Author Tom Clancy, the “hawkish master of military thrillers,” has died at age 66 of what nndb.com describes as “illness.”

He wrote popular military novels and was a staunch Republican who appeared on Fox News and blamed the events of 9/11 on Democrats.

Clancy was eighteen years old at the height of the Viet Nam War but didn't serve due to some combination of being in college and being nearsighted. Funny, that's the same thing that kept Newt Gingrich out!

Even stranger is the fact that Clancy was never seen wearing glasses and Gingrich is only rarely seen wearing them, per my Google Image search.

    Wow.

This is how the OP approaches somebodies death? Simply because they didn't agree with you on politics?

    How utterly disgusting.

Clancy was a Republican, which automatically makes him the enemy of JEFF9K... a guy who worships at the altar of the draft dodger Bill Clinton.

That is what the left does. They go over anyone who they don't like with a lot of heated and force. If they don't like you, they will try and destroy you both professional and personally. Case in point look at Sara Palin's son who has Down Syndrome. Anyone knows that Downs is caused by extra chromosome. But, that isn't what the left did was it. They put out that he has Down Syndrome because Sara wanted to long to the hospital.

Asking a relevant question about someone isn't "smearing."

He's in the news and it's a time to assess his legacy.

    Don't feel sorry for him.

I did a google search for "Tom Clancy glasses" and saw about 100 different pictures of him wearing glasses. Some indoors, some outdoors, some regular glasses, some sun glasses. So your primary supporting statement - that he has never been seen wearing glasses - is moronic.

Many severely nearsighted people can't wear contact lenses.

Most people who wear contact lenses wear glasses occasionally.

Clancy didn't look like the type of person with the vanity to avoid being seen with glasses.

I knew of people who were blind as bats who got drafted into Viet Nam. It's kind of suspicious.

Jeff, this is not okay. Clancy was no Breitbart or Michael Moore. He wasn't someone who had a major negative impact on the world or American politics. He was a fiction author. Were his works often a neo-con's wet dream? Yeah. Was it pop fiction like what Dan Brown did? Yeah. But the man's dead. Let's not dance on his grave. He didn't earn that kind of abuse. I read and enjoyed a few books in the Net Force series, and The Bear and the Dragon was a lot of fun. As said, neo-con wank material, but fun to read.

He's in the news NOW, and the topic is relevant. I doubt that he will be hurt by an assessment of his life.

    - - - Updated - - -

Don't worry about it. A relevant assessment won't hurt him.

It's pretty suspicious that he had such severe myopia that he was unfit for any kind of military service but can EVER get along without glasses.

    It's YOU that is.

Reading glasses worn around the neck are for FARSIGHTEDNESS, not NEARSIGHTEDNESS!!

It's the OPPOSITE of what kept him out of Viet Nam!!

Clancy was an interesting writer - better on technology/weapons systems than on people, but he did well. He had a nice run, sold lots of books, articles. He was v. good @ researching the details of his novels. I don't begrudge him a bit of success. If he could write best-sellers in his down time as an insurance salesman, then we could all do wonders, if we put our minds to it.

    Pass in review, friends.

    WTF?

You said that "nearsighted" was part of the reason that kept Clancy out of the Vietnam War and then you went on to say "that Clancy was never seen wearing glasses."

I'll repeat it again. Not only is your OP disgusting, it also makes you look like a fool.

By definition, Clancy was a chickenhawk, but at least he didn't go one to run for politics and then advocate for war.

I've got no real problem with non-politicians chickenhawks. It's the politician ones that need to be tarred and feathered.

It's not "what the left does."

The left doesn't take orders from one voice on the radio, like the right does.

The left has the freedom to be all over the board.

    That doesn't make sense!!

If you are so nearsighted that the Army can't use you in time of war, chances are that you will wear really thick glasses.

READING GLASSES are totally different from glasses for nearsightedness.

After a certain age, EVERYONE needs reading glasses.

PRESBYOPIA is the opposite of MYOPIA!!
