Amidst the rampant speculation and unfortunate attempts to exploit the Aurora tragedy for political gain, I thought it would be appropriate to start a thread discussing what we actually know about the suspect, James Holmes. Hat tip to JP5:

Colorado Mass Shooting Suspect Described As 'Recluse'
    by EYDER PERALTA

Authorities have identified 24-year-old James Holmes as the suspect in the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

According to witnesses, the gunman showed up at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises and opened fire. Quoting a federal law enforcement official, the AP reports the gunman had an assault rifle, a shotgun and two pistols."

There are still many questions surrounding the shooting and the alleged shooter. But we're beginning to fill in a sketch of Holmes.

Here's what we know so far:

    — The Denver Post has perhaps the best profile of Holmes. It reports that in an apartment rental application last year, Holmes said he was a student who was "quiet and easy going." Other tenants told the paper that Holmes was a "recluse."

    — The Associated Press reports that Holmes dropped out of the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver last month.

Spokeswoman Jaque Montgomery said "she did not know when he started school or why he withdrew."

    — The Post says the building in which Holmes lived was reserved for medical students. The paper adds:

"A pharmacy student who also lives in the building told The Post he called 911 around 12:30 a.m. because there was a song blaring from the stereo inside apartment 10, where Holmes lived. The student, who wanted to be identified only as Ben, said he couldn't make out the song but that it seemed to be the same one playing on repeat.

"He also said Holmes kept to himself and wouldn't acknowledge people when they passed in the hall and said hello.

"'No one knew him. No one,' Ben said."

    — After a first look at public records, NPR's Margot Williams reports that there doesn't appear to be any prior cases against Holmes.

    — CBS News, quoting a federal official, says that Holmes "appears to have been "under the radar."

I must admit, this guy fits the typical profile of the mass murderers we've seen lately - a reclusive, sociopathic head-case who went over the edge...

Also, he's from San Diego ... the police had to quadrant-off his parents home in San Diego this morning from reporters and looky-loos and where a policewoman Lt. had held a news conference ...

... when his mom first learned that her son was the suspect she said ... *He did it*

I have to agree with you.

It is sad the MSM tried to politicize their horrible incident the way they did as soon as it happened.

    Wise conclusions by Brewskier ...

The left was practically already breaking out the champagne in celebration, thinking the shooter was a Tea Party conservative. Now they have to backtrack and hide the fact that this might be an OWS left-wing nutjob.

    This is poetry.

As speculation mounts about the motive behind the mass shooting, one private investigator has said that Holmes may have been part of Occupy Wall Street's most violent faction, Occupy Black Bloc. Bill Warner told how the Batman movie portrays the OWS crowd in a negative vein, leading him to believe that may have been a cause behind the gunman's rage.

So playing one song on repeat is a sign of being mass murderer?

    Wow.

Some people have an abysmal standard of evidence.

You don't agree with him or you wouldn't have followed up with this:

You guys actually sound happy about all of this. Do you realize that?

    Sheesh...

The Brady Campaign is already capitalizing on the deaths of innocent people.

    Simply disgusting.

I'd like to know why she said that. It sounds like she knows that he has been having psychological issues...

That's one of the greatest mysteries about this situation. I can remember when I first heard the reports of the shooting one of the first questions was if anyone saw this guy going off the rails, and if so, why didn't they say or do something?

In all fairness, hindsight being 20/20, that's an all too easy question to ask...

I wonder why she was so confident he did it and why she did not report his strange behavior to the police?

Bad timing for something like this, with the U.N. gun treaty.

I remenber where the parents of Jared L. Loughner tried to get him some medical help from the state before he snapped, but the government let them down.

I have a feeling the same situation will again be true in this latest shooting incident.

Suspect in Shooting of Giffords Ruled Unfit for Trial

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Jared L. Loughner was not mentally competent to stand trial on charges that he opened fire at a constituent event for Representative Gabrielle Giffords in January, killing six and injuring her and 12 others.

Let this be a lesson to the misguided people on the Left who want to consolidate government power and give it even more control and infuence over our lives!

I know that Regal Cinemas bans licensed concealed carry in their theaters. Was this one of them? In other words, was this another case (remember Virginia Tech) where irrational anti-gun policies prevented the good guys from stopping the bad guys? Remember - when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

    On another vein:
If Obama were armed in the theater, do you think he would've taken on the bad guy or been the 1st one out the door?

    Obama in 2012? Seriously?

It's sad we're all jumping to paint this guy as an OWS crazy or a Tea Party crazy. Chances are he was just crazy, not everything has to be political y'know.

    So do I, Wolverine.

The people on the Left are fooling themselves if they actually think gun control legislation would have prevented this incident!

It is foolish to believe when guns are outlawed the criminals and psychos in our society will not be able to get their hands on guns. The only people without guns will be law abiding citizens who desperately need them for protection.

All this foolish policy will do is create a black market in guns and ammunition that will be sold surreptitiously in back alleys and off the street.

They have very strict gun laws in Chicago and Washington DC and these cities have to highest murder rates in the world. You can purchase an AK47 that can easily spray a theatre or concert with 50 rounds in these cities anytime you want one!

As with illegal drugs, there is very little the police can do about it. If this fellow had received the professional help he obviously needed, this event would never have happened. The people in the state mental health department really dropped the ball on this one!
