But lets remember that the Tin Pan Alley era was dominated by Jazz influences. Rock N Roll to Jazz was what Punk was to the dinosaur bands of the late 60s and 70s.

 

Yep. The way they put dissonance and complexity into chords and progressions, tensions and resolutions -- in a word, craft -- is something that rock left out entirely, and of course Punk was invented so that people who couldn't play an instrument or carry a tune could still be 'musicians.'

 

Psh! All you young kids and your rocks and your rolls. Back in my day, we had real artists. I'll never forget going to see Classicalpalooza in the summer of 1788. It featured Mozart, Haydn, a young and upcoming Beethoven, and a recently resurrected poltergeist of Johann Sebastian Bach. It was a most resplendent extravaganza.

Few non-musicians have the faintest idea just how much a role classical music played in what the Beatles wrote.

I wasn't yet 21 and was on leave from advanced training when my foster father took me to a run-down bar in Pasadena, Cal. There was a beat-up old upright baby grand against the back wall with a large brandy snifter on top of it.

The bartender clearly know jack and asked him if he wanted to play a set "until Art showed." Jack really got agitated and made it clear he wasn't about to sit down at that piano. He proceeded to put away a couple of shots of straight rye on the rocks. I, still being a "good Mormon" sipped a soda.

After about a half hour, an old black man entered, using a white cane with a red tip to make his way to the piano. He hung his coat on a hook next to the piano and folded his cane, laying it on top of the piano.

The bartender put a shot glass in his hand and he downed it in one gulp. The bartender was ready with another, setting it atop the piano.

And then the old guy began to play.

No exercises. No pauses to figure out what to play.

Just amazing chords and fingerings I can still hear more than 5 and a half decades later.

The bar had filled to standing room only and I'm certain it far exceeded the official capacity. But, as several uniformed police officers were by the door, nobody was going to complain.

Not a sound out of the crowd while he played. Not even a cough or a sneeze.

And, when he finished, the applause and roars of approval could be heart a block away.

My foster father didn't have to tell me who the old, blind guy was -Art Tatum!

All other piano players fade next to him.

 

Great story.

 

I grew up on Big Band, Dixieland Jazz, and the old nose twangy country sound. If 'Lovesick Blues' didn't phase you, you were a dead man.

Never got into Rock too much, but as I aged it amazed me how mellow the Beatles and Elvis became.
