It's pretty sick that the unions would blame home schooling. Adam Lanza's mother was so angry at education chiefs for failing her son, according to relatives, she said "screw 'em" and yanked him out of school. They apparently weren't providing her disturbed son the services she expected. BTW, she was a rich woman and should have put him in an institution when he was young....and not waited until he was up in his teen years. She was trying to find a place to put him in when he killed her and killed all those young children.

And she was extremely stupid to keep all those guns inside the home....knowing full-well her son was a very disturbed person. Evidently, the father had washed his hands of the son long ago.......

Failing to make adequate progress? Isn't that the job of the public schools?

here in Indiana, the homeschool students do much better than the kids in public education. All public educations is, is nothing else than a political game with the kids paying for it. .....and the taxpayers.
homeschool tend to out-perform their peers in job advancement. I think I read somewhere that they tended to do better in creating new businesses.
They, in turn, homeschool their children. Most kids I knew that were homeschooled were often given the chance to switch, at 16 I think, and many of those few, tested out to senior year and graduated no sweat before 17.
And think of it, they wont be exposed to school shootings.

HOMESCHOOL KIDS are a mixed bag at best. We always hear about the PRODIGIES who go on to the Ivy's and the 'football' rockstars. No one talks about kids who can't read, are unprepared to FILL OUT JOB APPLICATIONs, who are lacking severely in the hard sciences. (How does MOM set up a biology lab in the family dining room). Then there are the ones whose textbooks are the BIBLE.

This was a failed experiment. It's genesis was RACE--integration (big surprise) and was glommed onto by the RW religious renegades (anyone wanna make a bet race ain't a factor with the 'Christians' as well.

The scariest part of HOMESCHOOLING? There's scarce data! If there is accountability in one state, there is none in the next. My state is currently doing studies on CHARTER SCHOOLS. 1/2 are FAILING.

What a total and across the board screed of cra -- er -- crud! In every state of this Union home schooled students are required to pass state mandated tests on a periodic basis, period. Sheesh!

CPS is there to prevent abuse (whether or not the kid is in public school), you don't need a separate set of educational regulations here. You can however boost CPS funding.

I have a great idea for a group of bureaucrats that can monitor and regulate children - their own parents!

Here's a link to a site friendly to the home school movement which rates each state's regulations.

Yes, over decades. I do not oppose home schooling, since I know there are valid reasons for it. However, I also know that it has been used as a shield and allowed abuse of children that has resulted in death.

In other words, they are acting like any local, public school district. Don't know about Indiana, but down here in Georgia, we call that re-inventing the wheel.

Fine. Let's stipulate the 95% of them are what you say. Now, what about the other 5% (or perhaps even smaller percentage)? Should they just be ignored because the 95% are doing well?

Check the government school graduation rates. Check the literacy rates of government school graduates. Check the mountain of money spent to remediate government school graduates.

You're arguing for perfection from home schoolers, while ignoring the rather pitiful statistics generated by government schools.

I am a homeschooling parent of a 15 year old. He went to public school up until last school year. The reason I removed him from public school is because public school was failing him. I don't mean he was failing, in fact, he passed all his classes. The problem was he wasn't learning anything an no one cared. He made it through Algebra 1, and passed, but didn't know the basic algebra functions. His school had gym teachers teaching the kids these important classes, like algebra, which is so important for their grades and future math classes. The teachers are the one who get the free pass because they keep their jobs while failing these kids in terms of what they are learning. Not all teachers are good teachers and I will no longer let my kid be at the mercy of the public school system having the right teachers in charge of my son's education.

    Indeed so.

Test scores don't say that. All standardized test scores do is rank children. They don't really say anything about what they have truly learned. Students who want an education can get one at any public school in this country. Students who don'twant an education won't get an education. That's the real problem, we have too many kids who really don't care about getting an education.

Actually, the modern homeschooling movement came from the left. It was the hippies, and similar folks who wanted out of the system. Admittedly, it has been coopted mainly by the religious right, but the origin had nothing to do with race. Do you just make this stuff up?

My observation is that the majority of homeschoolers do a good job. There is a minority that doesn't, but my bet is that their kids weren't doing well in public schools either.

If you want to know what my argument is, just ask; do not presume to know or tell me what my argument is. What are "government schools"? I'm familiar with public schools, public libraries, public parks, public roads, but 'government schools' kinda has me stumped.

Speak for your own district. Mine is looking pretty good right now because we have thousands of people looking to make it better every day of every year, not to mentions tens of thousands of involved parents. You want good schools? Get off your butt and get involved instead of sitting back and making noise. You'll also find it's a lot easier to criticize from the cheap seats than it is to be on the field and helping to make real decisions about real people. Shucks, you might even learn something.

Homeschoolers outperform there public school counterparts on tests.

In contrast, my city of Milwaukee has a graduation rate of around 50% and even those that do manage to graduate are usually below their grade level so they are woefully illprepared for college. But hey, its being run by the government so everything is A Ok. Nothing to see here move along, move along.

I've never seen a homeschool grad who couldn't make change and lots of public school grad clueless about coins.

But what doe that have to do with the governmental abuse of homeschoolers based on Adam Lanza?

Because homeschooling takes very little time off and schooling replaces day care, homeschoolers can start their kids early and grind away 8 hours a day 350 days a year and (getting some external help from the community in the form of specialist teachers (retired engineers to teach math, retired doctors to teach chemistry, etc)) homeshoolers can get the required twelve years class time polished off in eight or nine years.

Most homeschooled "fourth graders" can pass the ISTEP tests (required for graduation) easily. All to many public school "graduates" never do.

Homeschool isn't for everyone but it should be apart of the mix and supported by government same as public schools.

I believe conservatives here are intentionally misreading what the Daily Caller is reporting.

For starters, there are over 30,000 different types of mental disorders ranging from ADD to Zellweger Syndrome. These mental disorders range from mild to extreme, depending on the severity of the mental disorder.

Second, private and government health insurance do not treat mental disorders adequately. This can get expensive. With Adam Lanza, he had parents who had the money to pay of the best medicine possible until he turned 18. After that, he would be extremely difficlut to commit him to any mental institution in the State of Connecticut, much less anywhere else. However, that may not be an option for most parents who probably do not have the financial resources as the Lanza's.

Generally, mental health is part of the overall coverage for personal health insurance. However, there are separate plans for mental health, but these are like private unemployment insurance, restrictive, costly, and not very beneficial. Under most private and government health insurance, there is a time limit, usually 90 days for treatment without prior permission. The health insurance may have co pays for prescription medicine, but that would depend on the level of the drug. Most mental health drugs are in the III and IV category. If the symptom is severe or uncommon, you are usually talking about high copays with no generic option available. What this means is that most parents may not have the financial resources as the Lanza's to cope with mental illness of their child.

The commission is on the right track here. However, more details will be needed before any final analysis of how good or bad the bill may be.

By coordingating efforts with parents and school officials, we can avoid what the mother of Adam Lanza did, get prevention soonerer, and possibly reduce the risk of another Adam Lanza type incident.

Who gets to determine "adequate progress?" A government bureaucrat in the school system?

I feel sorry for home-schooled children. They never seem quite right. I don't know if they're school at home because they're different, or their different because they're schooled at home, but there's something worrisome there.
