Many religious people ignore the reality or forget that they are but "human" and lie to themselves.

Jesus was sinless; we aren't. Religion is a guide in this life, it doesn't CURE being human. Those who think otherwise tend to lead themselves into serious problems.

Woo Hoo! I am now a religious nutcase! How can you not back the religious right after this?

Well I think this one is now officially overplayed. I just saw this linked on the JREF forum. Those guys are tough over there! Santorum is like the cross to Dracula. Scott Sommers (who writes articles for Skeptic) did raise a few relevent points about the issue though.

Maybe Santorum would get better mileage about the problems with pornography, IF he had not injected it directly into politics.

I'm not saying that pornography isn't a problem for some individuals, or that the industry need not be regulated in some way(s)... but this thing that Santorum does, seems to place "religion" into the same spaces where only government should be. That is a BIG turn-off to Americans.

A government with a 'religious' flavor to it, is something that most Americans WILL spit out readily.

It is only a turnoff to the non religious and those quelled by the PC movement. Most Americans are religious, even if ambivalent and understand the threat to women that pornography represents as an avenue for the desperate except for the exceptional few that can actually cash in on it.

One problem with the thread title: How does anyone know if the actual porn users are Republicans or Democrats? The Red States that allegedly have the most porn users still had a significant subset of the voting population that voted for Democrats. Can we control for that variable?

For anyone thinking beyond their face... they realize that keeping government separate from religion protects their rights most effectively.

Also, you need to show that only the non-religious reject religion melding with government; I've virtually certain you are incorrect.

    Okay.

Where and what exactly is the "threat"? No law is going to STOP pornography production or use.

If people need mental help dealing with their sexuality, that is another thing altogether.

The Right WILL fail at pushing their religious views into government. Pornography may be a problem for some people, but banning it makes no sense whatsoever. It won't fix a thing.

Morals come from religious teaching. Even the founders knew this if you read anything they wrote, including Franklin. Without it, morals and ethics fall by the wayside as witnessed with liberal teaching during the current century.

No, not necessarily. You have been taught that (just as I was), but I've known many non-religious people (yes, even atheists) to have solid, life-affecting moral foundations.

That doesn't address this issue of banning pornography or merging religion with the POWER of government. The Founders advocated neither.

That proves nothing; still, I realize it is your 'belief'.

...or the democrats in the red states consume far more than democrats in blue states.

    Ha-Ha! :)

With today's technology, I'm certain that a statistical expert can extrapolate data such as that with reasonable accuracy.

Well with what information they said it just sounded like red states consume more porn than blue states. It does not mean that republicans necessarily consume more porn than democrats. There could have been more to the study but the two people did not talk about it.

Sorry, even atheists are affected by history. Man, left to himself, is much more brutal as history teaches. Man that only believes in himself can rationalize anything. Even with religion, man can rationalize much, but in the end, the teaching wins out. Without any guidance, there is no going back.

Of course, that doesn't mean YOUR idea of morality or religion is the only set of values people are living by. Come on, don't tell me you are that delusional.

And 'religion' is known to particularly mitigate the brutality of man? (I think you are mistaken.)

Well, people can and do take input from other human beings. And actual enlightenment is not limited to those who are 'religious'. In fact, many a case could be made against 'religion' and the 'religious' for narrowing people's thought processes significantly.

Of course YOU don't believe that; but it is true nevertheless.

No, it certainly does not always. If you can show me where 'religion' has not caused/induced its own problems, then I would believe that. But as a religious person, I witnessed AND fallen for the pitfalls that come with it. You try to paint religion as NOT being problematic in the hands of mankind... but you would be absolutely incorrect.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have met many unbelievers, whose morality and humanity were significantly superior to that of many I knew who were "Christian" or "religious". I believe people CAN get good things from the Bible or other religion... but they do not always do that. There is more than enough evidence in this world to show that I have a verifiable case for what I'm saying here.

Some of the so-called Christian guidance (and that of other "religions") that's out here... is NOTHING we want integrated with the POWER of government. Leave it in the churches and religious schools.

Pornography is a problem for some people; let them seek treatment then. Porn is likely NOT the root problem for a person affected by the same.

    You may have a point.

I'd have to do more research to argue with you more on that.

All I know is that some guy having a problem (like becoming violent) as a result of pornography, isn't everyone's problem. Placing a ban on porn isn't going to 'solve' the problems with a person like that... anymore than a marriage fixes everyone with an elevated libido.

There is a reason for organized religion. If you do not understand the idea of man thinking of a higher power than oneself, then you will never understand what religion actually protects.

Tell me where the book of atheism is and I will show you a new religion.

    Agnostics are just chicken(*)(*)(*)(*) believers.

Well, this is an argument about 'beliefs'. We can argue that in perpetuity.

What I KNOW is that there are very 'moral' people who ascribe to NO RELIGIOUS VALUES. While you may not ever buy the notion of values with no "god" to back them, you would be wrong to think that there are not people as moral as yourself who do not agree with you AT ALL concerning your religious beliefs.

The Founding Fathers were astute enough (even diverse enough in their thinking) to address reasonable compromises related to "religion" and the power of "government". Now, there are debates over that separation which go on to this day... even so, it is apparent that no set/group of Americans would peacefully allow another to define or abridge their rights and liberties via laws based SOLELY upon one group's religious beliefs. For example, what would "Christians" say or protest about, once it was Islam's or Buddhism's turn to IMPOSE some religious moral, law/belief using the power of government? It is simply an untenable notion, in a nation as diverse as this one happens to be.

What kind of wars would break out if we were to IMPOSE religion via government power? Likely the worst we've ever known.

If pornography can indeed be (scientifically) shown to be as serious a problem as people like Rick Santorum or Pat Robertson might suggest... then personally I say we should apply certain control measures to mitigate some of its effects. But certainly, I don't want to see some LAW imposed upon all, based upon what YOU or some other religious person claims as a belief. I would literally revolt against that notion. I'd spend my LIFE fighting that... legally and politically.

We can respect ANY individual's desire to adhere to a set of religious beliefs... but to coerce others via the power and intimidation of government (i.e. banning the viewing of pornography), is not acceptable; and it will not stop the practice at all.

An interesting study, but seems a little bogus to me.

Alaska, especially... I mean, the male to female ratio is 10 to 1, and it's not like there's an adult superstore around every corner. It's freaking alaska, they're lucky to have paved roads.

Of COURSE there's going to be a higher consumption of porn on the internet there. And while alaska is an extreme example, I suspect similar situations exist in many red states where most of the population doesn't live in big cities.

The internet happens to be an easy way to get access to porn "under ground", without having your neighbor or post man see it. So people in red states are likely driven to get porn from the internet because A: They have no better options, and B: they can get the porn secretly without having their bible-belt neighbors see them.

That all said, I suppose it still does show that people will be people, even under the "positive influence" of the bible belt culture.
