    Should hate speech be illegal?

some argue that it should be a crime to incite and fuel hatred towards Muslims, Jews, Christians, Islam, Mormons, blacks, Gays.

should it be illegal to say hateful things towards cultural, religious, national, ethnic groups?

i think the only speech that should be illegal, is that speech that calls for violence against specific individuals or groups.

now, what about calling for all Muslims to be deported, or all Jews to be sent to Israel, or all Mormons to lose their citizenship?

should that be illegal? i say no...for now.

there is lots of unpleasant speech
regulating unpleasantness is impractical and inherently subjective
think how much wr would loose here on pf if it were constricted against what some one found objectionable

No, I don't think it should be illegal. Inciting violence might be a different matter though, depending on the circumstances. I'm pretty sure it is illegal to threaten the POTUS, isn't it? Also, if you were to say you had a bomb or there was a bomb on an airplane or something? Yeah, you might get into a little trouble for saying those kinds of things.

Not just no, but HELL NO!!!

    Why not?

Because, as you well know, hate speech laws allows Jihad to flourish because no one can legally criticize Islam.

Muslims (like you?) would love to have hate speech laws enacted here.

Then any time anyone pointed out how murderous, bigoted, hateful and deceitful the Prophet was they could be brought up on charges.

    No way.

EDIT: That is exactly how and why Europe has become a Eurabian hell hole where every non Muslim must live in fear or be wary of offending Muslims as the Muslims take on an air of mastery of the societies and populations there.

The problem with making 'hate speech' illegal is who defines it.

I think the only speech that should be illegal is speech that calls for unlawful violence AND there is high probability that someone will also immediately act on it.

So hate speech should be legal, and also threats or incitements of violence should be legal as long as they arent likely to lead to actual violence.

Under no circumstances. Some hate crimes should be crimes anyway, but there shouldn't be any additional crime for it being against minorities. That's what judicial discretion in sentencing is for.

I've given an Italian answer, since here it's a crime to speak in a way to incite to violence the audience.

seems we all pretty much agree that absent a call for violence, hate speech should remain legal.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean hate speech needs to be tolerated by the community.

just like we can protest and boycott the Westboro Baptist Church, we can also protest and boycott these anti-Muslim groups who's only goal seems to be to offend, antagonize and bait Muslims.

Pam Geller is an evil witch, her actions bring nothing good to the USA, and she should be shunned/boycotte till here hate speech ends, just as we do with David Duke or Tom Metzger.

No, in this instance the person who acts on it is committing the crime and only that person. A law like that is an insult to everyone, it assumes that you have no control over your own actions. That if someone tells you to do something violent you'll act on it.

Pam Geller is an American hero on par with Rosa Parks or Larry Flint. This post insults you more then Pam Geller.

Rosa Parks didn't try to antagonize people, she only tried to live like a full citizen of her country.

She and others knew damn well that she was antagonizing people, that was the point.

Would that mean a good number of black rap artists would face charges for their lyrics about capping whites and raping females?

No, it shouldn't, as long as direct threats aren't made.

IMO direct threats should be legal as well, they are still just words. As for being worried about threats becoming actions I'd rather hear the threat and be prepared vs. the threat not being said out of fear. Still it's the people that don't make threats that you have to worry about.
