http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2012/10/politics/big-donors/index.html?hpt=hp_c1 Definitely looks like the "Dark Money" spenders, led by Carl Roves Crossroads GPS were much much bigger spenders on the Republican side. The democrats had more bundlers. But the GOP seemed to lead the big money from single sources lists. I don't believe this is not what the founding fathers would have wanted elections to be about.
They did not lose. Those very wealthy individuals don't care who is in office, they just want to push the "right" further towards an even more free-market economy. Which is what will happen with Obama in office. Just like the last four years, the "right" will play off of the make believe socialist in office to get their neo-liberal policies passed on a state level. Those very wealthy individuals want less regulation and more privatization. That is why they write those big checks.
The framers of the Constitution would probably have laughed their heads off at the amount of money being spent that doesn't change a single thing. They'd be like, "well its your money, burn it if you want." Obviously the republicans far outspent the democrats and what did it give them? Not a lot. So much for Super-pacs impacting the elections in negative ways.
As I mentioned above, the people who fund super-pacs don't care who is in the oval office. The corporations run the country whether it is an elephant or a donkey. What superpacs do is shift public opinion that allows for less regulation and more privatization. And it works.
