Northern Ireland bakery stops serving all wedding cakes so they can't be made to do gay ones -
    Full title is above

below is a snippet from the story

Ashers Baking Company was found guilty earlier this month after refusing to make a pro-gay Bert and Ernie cake.

As they are not a religious organization, the judge ruled they cannot discriminate against LGBTI people.

the history to the story is that this bakery in particular was targeted by the homosexual activists because of the biblical name as well as symbols. They also had religious sayings hanging within the shop. The bakery would not write homosexual messages upon a cake and the homosexual activists did what any reasonable eprson would do. No, they did not go next door to the other bakery, they contacted the govt and began an assault upon the bakery.

Now we have yet another small business who is being told by the govt that they must write pro gay-lifestyle messages upon a cake despite their moral objections.

I say kudos to the bakery for taking a stand but it is sad to witness the assault upon morals.

If you live in a place with rules for business and you don't follow the rules you should be called on it. It is your choice to open the business and it is your choice to assume the consequences. Discrimination is not a Christian value and baking a cake does not violate a religion.

Well it seems like that is their point, it is their business which they decided doesnt make wedding cakes anymore.

Trying to silence people is so wrong though, that Kristen Powers book was a good read. I would identify so much more to the left if they would stop doing such.

Discriminating against those funny hand puppets on Sesame Street is just not on.

Kind of in two minds for this one.
If the image of the cake in the link is accurate then it is a political or social message rather than an expression of personal love.
I don't think a business should be forced to print/make/design goods that carry a political message if they don't want.

As opposed to an item that reads like "Bert and Ernie together forever" - if they want to not support a personal commitment of love then perhaps as a baker they can open a private members only business...if that allows them to follow their conscience, stay within the law, fly beneath the gaydar and still provide baked goods.

If the cake is the one depicted in the picture that is NOT a wedding cake that is a purely political message and any business can choose to not print political statements they do not agree with. If it was a "Steve and John's Wedding" cake that would be different.

I suppose we all noticed this is from ireland....

That said, i live near san Francisco
I think we are likely to have our share of gay weddings

The very peculiar thing is that i do not remember a single time where this sort of incident was reported in the local news here.... Maybe we only have bakeries with no moral values so it does not bother them?

Or maybe this sort of thing just doesnt happen a lot

The LGBT Community. They are drama queens who vie for attention in anyway they can. Making something look really bad is usually a good way to get attention. Remember the Duck Dynasty incident? Exactly. They can't respect someone else's belief like they are trying to force everyone one else. It's a disgusting double standard.

Maybe it's to help pay for their ever increasing need for HIV/AIDS treatments.

These people are idiots? What kind of BUSINESS is this? What kind of CAPITALISTS are they? Instead of doubling their wedding cake business, they eliminate it 100%?

Doubling? Try maybe a 1.9% increase at the maximum.

Imo, it is a PR gambit
They lose what might be a small wedding cake business
And gain huge publicity and probably business from those who feel as they do and want to support their cause. Kinda clever in that way

Well, it's Ireland, so different laws from here in the USA.

I don't agree with a government forcing a baker to create a written message or depiction, as it amounts to compelled speech. Apparently Ireland has different ideas about that.

One has to admire his integrity. His convictions are worth more than money to him. This doesn't say much though for the laws in Northern Ireland, where a pressure group can over ride the rights of in individual store owner to serve whomever he pleases, and whenever he pleases.

What someone should do, is go into another bakery in Northern Ireland and ask them to make a wedding cake with the words: Anyone who isn't a Papist is going to hell. I wonder what the judicial response will be to that?

If they don't bake wedding cakes does that mean they don't bake cakes for weddings?

Well running your mouth about your politics tends to be unfavorable. You might lose a lot of business.

The judge essentially ruled that because the bakery is a registered business and not a religious organisation, it falls under the equality legislation of Northern Ireland. So if you are a bakery, you bake cakes and have no right to refuse business on the grounds that it goes against your religious beliefs. The law must be as strict as in this case, otherwise businesses would potentially use all kinds of examples to refuse customers. Customers who it has to be noted were doing nothing wrong.

There is a particularly extreme evangelical faction in Northern Irish politics. Only recently, as the debate was raging about Ireland's (South) same sex marriage referendum, the Northern Irish minister of health claimed on a discussion show that children of gay parents are 40% more likely to be abuse their children than heterosexual parents. This was the minister of health saying this.

Northern Ireland is the only part of Britain and Ireland that doesn't legally allow same sex marriage.

I personally think it's incredibly stupid for People to think a wedding cake is fundamentally different than any other cake. I've tasted them both, they are both made out of the same ingredients. My question is, what in the Hell does the baker care where they are eaten? And further how is it against his religion for a cake to be eaten at a gay wedding?

Does he also not make them for Bar Mitzvahs? It's far worse in Christianity to not accept Christ than it is to be homosexual.

It's all about politics and these Christians are simply lying, they aren't a religion, they are a political party. They just masquerade under that guise so that they can say their political opinions are religious. That way when they say something stupid and wrong they can just claim it was religious speech.

It's actually pretty clever. That (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) that ran that Scheme and called it westboroug Baptist church, actually used religion to make a fortune. So called religions that attempt to steer the political direction of the country are the exact same kind of scheme.

You can get away with a lot more, you can dupe a lot more cult followers into voting this way or that if you excuse stupidity with God. And people in the United states are wondering why atheism is growing.

As of the last census over 80% of Irish people (South) define themselves as being Catholic. Yet in the same sex marriage referendum last week, 62% of voters voted in favour of SSM. Not only does the Catholic Church object strongly to SSM, it still will not recognise practicing homosexuals (whatever that means?) as members of the church.

With the horrific sex abuse cases and cover ups, the stranglehold of political power that the church has in Ireland has, in the last 20 years, almost evaporated. All of the parliamentary parties vigorously backed a 'Yes' vote in the SSM referendum. That will tell you all you need to know about the political landscape here. The last outstanding issue concerning Ireland's shift towards a secular nation befitting of the title 'Republic', is that of the Catholic Church’s patronage of 95% of all the schools in Ireland. All of the schools are 100% funded by the state, yet a member of the clergy sits on the board of every school. It is not uncommon for a child of no faith, or other, to be refused entry. This in a school funded entirely by the state.

But apart from that, Ireland has turned into a fairly progressive, socially liberal country. They say smaller countries have the ability to changer faster. Well, Ireland are currently the first, and only, nation to introduce SSM via a popular vote.

Who would ever have thought that you would see scenes like this in Dublin:

Well legally this NI company are breaking the law by refusing to decorate a cake for the same-sex marriage couple.

The law should be changed to allow people to express their own prejudices IMO. As without prejudices we have no self opinion. It is a natural human instinct to posses prejudices. Even if that prejudice is one that the liberal-left have hatred towards, such as right-wing, Jews, Christians, Capitalists ... all of which the liberal-left hate & have successfully managed to introduce (over time in Europe) laws to ban them from expressing their opinions.

By the same token, should a Jewish baker who suffered in a concentration camp years ago be required to decorate a cake with a swastika on it praising Hitler on his birthday?
Should a black baker be obligated to decorate a cake with a burning cross or a noose hanging from a tree for a KKK member's birthday?
There are literally thousands of possibilities that could be similarly and understandably distasteful to fill at the request of a customer. I would say that a business owner should be free to run HIS business the way HE wants without catering to the whims of any customer he chooses not to serve for any reason whatsoever! He is NOT keeping his customer from taking his business elsewhere, nor is he making any attempt to have another business stop serving that same customer! It's HIS flour, HIS eggs, and HIS sugar! He should be free to do with them what he wants!!!
