The drywall trade is a perfect example.

When the invasion from Mexico began during the early 1970's the first trade the illegal aliens went after in the construction industry in Southern California was the drywall trade.

If you remember back then during the 1960's and early 70's the drywall trade was dominated by white and black Americans who worked in a crew of three. Usually two hanging lids while the other hanged walls.

The Mexican illegal alien drywallers had to work in a five man crew to be as productive as the American drywallers. By 1980 there weren't to many white Americans hanging drywall and all of those black American drywallers found themselves on welfare for the rest of their lives.

Then the illegals went after the roofing trade and roofing contractors workmans comp insurance skyrocketed.

Immigration has historically been one of the building blocks that resulted in the greatest nation on god's green earth. Fort Christina in present-day Delaware was also known as "New Sweden" around 1640.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Christina

There were Jews, Swedes, Dutch, Blacks, French, and of course Brits, and of course indigenous natives ('Indians') all having an impact on the experiment. When asked by his agent about what kind of workers he wanted for construction projects at Mount Vernon, George Washington replied. ""If they be good workmen, they may be from Asia, Africa, or Europe; they may be Mohammedans [Muslims], Jews, or Christians of any sect, or they may be Atheists..."

All that said, I believe that immigration needs to be metered in order to maintain our culture and way of life. In 1970 the percentage of foreign-born people in the US. was 4.7%. I was a child then, and had lots of foreign-born friends. They had no choice but to form bonds with native-born people and assimilate, since they were less than one of twenty.

The number has steadily inclined since then. Today roughly 1 in 7 in the US are foreign-born.
    http://www.breitbart.com/big-govern...erican-population-growth-7-to-1-through-2065/

I'd like to see the number somewhere between 5 and 10 percent. I definitely would not want to see it anywhere near 0%.

When in the Sates managing my vast estates I hire illegal Mexicans whenever I can. They work harder than Yanks, are friendlier with better food and great stories about rednecks we can swap and I can pick them up right after Mass at the local church.

Yet another person who does not understand basic economics. GDP per capita is the real measure of wealth and living standards. Not GDP. A country with decreasing population and therefore decreasing economy is not getting any worse. A country with decreasing GDP per capita is. Demographic decrease may have some bad consequences if it is too fast, mostly due to pensions, but it is far from a big economic issue. And there will not be any big labor shortages. Less people means less labor available but also less labor needed. It is all relative, absolute size of the population does not really matter much.

If you really want to help the US economy, then you should support immigration of only those who have higher than average income. That is a sensible policy. Not open borders.

The OP set up a nice straw man argument.

No one says immigration is bad. Conservatives argue that unchecked, illegal immigration is bad. Huge difference.

    Typical liberal crap.

Technically, INA 214b states otherwise. Any alien coming here is defined as an immigrant unless they can demonstrate that they are here "temporarily." Illegal aliens are immigrants, but the immigrants have not gone through the proper procedures to come here. Thus, labeling illegals aliens as immigrants is correct from a movement of people issue, but because the illegal aliens did not go through the proper procedures, then their status is not in line with the law.

Actually Ann Coulter will disagree with you, so will NumbersUSA, CIS, Donald Trump (if you take his immigration plan seriously), other nativists, etc. And most are conservative, politically speaking.

Your joking right? So tell me, how do you define culture. In San Antonio, there is something called Fiesta, in San Francisco and other large cities, they celebrate Chinese New Year, Mid Autumn Festival, etc, or how about Oktoberfest or Saint Patrick's Day. All of this is part of local culture which comes from culture from other areas.

Because most of them are either US citizens or legal, permanent residents who have not broken any US laws on US soil. Tracking them is prudent, but when there is enough evidence to directly link them to a potential crime, then that is where the law is allowed. Other than that, there is something about freedom of expression which is guaranteed by the Constitution.

You contradicted yourself big time. First you say it would be better if we could choose who came here and then you poo poo the idea of securing our border. Really?

If you paid attention to Trump you would hear him say the wall would have a big beautiful door on it. That means securing the border is a crucial in controlling who immigrates here.....derp!

People are absolutely clueless about this topic.

It isn't so much culture as Americans like any excuse to get wasted. We celebrate Cinco de Mayo more than Mexicans....then there is Saint Patrick's day.....excuses to party.

It is still culture though. Some may view it simply as a party, but others view it way differently. With Fiesta in San Antonio, it is not as simple as a party. Although there are parades, Taste of San Antonio, and other events, there are events that celebrate the Mexican and Texan heritages together.

.....with lots of drinking. I know that culture very well. Even kids birthday parties=excuse to get drunk. I am not complaining at all. I actually enjoy it. If someone wants to call it culture then so be it. I will bring a loaded cooler!

In Germany, it is customary to have alcohol with lunch or dinner, but here it is customary to have soda, tea, or water, generally, with lunch or dinner. We even have rules about not drinking on the job whereas Germany does not generally.

The point is that culture is not simply defined as an excuse for partying or drinking. For Irish Catholics to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, it is a time to go to Church, pray, and follow the teaching of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

You have a very superficial view of what you think culture is and do not understand the deeper meanings of that culture.

Those that immigrate for peaceful purposes such as employment, to be with family, and to adopt our nation as their homeland are beneficial to our nation.
Those that enter the country for nefarious criminal purposes are detrimental to our nation.

When we sort out our immigrations laws based upon the above criteria then we won't have 11 million illegal/undocumented immigrants that are beneficial to our nation.

While I'm very much "pro-immigration" this argument fails.

Artificial Intelligence and Technology (AI&T) is systematically making human labor obsolete. The problem is not "production" but instead "consumption" and it's an economic problem. As human labor becomes obsolete, understanding that it's the labor that provides income, the ability to purchase (consume) is reduced and will eventually create and economic crisis. This is not an immigration issue but instead a much deeper economic issue that few seem to realize.

    Re: The Indians
I don't think America can handle anymore 7-11 stores. If Indians were so productive, then why is India such a chaotic hell-hole. For god's sake, India still has leper colonies. The majority of people live on less than $2 per day. Hunger is still a problem in India, and India is still a racist society with a blatant caste system. I'm sorry, but watching documentaries on Indians is like watching people in loony bin.

As for most of the upper-tiered 'minority' households with substantial household incomes--like Filipino/Americans. Their houses often include extended families, all contributing to the household incomes. And let's not forget that most Filipinos are in affirmative action jobs working in civil service. Also, I see many elderly Filipinos (who barely speak English--if at all) on food stamps and living in subsidized housing. If Filipinos have the second highest household income, why are so many of the elderly on social services. When their relatives sponsor their immigration to America, they are supposed be financially responsible for them. That is not happening with the Asian populations. Besides, as mention before concerning the Indians, if Filipinos were so productive then why is the Phillipines such a hell hole. While we import many health care workers with 'master's degrees' (who take their tests in the Phillipines, but couldn't pass the test given in America, their health care system is a disaster. They have extremely high rates of TB still in the Phillipines. I worked with a Filipino 'doctor' who couldn't pass the national exam. He was an arrogant (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) who blamed the American system for his smack down. He didn't think he should have to take the test in America.

What I am saying is that the numbers are deceiving. I think if you looked behind the numbers, you will find there are extenuating reasons behind the supposed success of many of these third worlders--affirmative action being the number one reason for many of their successes.

I have seen manufacturing evolve first hand for a few decades now. While automation has transformed many tasks it isn't the only issue. Immigration is very much an issue. Some naive folks actually believe that there are millions of illegals here "picking fruit". Not true. There are also people here on visas that have replaced citizen workers.

When speaking about immigration those who lump illegals together with those doing it legally, are being disingenuous and intellectually dishonest.

Don't play that game like politicians do. It only proves you're not here to be honest. You're trolling, like a politician.

Anyone who claims millions of poor, uneducated families is good for the nation is lying. Lying out of ignorance or lying due to trolling.

The only people we need are those who can afford it, and have skills we need. Agricultural needs can easily be taken care of legally. Everyone knows that.

Illegal immigration is destroying the nation. We simply don't have enough producers to take care of the takers. Combined with increased crime, blight, lack of interest in assimilating, you've got problems.

From your statement alone, I seriously doubt you know the Latino culture. There are differences between Mexican, Brazilian, Argentinian, Puerto Rican, and Cuban cultures. There are also similar aspects because they are based from Spain/Portugual influence, but each developed independently from each other.

None of which is based on culture per se. There is dog fighting here, but more than likely, you will have very wealthy people, including some famous athletes, involved in that. In addition, once caught, we have laws as well. In Oklahoma, they busted a chicken fighting ring. The perputrators were not immigrants, but your run of the mill farmers and young folk who thought this was entertaining.

What you are citing is more often than not internet gossip.

That is a nice textbook answer but I am going from experience of living and working in Mexico. I have family from South America as well but do not let me interfere with your Wikipedia experience.
