I grew up in Detroit, east Detroit specifically. I have lots of theories on how, why, and I don't think its as simple as "they gave people welfare". Yes, the culture of welfare is a large contributor but by no means the only factor.

I see that no one has interest in understanding it, or really trying to help people so I'm not going to bother beyond saying that there are multiple factors.

 

Detroit would make an awesome location for several post apocalyptic movies, i mean the opportunities are endless. From abandoned factories to wild wasteland. I'm writting myself a script and move with a camera crew to Detroit.

Detroit was once the hub of the American car manufacturing industry. As the Japanese, and to a certain extent, the European car manufacturing industry took off, American cars lost their market share. The industry crawled to a halt in Detroit, therefore shutting plants down and laying workers off.

It is worse than that. Detroit is where it is due to white flight. The suburbs surrounding Detroit are quite nice. We have place like Detroit here in Indiana. It is called Gary and is the states 3d or 4th largest city. Same thing. Same cause. Same result.

 

1. National economic depression caused by multiple factors led to the decline of big ticket sales
2. The economy of the city of Detroit was revolved around automobiles (mostly) and Motown Records (music + tourism), when the price of cars versus quality could not match what people had come to expect of the Japanese, US autos lost value, plants began to close, the city's economy went into the toilet and their were massive layoffs
3. Massive layoffs in a city where the jobs revolved around 1 major industry made it impossible to find another job that would pay what they were making on the lines, so they either gave up their homes and possessions or went on assistance
4. Temporary assistance turned to long term as the 80's stall lingered
5. Blue collar Christian and Catholic men started to become depressed because they were "Old School" and couldn't take care of their families, men turned to drink
6. Casinos were a bridge away
7. Rise of ghetto "culture"
8. Institutionalized depression and ghetto mentality
9. Good people became trapped, apathetic people could not find the hope needed to leave the (*)(*)(*)(*) city for greener pastures
10. Without funds the schools became war zones, the kids got horrific educations, the city divides into Catholic school versus public schools and then poor blacks and whites who once worked together on the plants start turning on each other (except for Eminem)
11. The city, once divided between rich and blue collar, becomes rich and desperately angry poor
12. Good people with relatives who have some money or live elsewhere attempt to flee
13. Good people who can't flee are surrounded by not so good people
14. Detroit decays further, more depression, anger, and now illiterate education
15. "South of 8 Mile" becomes a badge of honor...East Detroit is a war zone
16. The lower middle income suburbs like Harper Woods, Warren, and East Pointe become ghetto-fied
17. Houses on lakeshore can be bought for less than $300k

Please. He and Congress got us out of the recession. But total recovery wasn't going to happen in four years, especially the partisan, childish idiocy in Congress. Most economists are predicting unemployment won't get down below 6% until 2016 or later.

Except that.....the recession was bad enough as to take up to 10 years to fully recover. Overall, the economy has gotten a bit better since Obama has been in office, at least in terms of jobs. So quit your whining. If anything, the obstructionist ways of the GOP are stifling growth.

Detroit is the tip of the iceberg. Flint, MI, Camden, NJ, East Saint Louis, IL, Chester, PA, Newark, NJ, Compton, CA, Gary, IN, Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, wastelands, and this is just beginning to show the flaws. Discriminating against the taxpayer to support the criminal or lazy is a pathway towards destruction.

 

There is only one solution for impoverished blacks in America. It isn't free stuff. It isn"t opportunity and it's not affirmative action. There is one solution and two choices. They can leave the U.S.A. or they can work hard in the blue collar segment. We can not and will not keep propping them up.
