So when they have this big event, and former Homosexuals from all around the country show up, how long before they start pairing up and backsliding?
Seriously, if a person is raised as a Christian, or a Muslim or a Jew just about any belief system that sees homosexuality as an expression of evil, then it's only natural that there will be enough psychological trauma developed from the collision of the meme from the belief system, with the reality of experienced desires.
People can suppress desire, some can even convince themselves that they no longer have that desire, but the preponderance of the evidence suggests that that is just an illusion, the the underlying wiring of the desire response can't really be changed.
I'm of the belief that societal pressure has caused some people who experience desire for same sex relationships, to live their entire life suppressing this desire, and trying to channel it into and opposite sex relationships.

Because if it was really a choice, who would choose it?
If it was really an open question that the individual got to decide, who would answer the school yard bully's taunt of "What are you? Queer?" with "Yes, I think I will be, it sounds delightful", It will disappoint all those people I try so hard to please, it will destroy many of the relationships I currently cherish, but I think I will choose that and not be attracted to the opposite sex individuals that others insist are "hot". Who would do that?

I didn't choose to get sprung when looking at the opposite sex, I was trying to suppress that, but it would just happen with a little glimpse of thigh, or the curve of the female form, I would find myself obsessing and fantasizing in class while the cute teacher was giving a lecture. My sexual orientation emerged, it wasn't shaped by my input, it just sort of popped out, and I had to deal with it.
And I assume it worked the same way for my gay friends, at least that's what they tell me, and I have no reason to doubt them.
And when I'm all alone, just me and the internet, and I find myself on a porn site, I don't watch gay porn, even though no one would know, so it's not just a front I put on for social reasons, it's really the way I am. When I'm engaged in sex, I might sometimes fantasize about someone else, that someone else always seems to be female.
So what my sexual orientation is, what it is, I didn't get to choose. I was overwhelmed by it.
I suppose I could imagine myself engaged in a gay relationship, but my mind doesn't go there on it's own, and it doesn't stay there very long if I force it there.
And that is probably what these "cured" individuals experience, they really want to be heterosexual, because then Jesus will love them, and then their parents will be proud, and then the people in church will be happy for them, so they force themselves to pretend, but then they see someone and feel the desire.
That's why the "cure" doesn't work in the long run for very many people.

I don't. For those who tried and failed, that is their personal story much like those who tried and succeeded. I'm consistent about that. As I stated, the gum helps some people quit smoking but doesn't help everyone. Not all treatments work. There are some people who want to smoke. There are some people who want to quit

There are some people who want to be gay. There are some who want to convert. If you like being gay, and enjoy the lifestyle, then the success of any treatment would be in jeopardy. In fact, it would probably be a waste of time. If you want to give heterosexuality a try, and are willing, then the chances of success would no doubt be greater.

If John was boning Jim, went through some type of treatment and is now boning Joan, then who are we to question him?

The same would be true if John was boning Joan, went through treatment and is now boning Jim, who are we to question him?

    It's not our place

Exactly- I am all in favor of people celebrating for whatever reason that they want.

They want an "Ex-Gay" day, well I say good for them.

I am thinking of starting an "Ex-Left handed" day......

What would you say about secular groups like NARTH that research conversion therapy?

The idea that conversion therapy is about 'praying the gay away' is a strawman, there are secular organizations that research it. Since 50% of the cause of homosexuality is environment, not genetic, I'd say it's definitely a possibility that sexuality can be changed. A lot of 'attraction' is psychological.

    http://narth.com/

I have a feeling if you were to take a straight person, and strap them to a chair and force them to watch gay porn for a month on end, you might be able to condition them into being gay.

You know that people who've lost a dominant hand/arm have learned to be just as proficient with the other hand right?

No such thing as an "ex-gay".

And even if we accept these liars that they are "ex-gay", then doesn't that mean they are straight? Why are they identifying as "ex-gay" rather than as "straight"?

This has nothing to do with "ex-gays", this has to do with Religious Right hate groups finding some new excuse to try to demean the rights and dignity of LGBTQ people.

LMAO at the name "Voice of the Voiceless", the level of victimization complex these privileged religious hatemongers have is laughable.

So prove that homosexuality can't be changed. 50% of the cause is environmental, not genetic.

I'm not saying someone shouldn't be allowed to persue "gay conversion therapy", if they want guidance on how to live a heterosexual lifestyle (*cough*lie), then I 100% support that. I do however feel sorry for the wives and families who end up being destroyed as a DIRECT CONSEQUENCE of those programs. Sure, some "ex"-gay guys "succeed" and don't end up divorcing their wives, but how do we know they aren't cheating behind their backs? Gay conversion therapy just seems like a way of shifting the misery of self-hating gays onto unsuspecting women/children.

The burden of proof is on the person making the claim, I'd say. The vast majority of both straight and gay people say they couldn't change their sexuality even if they wanted to, so we have a relative minority of both claiming the opposite...

I'd accept as proof a penile plethysmograph study done on homosexual guys seeking "treatment", and a follow-up thereafter. NO ONE has ever agreed to do this though....

Just because something has initial environmental factors doesn't mean it can be changed past a certain age.

The burden of proof is on you to prove that sexual orientation can be changed.

    And your "50%" statistic is 110% made-up.

My sentiments exactly. I fully expect that the Right would parade out ex-gays as proof that homosexuality is a moral choice rather than an inherent biological condition. And I would further expect that the Left would deny that there is such a thing, even if it were so. This is typical of what these two routinely do. Unfortunately, both of these expectations get us no where in terms of the reality of the question - is there really a such animal as an EX-HOMOSEXUAL?. A simple question that barring political bs should be answerable (i.e. observable and measurable)..

I'm so sick of every aspect of the world being antithetically mutilated into whatever these two spectral extremes of reality warp find friendly to their assumptions, I could puke. If there really is such a thing as ex-homosexual, where the ex-gay is no longer attracted to the same sex, it should be experimentally verifiable. If it can be so verified, then let the chips fall where they may and let the deluded and their agenda be dam*ed. If it turns out to not be so, then let that reality have the same result on the other side of this idiotic war.

You really don't think that scores you any points do you?

Men in prison 'learn' to have sex with other men- doesn't mean that heterosexuals stop being attracted to women.

You can take a left handed person and they can learn how to use their right hand- if they have no left hand at all, they will become very proficient with their right hand.

But their body will still be hard wired to be left handed.

So feel free to prove that people are 'born gay' and that it can't be changed.

why do you disagree with the word of the people who say they are?

I doubt you would be as critical to those who convert to homosexuality from hetero.

I say let people do what they wish. If I want to pay money to go gay then that's my business. If you want to pay money to go straight then that's your business.

If you're happy being gay that does not give you any right to deny those who want to go straight. The leftist in you just can't let people be.

If stupid adults want to waste their money on "ex-gay" therapy schemes that don't work, fine. But there is no scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed, it should be illegal to force this sort of harmful scheme upon children, and anyone who claims that it can be done should be called out as the liars that they are.

then how do you feel about gay parents who give hormone treatment to children in order to change their gender? Should that also be illegal?

WTF are you talking about? Gay parents giving hormones to their children?

If you're referring to transgender youth, that has nothing to do with whether parents are gay or not, it has to do with a youth who realizes he or she is transgender wants to transition to the gender (s)he was mentally born as. It is not forced upon children, nor is it completely useless and harmful the way "ex-gay" therapy is. Completely irrelevant here.

Why do you make up BS like this?

No study anywhere has proven, PROVEN that homosexuality is genetic in any way shape or form. Its just another liberal lie amongst so many.

They do what you do, put "likely" or "strong possibility" in front of all claims because they aren't honest enough to admit their junk science has proved nothing.

What planet have you been living on?

The stories of parents of transgender children are well-documented thanks, largely, to a 2006 report in The Village Voice that profiled the nation’s youngest transgender girl.
The stories that followed delved deeper into the lives of transgender children and their families – the turmoil and triumphs, the love, acceptance and support, and the fear, heartache and confusion.
Incredulous readers have empathized with families of transgender kids, whose lives have been documented by major media outlets coast to coast.
Certainly, we were stunned and inspired by the courage of these children and their families.

    http://www.gaylesbiantimes.com/?id=10843

This summer, Tammy began the next phase of transition, taking hormone-blocking drugs. This controversial medical treatment prevents children from experiencing puberty.

Girls who feel more like boys take hormone-suppressing medications so they will not develop breasts and start menstruating. Boys who identify as girls can take blockers to avoid developing broad shoulders, deep voice and facial hair. The drugs put their puberty on pause, so they can figure out whether to transition genders.

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/27/health/transgender-kids/

This is nothing short of assault on a child. To think you as a parent have the audacity to manipulate your child's gender with drugs before they finish puberty is an abomination.

You really need to research your side more carefully next time. You've got some sick child abusing freaks who use drugs to manipulate their children before puberty.
