend to look at things in a far too simplistic way(as do american conservatives, in fact americans in general). We support causes we don't really understand. We fight a war on terrorism, attempting to bunch groups together who are not similar in most ways. Officially, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the taliban are all terrorist groups we need to fight in the war on terror. But we too often forget that they are 3 radically different groups with radically different agendas. It is a bit similar to our view in the cold war, where we considered every problem in the scope of the cold war. Often forgetting many problems lie outside the realm of cold war politics.

Ok, it was good talking to you. I hope to see you stick around here. I am getting offline.

Ya, by european standards I would be left to moderate left, but by american standards I am pretty far left. But I am not a Democrat. I would describe myself as a social democrat. So I also very much support markets, I just see that there are some flaws and detrimental aspects of a free market system that need to be dealt with. I think government needs do that job. Offering welfare, unemployment, workers compensation, etc.

I am a history major, and I have done a good deal of focus on the soviet union, and I have seen the destructive nature of highly centralized planned economies, and I do not support such a system at all. So as I said, by european standards, I would probably be moderate, but by american standards anyone who questions the infallibility of the market. And casts doubt on the ability of the free market to provide everything needed in a functioning modern society, is labeled a radical leftist!!

It is good to have a fellow red around!! There are a few other liverpool supporters here as well. Are you from liverpool yourself? I don't know if we will joust or not. If you are a conservative we probably will. If you are on the left like I am, we will mostly be agreeing.

PS. I get my degree at the end of the school year, and it is my goal to go see a match at Anfield!!

I think the term "classical liberal" is also equally applicable. I don't really care very much what I'm called. I'm much more interested in having people thinking about the ideas, rather than the person. Milton Friedman
