It's a free country. If the employees don't want to work crappy hours, then they can better themselves by getting better educated and get a better job that pays more and is salaried with benefits.

I went to a Radio Shack awhile ago; nothing there you can't get at a Target or Wal-Mart at the same price or cheaper. And those places used to be everywhere.

When I was in college, I worked in places you'd expect to be open every day. I specifically remember working at Carl's Jr. on Thanksgivings when most of the other restaurants were closed and we got swamped every time. I kind of expect grocery stores to be open, at least with reduced hours so I'm not surprised about several of those stores. I'm surprised the article didn't complain about Denny's, or 7-11.

Okay guys. No using any electricity on Thanksgiving. Those greedy power companies force workers to man the power plants on Thanksgiving. No pooping if you're on public sewerage. You're just going to have to hold it. No calling an ambulance or having a house fire. Don't use any toll roads. Don't watch any live TV. Don't fly, bus, train, or cab anywhere. Y'all are going to have to take in a prisoner or two, a couple of kids from group homes, a dimentia patient, and a few homeless.
    ...

Man there's a ton of people who work holidays.

So it is the greedy consumers, not the greedy stores that are to blame for stores opening earlier.

Sure some do volunteer, fine. But to tell people that they will be fired if they ask for the day off is just wrong.

I have no problem with these stores being open on Thanksgiving. They exist to make a profit, after all.

I just think these guys sitting in tents for over a week are nuts. As I was leaving Best Buy, a number of people were looking at them and laughing. Talk about not having a life!

No different than when a new iphone comes out.

As far as "forcing" employees to work, I heard on the radio news these places are giving the employees the option to work, and apparently they're getting paid double time for doing it.

It's the nature of some businesses. You're darn right a cable company will have people working on holidays to keep the signal pumping because if it goes down you damn well bet the same morons whining about businesses being open will be the same ones screeching about how their cable company sucks and threaten to drop their subscription, etc.

These same people rarely, if ever, comprehend their own demand drives what a lot of businesses do.

For me, advertising is like the tv or the radio, I can choose to listen or watch if I want to. I couldn't care less when they start advertising anything. Christmas in July? Go for it, doesn't bother me at all.

I think society is just being conditioned to be offended at everything.

    Sears bought out K-Mart.

I'm surprised Sears is still around, frankly. The majority of their own brand stuff is low-end junk. They're more interested in selling you some service agreement than putting out a quality product (and yes, I worked part-time at Sears early in my military career).

With that said, I do buy/own Craftsman hand tools only because of the no-questions-asked life time warranty and the proliferation of Sears stores.

Depends. When you agree to work at a company and you know they are open holidays, that means they have to be staffed. There's a chance you will be scheduled for one.

Don't like it, don't work there.

You know, it used to be that employers would offer double pay on holidays, so it would be all voluntary and they could find some employees willing to do it.
But now, with high unemployment and often few other options, employers can pretty much make their employees do whatever they want. Don't like it? There are plenty of others willing to take your place.

Sometimes I think people whom are online are really the reality...an posts like these show me how some, have just totally lost touch with reality. I mean honestly do you ENJOY paying $45 for a phone charger when you can make one your self from $10 worth of parts from radio shack?, improving your CPU clock speed....need a diode, capacitor, or even a small headphone piece to fix your Dre. Beats headphones? hmmmm lemme run to best buy an get some monster wire for $100 per 20 ft of copper...i understand ignorance makes others profit...but come on...people who think like you...Actually won the republican election for alot of citys, nation wide....WHY??? Remember BUSH?

Same here. Although my wife is working Thanksgiving night I have it off this year. However when we do work holidays we are compensated in some way for it.

7 posts in and you've already managed to embarrass yourself. You might want to research your statements before hitting the "reply" button from now on, especially when you decide to add condescension and out-of-left-field George Bush references.

Here, let me pick a left-wing source for you. Enjoy:

    How's that "reality" looking now?

Ok you win...shop on black Friday/Thursday/Christmas in July. You saw your info online, so there it must be true. Like i said...ME Personalty, I wont shop those days...but employers are only in America to make a profit, so i don't condone work or your fired...but at the same time, Some things need to stay functioning despite any such holiday., an as for personal states election...had Muriel Browser run as an R with the exact same statements an policys...id have still voted for her. No Out of left field statements...bush was crap. was voted out second election...but there i was in 2006 guarding Chaneys oil fields over seas, on an Aircraft carrier in arab country. My bad, I thought I was there to defend my country.

Interesting how you don't fault any of the people who work for these companies for, you know, taking a job there if they have such a problem with it. Most companies directly ask on their applications if you'll be available to work holidays. What kind of person says yes and then complains about it?

That's a nice disjointed rant. No clue how it relates to my refutation of your previous post, but I accept your concession.

    If you don't like it:

    a) don't sign an employment contract that doesn't allow for Thanksgiving day off
    b) quit your job that does not have such a clause
    c) suck it up and take responsibility for what you consent to
