I do like purple, but I bleed maroon. I met and married my husband there. My son graduated SUMMA cum laude (the TOP student in the College of Science). My daughter will graduate with honors this year. Be careful! Bragging is like breathing to me!

I wish I could answer why any of that matters. We can all live in peace and get along if we just look at the person and the inner goodness that is there. Many just seem to look at the differences and want to fist fight.

I missed you. I hadn't seen many posts for a while. I was out of action for a time for health issues.

I hope you are well and thank you for the rep.

Oh, I have no idea why I even put that up there. I've had no time to do that in almost a year. But I would say wrestling. But my sole combat this year has been overextending my knee while trying to kickbox.

Hey southpaw he will be rememdered in history; in my opinion and I would think many many others, the worst president in our nations history. People are tired of the lies & catasrophic decisions from the bush administation, from his foriegn policy, his inability to unite the country(did he not say during his 1st run at the presidency, he would unite us all!!!!), his out of control spending. i could go on and on, only 70 some days left and the majority of the country will finally be releaved bush and all of you who think he was great will no longer have the power to "BS" this nation and the rest of the world! God bless the United States of America and have a beautiful day

Again, mentioning, "I didn't know you were 16. A lot more makes sense now." is an indication of intent, so I was requesting that you not engage in ad hominem attacks in the future, regardless of whether or not you previously had.
    11. Agnapostate
      Agnapostate
Post this on my profile, not yours. But if you mention this repeatedly, that would be an indication of an unwarranted personal attack.

Conversations and debates don't work that way. As people share ideas and discuss them, there is the constant need and desire to know more about the person putting forth the information. I understand where you are coming from to an extent and even agree to a smaller extent. However, I disagree with the basic presupposition that it is more useful to ignore any information about the poster than it is to take such facts into use as contextual evidence.

The first thing I told you was that my personal characteristics were not relevant to the validity of my claims. You then insisted that they were with such an intense fervor that I felt compelled to inform you that if you were angling towards an unnecessary attack, it would be both unwarranted and unwelcome. It was merely an advisory that warrants no further argumentation.

I was addressing this remark: "Don't get all hissy at me just because you are 16 and I now know it." I was informing you that your knowledge was not a problem for me, but that I suspected you would use it to initiate ad hominem attacks.

I couldn't care less what think you know or don't know. If I had something to hide, I would have hidden it once "Thinker" started snooping around. Stating "I didn't know you were 16. A lot more makes sense now," indicates that you might engage in the sort of aforementioned "dismissal."

Yes we would. Yet in the worst of times we would be support and friends. That is the best type of friend. One that tells you the opposite side and from that we grow. Listening only to what we agree with is like hearing running water it soothes and puts us to sleep. That would never happen with us.
    17. Inferno
      Inferno
We may not always agree but you are a good person. A very good one. I could be a friend in the real as well as on line I am certain.

I am telling you that my personal characteristics have no bearing whatsoever on the validity of the points I make. You ought to attack those points independently if you feel that they lack merit. When one poster heard of my advocacy of utilitarian ethics, he snobbishly remarked, "I'll bet this is some first-year college student all excited about reading Peter Singer for the first time."

He was correct that I am a first-year college student, but he was incorrect that I was reading about utilitarian ethics for the first time. I had immersed myself in such work long before he had, and making judgments based on age has no bearing whatsoever on the validity of a person's claims.

According to Wikipedia, "An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the man", "argument against the man") consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject."

You deny that this is what you are doing? There is no contextual issue involved in our debates regarding youth. I do not support youth rights merely because I am one. I am neither black, female nor gay, for instance, but I support equal rights for those groups. One of the most prominent and intelligent supporters of youth rights is a psychologist and grandfather who will be turning 82 in November.

If there was one thing I would ask of you, it would be that you consider the arguments of your fellow posters rather than their personal characteristics. Address each post as though it came from an anonymous source, so that you may focus on the content of the post rather than the nature of the poster. Ad hominem attacks are unwarranted and unnecessary.
    21. Agnapostate
      Agnapostate
Not relevant, unless this is your idea of an ad hominem attack. Address the post, not the poster.
