Citing several message boards and forums that demonstrate that it's common for all Hispanic folks to be referred to as "Mexicans" isn't meant to transform Mexico into a race.
It's meant to demonstrate that when ignorant folks like Trump want to pander to their ignorant base, they fearmonger about anyone different from themselves using the language that their base understands... Which includes calling all Hispanic people "Mexicans".

My point was that terms shouldn't be interchangeable, but often are used that way - especially by those who are prone to making hasty generalizations.

 

I'm on the left coast so I rarely refer to Mexicans as Hispanics but as Latinos only because I got tired of my American friends of Mexican decent who said "Don't call me a Hispanic."

you need to prove someone is talking about people of a different skin color and you haven't. People could mean actual Mexican citizens or they could mean any nonamerican immigrating through the Mexican border. You're crying wolf after an assumption.
