why don't they tell my friends who work for the State Dept. who have two kids and a mortgage, that they are furloughed as part of a "slimdown"?

So when you were on strike with the union did you consider getting the employer to cease PART of his operation a "Shut down"?

Not that either side would utilize deliberately developed terms and sound bites based on communication psychology to either postively or negatively influence their less than brilliant viewship.

For the hundreds of thousands of workers who won't get paid, this is a shutdown.

For all the veterans who can't sign up for their VA benefits, this is a shutdown.

 

We should cut that spending as well.

They all do have compasses and are aware of the direction they're hiking ,. Emergency call outs are mainly due to sudden /unpredicted changes in weather conditions.

-but I take it you've spent your life at a keyboard /armchair etc + have never done any hiking/mountaineering or other outdoor pursuits , so you wouldn't know what's happening in the real world + what's its all about, would you ?.

Lost hikers are searched for by the Civil Air Patrol, which is the USAF auxiliary. We do over 90% of the inland search and rescue in USA. We are volunteers and we do not get paid. The time we spend volunteering gets credited to our USAF reserve time; but that's it. The only cost at all to taxpayers is that USAF pays for the aircraft and that our missions are controlled by USAF. We are now flying some drug interdiction flights for Homeland Security, but when we do that I believe Homeland Security must pay USAF for use of the aircraft and flight control personnel. But we still do not get paid when we fly those high-bird mission for Homeland Security. Still free. We do other things for free. CAP was the first to fly over Twin Towers and survey the damage when 9-11 happened. CAP sank German U-Boats off the coast of USA with our non-gunned single engine search-and-rescue aircraft by manually dropping bombs on the boats. We also teach most of the aerospace education to children in High School and Middle School.

 

Most of the states that get farm subsidies are Red states, paid for by mostly by Blue states. I would think the GOP is all for continuing farm subsidies.
