"Better technology yields better data. The bad news is the extra water from 2003-2010 would fill Lake Erie eight times

Nearly 230 billion tons of ice is melting into the ocean from glaciers, ice caps, and mountaintops annually—which is actually less than previous estimates, according to new research by scientists at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

If the amount of ice lost between 2003 and 2010 covered the United States, the whole country would be under one-and-a-half feet of water, or it'd fill Lake Erie eight times, researchers say. Ocean levels worldwide are rising about six hundredths of an inch per year, according to researcher John Wahr.

While vast quantities of ice melting into the ocean is not exactly good news, Wahr says, according to his team's estimates, about 30 percent less ice is melting than previously thought.

The team used data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment satellite, which was launched as a joint project between NASA and Germany in 2002. The GRACE satellite measures gravity, which is related to mass, in 20 distinct regions worldwide. Wahr says that gives the team more accurate estimates, because previous teams had to measure ice loss at "a few easily accessible glaciers" and then extrapolate it to the 200,000 glaciers worldwide.

"It's tough to get an estimate [with previous methods]," he says.

With GRACE, the team can measure wide swaths of the earth, giving them a more complete picture. "It was time to do a complete global inventory," he says. Although the team used eight years of GRACE's data, Wahr says it's important to realize that melting patterns are hard to predict.

"Even with an eight-year estimate, it's not clear how far into the future you can project," he says. "A lot of people want to predict into the end of the century, but I think it's too dangerous to do that … We don't have enough info to know what'll happen. There's some ebb and flow to these things.""

NASA Satellite Data Helps Scientists Measure Earth's Melting Land Ice
February 10, 2012 - U.S. researchers say the first measurements of the Earth’s melting land ice using NASA satellite data shows the shrinking ice caps and glaciers led to a 12 millimeter increase in global sea levels from 2003 to 2010.

I think the operative word is MELTING.

Does it really make any difference how slow or fast they are melting?

Yep, with the feedback multiplier of the dark water, which absorbs heat, as opposed to the white ice and snow that reflect light, not to mention the cheap oil, Trump turning on the coal plants, and the Chinese adding 14,000 cars to the roads every day, it is probably too late. Our only hope now lies in geoengineering and in managing the crises proactively. But then what do I care? I'll be dead anyway and I don't have kids. I just hope there is no such a thing as reincarnation! It would suck to get born into the world at hand.

It reminds me of a marine biologist who was retiring after some 50 years of work. He said he was glad to be retiring because he didn't want to watch it all disappear.

I fear if both caps melt, that extra weight on the poles holding our inclination steady, when it goes away the earth my go to zero inclination. And you know what that means!!! No tilt.

I once read a scientist say that our ice age would not be over until both poles have melted..so that is in our future, right? If we get there just a tiny bit faster, as Hillary said, "what is the difference!!"

I will believe our leaders and other groups will be taken seriously when they together call for and get AGW worldwide land management adding billions of tons of co2 extracting flora, as a moratorium is placed on deforestation, world wide. Until then, they are either not serious, charlatans, or irresponsible.

Why is it that the left wing environmentalists, and gov't are not concerned at all about reducing co2 by what I laid out above? Why are they only concerned with wind, solar, and carbon taxes? So, either they are not serious, charlatans, or irresponsible!!!

Must not be as much money to be made by our elites by land management, and a deforestation moratorium? Probably a pittance?

Um, no, total fantasy. Also, the South Pole is a continent. - Antarctica. And ice is less dense than water.

plenty of ice down south at the south pole..last survey done showed it was over 9000 feet thick..but the they still say it is disappearing..yeah right...

Survey vs uniformed opinion. How long did you think about this, half a second? Spent a lot of time at the South Pole have you?

The arrogance of ignorance is staggering.

LOL. So, the earth isn't flat either? Come on man, there is no land under south pole ice. It's holler under that ice, UFO bases. The earth may not be flat, but it is hollow. Lizard men live there.

Sounds familiar. The south pole continent is very mysterious. I have heard all kinds of tales about it. It yields a huge canvas for the imagination.

Perhaps one day all of its ice will melt and we will have some new land to settle. To get out of the boiling seas at the equator. Where all your seafood comes ready cooked. Take your plate down to the nearest sea side. Eat free.

LOL, that is funny and I like it but there is only one problem with that scenario. The temperature at the equator does not change much. For instance during the last glaciation it was only 3 C cooler.

do some researching online yourself and maybe you might learn something besides insulting people on a topic your know very little about..and we are not talking a bout sea ice packs but actual ice growth near the south pole..might take you atleast 10 minutes of your time to learn something..

and the studies were done by nasa by the way..

Oh, I thought one of these AGW boys were shooting me straight when they said equatorial ocean would boil like a teapot. Well, they do tend to exaggerate when they get the hysterics. It was an interesting idea though, freshly boiled seafood, like crab or lobsters, perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of sea salt, as fresh as you can get them. Throw a few ears of corn and potatoes, in the surf, and you got yourself decent meal. Not often you hear of any good coming from something a modern liberals says, and wish they were right on this one. Once again they inevitably let us down.

Global warming is probably not the nightmare scenario that has been painted. It may feature more positive aspects than we are being told. So there is a net gain for humanity and life itself. The flora are licking their little botanical lips over the prospect of a bit more co2 and temps. We may see wheat being grown much farther north on virgin land. Wine grapes in the UK, great grapes, as it once was.

Problem is it's not just Trump...it's tens of millions of Americans who are not interested in the science or the facts or the potential...as well as billions around the world who hold the same views.

Regarding China, don't forget the USA is about 5% of the world's population but we are responsible for nearly 25% of the carbon emissions. For the past 150 years, and continuing today, the USA has been industrialized which grew our economy and provided Americans with a lifestyle envied around the world...how can we deny China or others from doing exactly what we are doing in the USA?

We have lots of technology today, and this will expand tomorrow, but most Americans simply don't have the money to get involved, or don't personally understand and/or refuse the science, or simply are political sheep not caring about anything except their political party...
