Now, the idea of giving gays the same married rights as straight couples has been called both equal rights and special rights... Both sides are right in their own way. Compared to straight couples, it is equal right, but when compared to the treatment that other types of relationships get, it can be called special rights. I mean, what about polygamists......what about incestious couples (who are consenting adults)... If it is going to be equal rights, it must be given to everyone....not just gays.... Polygamy, incest, and pretty much any other marriage (as long as they involve only consenting adults), will have to be allowed. The best thing to do is to bar the government from promoting or demoting any form of marriage between consenting adults. The government's only involvement in marriage should be the setting of tax rates for couples/groups, who wish to file jointly, and setting the age of consent. Government would still act as mediator during divorces, but that is only if the parties want it. There are also private sector mediators for divorces, that don't involve the government.
What do you mean by promoting or demoting? Are you saying the government should be indifferent to who is getting a legal marriage?
Marrige should not be legal or illegal, as long as all involved are legal adults and consent to the contract.....Period........The government should not determine whether consenting adults are allowed to marry.
So, effectively that means the government will be indifferent to who you're entering into a legal marriage with, or whatever word you want to use to describe the arrangement. Two men, two women, one man, one woman, three men, five women, 9 old men and 3 young women, and so on and so forth.
If it where special rights, then we would see it being cheaper. It's not special rights, it's just an expansion of the exsisting rights.
The only limit would be the amount of taxes that a polygamist marriage can get off on taxes when filing jointly, and of course, each state would dictate the age of consent at which a person can legally marry. My state's AoC is 16. This would also mean that Mormon sister-wives, or whatever they are called, would be legal wives, and no longer allowed to take welfare as single mothers if they have kids.
As controversial as this might sound, as long as we're talking about the relationship, I actually support both. With polygamy, more responsibility is required, but that to me is not enough of a reason to criminalise it. As for incest, the issue is breeding. In-breeding results in a greater likelihood of genetically-based diseases but if you take that out of the picture, it's no different to any other relationship. You just adopt instead of breed. I have a blog post talking about this in more detail but that's the crux of it. I'd be interested to hear what others think of this.
yes it is.....if you demand them, but refuse them to others.....I know many gays that demand "equal rights" but then turn around and call polygamists evil.......they are hipocrits.....
I really can't see how people can even say those are the same things. It's like you're deliberately not seeing the truth. Same-sex marriage is just the other side of opposite-sex marriage. It's the same contract, the same rules, the same everything except for the gender of those involved. Special rights and equal rights are not the same thing. Special rights would be if we let some gay couples get married, but not others. Or if we limited it to certain races, or certain income levels. That's not the way it works.
No....special rights is letting some people marry who they want and not letting EVEY other person do the same. A great example of this would be incest. There are adults incestrious couples that want to be together, but it is illegal because other people do not like the idea. It's no different than gay marriage. They should be allowed to do what they want, as long as everyone involved are consenting adults. There are people, even in the gay community, that do not think this is the case, and want incest to stay illegal, no matter if those involved are consenting adults or not.....If a gay person says they should be allowed to marry who they want, but want to refuse that right to others, then it is specia; rights.
This is such a faulty argument. It's not about "marrying whoever you want". It's about entering into a marriage contract, exactly like the kind that two people, one man and one woman, are currently allowed to do. The contract remains the same, the amount of consenting adults in the contract remains the same. It is illegal for a man and a woman to enter into an incestuous relationship, and it would be illegal for two people of the same sex to do the same. Once same-sex marriage is legalized, everyone will have the same rights.
