That's because white men have historically held others down. Women are not a minority, but also have only been allowed to go to college for what 60 years or so? And much of that time it was still seen as a waste of time because you don't need college to be a stay at home mom.

We are finally at a point where women and minorities are getting higher education in science, so yes the contribution will change. Not to mention women and minorities have always been there along with white men, but rarely received credit. I just completed a master's degree in a scientific field and we had 18 women and 2 men, and one of those men was gay. So the day of the white straight man in a lab coat is over.
