I just wanted to ask the teckys on this site a little question I have.
My wife wants me to buy her an I Pad. I've been hearing about this new one call Samsung. I didn't know there were more than one I Pad. But they are saying the two are the same.
The Samsung one is a lot cheaper than the I Pad one. Would there be any reason to buy the expensive one. If they do the same thing I would opt for the cheep one. Thanks.

The iPad is made by Apple and runs iOS. The Samsung one is called the Galaxy Tab and runs Android. The latest iPad is more powerful than the latest Galaxy Tab. The iPad is also much better for people who are less tech savvy because Apple is in complete control of their app market, so apps that will screw up your tablet are much less likely to even be available for the product, let alone accidentally installed by the average user. The benefits to the Galaxy Tab are price (as you've noted) and the flexibility of the Android OS. Also, most apps for Android are cheaper or free compared to iPad apps because Android users don't buy nearly as many of them. However, that also means popular apps are far more likely to come to iPad first, and possibly never arrive on Android.

Generally, if you don't know what Android is, and you don't want a more varied and secure app market, then the iPad is the way to go. If you love Android and hate Apple, then go with the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

It should be noted that the iPad 2, which is comparable in power to the Galaxy Tab 2, is probably the same price as the Tab, if not cheaper. So make sure you compare oranges to oranges if you base your decision on price.

In a filing earlier today, picked up by Bloomberg, Apple said it wants to extend an earlier injunction on Samsung's Wi-Fi-only 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet to encompass the cellular version as well. Apple cites the jury verdict from last week, which found the Wi-Fi version of that tablet to infringe on three of Apple's "feature" (i.e., software) patents. The 4G version of the tablet was also on the verdict form, but the jury didn't find that it infringed any of Apple's design (i.e., hardware) patents. Last night, Samsung asked the court to lift a previously imposed sales ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, arguing that the jury's finding that the tablet's hardware didn't violate Apple patents eliminated the basis for the ban. Apple opposes that request, and basically doubled down by requesting a ban on the 4G Galaxy Tab as well. Apple argues that the two devices are basically the same when it comes to the software, an area where the jury decided there was infringement.

Telling her to do it herself would put me in the doghouse.

You're already in the doghouse if your wife's treating you like her personal credit card. Why not liberate yourself?

Tell her she should be glad she isn't being caned for being seen by another man without her burqua, instead of worrying about an Ipad.

Or tell her you're buy her one if she'll give you a lap dance, or something - make her work for it a little, don't be submissive to her.

And yeah, you're paying more for an Ipad simply because of the brand name. There's no practical reason to buy one.

Here are 2 tablets, take your pick:

But as an FYI, I avoid all Apple products simply because I refuse to feed a power-hungry socialist monopolistic corporation that will sue anybody that has anything even remotely like something they sell. Even going as far as suing the companies that made the first MP3 players, 3 years prior to the iPod (MP3 players first came out in 1998, I did a TV show on them in 1999, the iPod did not come out until late 2001 - just in time for Christmas).

For the life of me, there is no way that I can fathom/grok Apple as a socialist company. Period. By implication, does that include Steve Jobs? Period. Please; elucidate, so that I may stretch/whimsy my imagination/fantasies. Period. thx perioikoi

Apple is expensive. Apples buisiness practices are aggressive and tyranical. Apple has you on a leash, and charges you monthly for that leash. There is a reason that hacking your iThing is called jail breaking.

That being said, it is a very polished device. It is very easy to use. It is very well designed.

I do not give Apple money. I do not like how they operate. I do not like what they think of and how they treat their users. I do not like that they sue EVERYONE who has a competing product for patent process infringement. If you have a touchscreen, they will sue you. If you have a multi-touch touchscreen... they will sue you. I am very sad that I hate apple so much, they make such neat toys.

That being said, Android is awesome. The galaxy tab is a great product. I am particularly fond of the asus transformer tf700.
These are the two I have.

As a developer I am fond of keyboards. Being haptic I prefer actual keyboards. The second link, btw shows it attached to its keyboard dock... which also has extra battery. It is a regular tablet when not docked.

Apple makes a great product. It sets the bar for everyone else. However I prefer freedom, and I do not give people money to jail me, when I have an alternative.

My choice would be the Microsoft Surface. It can operate as either a tablet or a notebook computer. It is the one you've seen in tv commercials with the keyboard that snaps in place. It uses Windows 8 so there isn't anything to learn. Understand that, like others above, no Apple product would be allowed in my house, so I'm as biased as those who recommend the ipad.

You do not own your property. It belongs to the state of Apple, and you pay for the privelege of using it.

You do not own your tablet. You are not allowed to alter it outside of their prescribed method.
You do not own your music. Itunes is kind enough to give you limited access for a fee.
You do not own your apps. Apple can remove them if it so chooses.
You do not have access to apps not approved by Apple. The information purification

They are Socialist, as the Soviet Union was SOcialist.

In other words, a tyranical monopolistic operation that must have complete and total dominance, feeding the masses spoon-fed phrases and beliefs, and claim that everything else is either garbage, or stolen from them.

I have been following Apple now for well over 30 years, and a more evil company does not exist. Yes, they like to give this image that they are "Computers for the Masses", and that they "Care about the People". However, much like Stalinist Soviet Union, that is all propaganda. The "Computer for the People", that was eletist from day one and affordable to almost nobody. They sue anybody that makes something even close to what they make, and even those that make things before them, claiming the ideas were their first. Their failures (and yes, there are a lot of them) are quietly hidden away and never discussed, ever (Pippin anybody? Newton? MacTV?). And even things that most of the industry discarded years prior as being bad ideas (computer and monitor in one) are run out as "new products", "revolutionary designs".

And they want total control over everything. Want to release a program for Apple? Well, better get their approval first. They have to sign off on it, and if it is for their mobile items, they have to be the ones to distribute it. Sorry, that is like Ford telling me that I can only get tires from a Ford Dealer, and can only buy pre-approved gasoline that meets Ford's standards. Nope, not me, ain't gonna do it.

The Surface looks promising, but I am always hesitant to suggest anybody to be a First Adaptor. And that goes for just about any new digital product, phone, tablet, or anything else.

If I was to make a suggestion, it would be one of the many Android products. They have been around for a while now, there are a lot of variety and options for them, and plentifull software to run on them. The Surface may be a great product, and a future market dominator.

Or it may be the next Zune or Moto Q. Yea, I owned both of those, and now both are about as usefull as my Palm Treo. Great products, just that the after market and accessory and software market for them never developed. So they worked fine as they were, just could not really do anything else with them.

However, my Moto Q was my favorite cell phone, until I got my Andriod one earlier this year. And I loved my Zune, but the hard drive in it failed 14 months after I bought it, and it would cost more then a new one to replace the drive, so I got a different MP3 player. But I may still get it fixed someday, I really did love it, and it's gigantic amount of storage.

I am new at posting to Political Forum. Patience, please.
I am stumbling around, trying to find all the bells and whistles. Spell check?
My mentor has forsaken me; not even a friendly email greeting.
I am going to try out the "quote reply" button.
Please, hold the laughter down to a low roar.
Chortles and jocular rib pokes are completely acceptable.

Time to go to the New User Support Ticket System board and do some reading.

I appreciate all the comments. Thank you.
I observe Apple as a proprietary company, to extreme. I will add totalitarian, in a business sense. Malignant.
Apple does come up with creative products, aimed at the mass market. Albeit expensive.
I do not own any Apple products.
MicroSoft is in the same basket, to me.
I am migrating to Linux. Bravo for the open source community.

To call Apple socialist, with a small "s", breaks my understanding of the word socialist. Using a big "S" does not help.
Is there a new definition of socialist that I am not aware of?

Have I gotten off the original purpose of this thread? Would it be appropriate to start a "socialist" thread?
