I'm guessing that you're a right winger... because these are the people who most shout about freedom and liberty but only for their own values. Its two goose steps away from facism.

Why is the US still keeping another country as a colony?

You think brainwashing children is good? I don't. Any state that demands these ludicrous ceremonies is deeply sick if you ask me. I've taught, but I was never forced to make children accept nonsense: from religious assemblies they could be excused.

Leffe, there are huge tax differences between moving to Puerto Rico and moving to Singapore or Ireland while using corporation inversions or accounting gimmicks to maximize shareholder profit. Of the 300 plus biotech and pharmaceutical firms located in Puerto Rciok only 57 have their corporate offices located in Puerto Rico. If you want to go to a US citiy where there is a large number of biotech and pharmaceutical firms in the U.sS., go to San Antonio Texas, especially on the southwest side. You iwll have more than a couple of dozen firms there, most of them small with less than $5 million dollars in sales annually. there are about a dozen large pharmaseutical firms there with sales over #100 million.

Second, if a company moves to Puerto Rico, they are more than likely have to file form 5712A under IRC 936. This is a tax credit in which the domestic corporation with US sales will still file with their corporate tax return form. This creates complexity and an almost automatic indicator for a corporate audit. The tax savings is not that great as under IRC 969. However, Puerto Rico has been recently revamping its tax system to bring in more companies in the global tax competition that is now dominant in our global society. Furthermore, in the past, Puerto Rico is not been a tax haven for corporations and the rich because of its social and economic problems in the past, which is what the previous poster was referring to.

because the people who live there want to keep it that way, at least for now. There are some indications that PR could be come the 51st. state before too much longer. The possibility of it becoming independent is far more remote.

What? She doesn't agree with the fact that the U.S. treats 86% of the citizens of Puerto Rico with full welfare entitlements?

Virtually the entire island is living comfortably on some type of "entitlements." And the few that do have jobs, do not pay federal income tax.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the U.S. It is a de facto state of the U.S. All citizens of Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens.

But notwithstanding all the above, I nevertheless feel that no one should be compelled or forced to show respect for the U.S. flag. I myself no longer stand or pledge allegiance to the flag. Reason? The flag, the nation and the constitution has been hijacked by liberals, Democrats and minorities of whom it now represents. America belongs to them. America is no longer my country.

No place. I'm like the Native American -- I was here first. I was here before the Democratic Party socialist takeover.

Hmm..., didn't Barack Obama refuse to pledge allegiance to the flag during his campaigning?

Did Barack Obama Refuse to Say the Pledge of Allegiance?

    Chris Beason,
    Nov 6, 2007

The other day I received an email with a picture in it of Barack Obama. The email claimed that the picture was of Mr. Obama refusing to put his hand over his heart and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Of course, the email went on to state how we shouldn't vote for anyone who refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Obama agrees. I wrote a letter to Mr. Obama asking him his side of the story. At first I thought he wouldn't reply when I received a standard letter thanking me for joining his campaign. I responded letting his campaign staff know that was not my intention. A few days later, much to my surprise, he replied to my original letter.
    Dear Friend,

Thank you for inquiring about the false accusation that I have refused to sing the National Anthem or say the Pledge of Allegiance. I knew when I decided to run for President that I would not be immune from the "anything goes" form of attack politics that has been so prominent in our elections in recent years. And this outrageous charge is just another example of the kind of mean spirited, "shock" politics I will move beyond as President.

I don't think Mr. Obama kept his promise.

Amazing that somebody would actually suggest it is more honorable to cast aside beliefs in place of not causing 'a stink'.

You realize we took over puerto rico in the spanish american war right? She, and other puerto ricans who don't want to be american, and want puerto rico to be fully independent (now a minority in puerto rico be a large margin now actually), honestly have very good grounds for protesting.

Every few years there is a vote in Puerto Rico to gauge public opinion on the US Puerto Rican relationship. In last years vote more people than ever (61%), voted to become a full US state, even if that means paying all the normal taxes. The other 39% were a mix of people wanting to keep the relationship the way it its, become fully independent, and other options.

Here's another student who refused to recite the pledge.

    Here's a picture of him:

As you can see, he's white.

(not that it matters, of course, nor does it matter that the subject of this thread is from Puerto Rico, even if that is the title and the subject of a lot of the posts)

Now, is that case somehow different? If so, how?

Here's a link to the story.

So the little _______ doesn't believe that the country is indivisible with liberty and justice for all? Toss her into a concentration camp (Puerto Rico) until she does believe it.

Hmm anyone else find it interesting that many of those condemning this girl are also defending displaying the confederate flag?
