And especially if they demand all the free services that their new country of residence provides. It's called quid pro quo.

I didn't pick any. Basically English is the language of our nation, that and some ridiculous dead language Latin nonsense (only mildly). Generally speaking English is the language used in our law (aside from some ridiculous Latin words mixed in that when anybody ever says themthey have to explain what they mean in plain English).

To make it official? What purpose would that serve?

English is our unofficial language, and should (and will) remain so. No good reason to make it official. That's just extra work for the government.

I can understand the idea of banning putting out government publications in other languages, though.

Absolutely yes. I have no problem with people speaking foreign languages and I could give a crap if they never spoke any English in their day to day lives or if McDonalds puts up Spanish menus but at some point we have to decide that all government and business communication should be done in one single language for efficiency. English is the superior language in that it is far more flexible than other languages and it is already the international language of business and diplomacy.

all govt. business should be done in English.

all business signs should be in English, but can have non-English words below them and in a smaller font.

Mandarin Chinese is actually one of the easiest foreign languages to learn. I took it in high school. Every word is only one syllable. And there are only four tones. Once you get used to them, it's pretty simple. What I never did understand, though, was how you can sing in Mandarin since everything is tonal. I guess you can use context clues to figure out which tone is being used in a given line, but when "bird" and "urine" are only separated by a vocal inflection that is now being blurred for the sake of melody, it seems like it would make for some hilarious misheard lyrics.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go take a bird.
