This post sums it up nicely. Easy to imagine some of these posters think working 40 hrs a week is cruel and unusual punishment in itself.

I used to do recruiting for a company that does airline catering and runs airport restaurants. Remember interviewing seniors at Purdue and wondering how their parents who paid $70,000 for their degree felt about their kid competing for a job starting out at $15K, requiring relocation, long hours and working every weekend and holidays.

Work is hard... otherwise they'd call it play. ;)

Yeah overtime sucks . Not like I haven't worked holidays. Hell I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Newyears in Iraq back on 03 but didn't get any OT. Working on holidays comes with the job, and if you don't like it find another job. Thats what I did.

it is not the companies you want to convince, it is the consumers who want to shop on Thanksgiving Day you need to convince. The stores are going to be open as long as there is a consumer demand to be open on Thankgiving Day.

I have never had a problem working on a holiday. It is possible to still celebrate and work if you adjust some things around. I always welcome money. Turkey tastes just as good on Friday or Wednesday. I am pragmatic like that.

Does pot/kettle have any meaning for you? You don't appreciate Rep. Pelosi's observation that the Democrats are freeing people from the drudgery of work, not just on holidays but on all days.

I'm surprised Barnes & Noble isn't keeping its doors permanently closed. People still go to bookstores?

I agree. For me the best thing about black Fridays is watching the Youtube videos from Walmart where the low info crowd beat the crap out of each other over a 20 dollar toaster oven

They by law have to pay at least double time there's no used to about it. Some pay triple time as a reward for the employees.

I was a member of a labor union for the first 9 1/2 years of my 41 year career. If we had to work on a holiday the company paid us at 2 1/2 times our normal rate. Funny....we wanted to work as many holidays as we could. Thanks to the union we also gained half a dozen new holidays during that period. By the time I was promoted to salary there were eleven recognized holidays in a year. If a holiday fell on a weekend we were paid for the Friday before or the Monday following. The saddest day in U S history for ordinary working people was when big labor unions were pushed out by politicians siding with companies. It started when Reagan fired PATCO:

As you seek, you shall find. Most people just settle because they aren't motivated enough to pursue what they truly want in life. As the saying goes, "Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it."

Everybody at our place...about 8800 loved the union. Before this rich man's game is complete unions will be the only hope a working man will have. Companies are the greediest entities on earth. They will perform a blow job in order to cut their bottom line expenses. They have no pride......only power and money.

Typically these businesses pay double-time for working on a holiday and most employees can use the money. Generally they ask for volunteers to work the holiday and don't have any problem finding the workforce they require. Whenever the companies I worked for asked for volunteers to work a holiday I always raised my hand. It's "gravy money" and rather foolish to turn it down for most people.

While many do pay double-time and a few pay triple-time that is not in the federal labor laws. Federal labor laws only require time-and-a-half for hours worked in excess of 40-hours per week.

Companies you worked for? Just how many are we talking about and at what level. Any company I've ever heard of didn't pay their managerial and engineering people extra for anything....'course I only worked for a big company 41 years...all three payrolls, hourly, weekly salaried and exempt.

Exactly! We were talking about big companies who sell Christmas gifts and others who profit from people while they are out shopping.

    That wouldn't be me.

I don't mind that Chick Fil A is closed on Sunday, and I've never been in a Hobby Lobby store.

As long as there's one store which is open where I can buy beer I don't give a damn if they close all of them:smile:
