First off, I am American.
Second, I have no answer. I suppose it all started from Video games, namely "Red Alert 2"
It's an alternate history game about what if Hitler never lead Germany to conquer Europe, but it was the Soviets? The whole thing goes into a Soviet takeover of the US. That sparked an interest in the Soviets, then the Cold War. This lead to WWII, then WWI. Soon it wasn't the war that fascinated me, but the politics behind it.
