CA makes 2X what Virginia does...and "average" is a term that can be squewed easily...does that mean with 3 years or 10 years or 20 years service plus what "rate" or grade makes a difference. Bottom line is that teachers don't earn what their counterprts do like nurses with the same education...it's just wrong. It's the first thing any politician says they will fix and the one item they never touch.

Ahh mine teaches special needs and right now is a head teacher in a school for autistic kids. Loves her job and she would kill for the benefit package and salary those overweight teachers in Chicago think isnt good enough.

Strikes can only take place in a state where Unions are legal. I live in a Right To Work State; strikes are illegal here.

Just cause they claim to work to help kids, doesnt mean they work to help kids....

Clearly, this strike is all about them and their desire for Free Stuff.

If they really did as they claim, their asses would be in the classroom teaching kids.

Theyre liars, just like their Left Handed Messiah...

They were offered 16% over 4 years and demanded more than 30%. It is simply a hour more a day and YES they need to be judged on the children they educate. Gee I'd love to have a job where I wasn't evaluated on the job I was suppose to be doing.

But there is an underlying problem to all this.

    And that problem is this:

You got teachers at schools that, the school itself is not in a bad part of town, has kids in it that are bused in from bad parts of town. Those kids are the type of kids that raise themselves and have no parents at home. How do you teach that type of kid who is so preoccupied with surviving the day????? These teachers are being graded on teaching kids with no real interest in school.

That is an impossible task. And it is a real problem.

Now teachers begging for more money, I am with ya all the way. But this merit based on testing, I don't see how that works out. Simply due to the fact you got a large group of kids out there that just don't give a crap about themselves or their own education and we are expecting these teachers to somehow save them.

    That is impossible.

It's time, in my opinion, to go back to letting students fail grades. It's the only way to get the parents sitting on the fence to get off their asses and pay attention to their kids. There is no helping the other group of kids and parents, which is termed: the clueless.

Meh. Public schools are a complete failure anyway.

We should reform our education system to include options like neighborhood schools, charter schools, private schools, home schooling. Especially neighborhood schools, those are the way to go for sure. Smaller class rooms, funded locally by the neighborhood, easier to get to and from school and easier to talk with the teacher, good student/teacher one on one time and easier to build a relationship with the educators.

The timing here is highly suspect, what's with less than 2 months away from elections. The public union (from Chicago, no less) striking at this time makes Obama look bad, and it makes no sense. Unless...

Watch Obama doing another beer summit, negotiating with both the union and Chicago, and coming out of it like a hero. Any bets against me? :)

They are striking from high pay jobs, when everyone else is looking for work

The reason why they are protecting inferior teachers in their ranks, is because most of them are not far off from that, and they see it as an opening to go after their luxurious jobs next.

It's "wrong"? According to who? Certainly not the market. Teachers in the public sector are insulated from competition by the government. If they weren't, half of them would be sweeping floors somewhere...

79% of 8th graders in Chicago schools DO NOT read proficiently.

I would be firing left and right.

$70K+ a year on average with great benefits... holy crap this is theft.

You may be on to something.

What if Obama came in and "went against" the unions and they caved? This is all so suspect.

If the students are as hopeless as you and the liberal public teachers say they are then that's all the more reason not to pay the public teachers more money.

We could find babysitters without teaching degrees to sit in the classrooms for $30K a year or less.

But I think the public teachers are full of crap who are only using the students as an excuse for their own incompetence.

Lets put our money into vouchers instead and let competition decide who the best teachers are.

It is the teachers JOB to get them interested and keep them interested and to educate them NOT make excuses.

Then let's quit trying and wasting the money on education.
Yes, what do you think we pay them to do? It's what my teachers did, THEY made me interested in school, THEY made me interested in the subjects, THEY taught me. They didn't make excuses.

I was VERY interested in my kids education and went to PTA meetings and went to parent teacher conferences and called teachers and you know what, I still had to send them to private tutors and Sylvan Learning centers to teach them how to read and do math.

She cant strike so its not a "cop-out". If she doesnt go to work she gets fired. Its really that simple.
