Apart from banning the Muslims, we need to closely monitor home grown Muslims and show zero tolerance the moment they show hate to the USA and Israel. Terrorism deserves no mercy. Trump is right and so is Netanyahu.
My own thought is that both Muslims and Jews/Israelis need to be closely monitored with zero tolerance shown for terrorism.
Jews and Israelis do not commit terror against the USA. Stop being ridiculous. They are our allies. But I agree with you about monitoring the Muslims. Part of your post is therefore acceptable and correct.
Havnt gone thru the whole thread but the answer is very simple: "If they cannot be properly vetted, then dont let them in!" Must sign an allegiance to this country and a promise not to let their offspring be radicalised---if so, then as Americans, turn them in !
Why is it a mistake? I gave reasons as to why it is a mistake to ban one group of people yet you offer nothing to back up your reasons.
Bring it on cowboy. Your question has nothing to do with the Poll Question. My response has exactly to do with the poll question. Can you actually respond to what I said instead of going on about a separate issue? A small group of any religious or cultural group can cause problems down the road. They can also be a great benefit. Two points here. First, not all Muslims are involved in terrorist activities. I have seen stats to suggest from .005 % t0 2% depending on which source. Both are pretty low. Also as far as terrorism in America which includes mass shootings, Islamic terrorism is very small. Why not hold the same regard for other ethnic groups, races and gender.
You don't get to say (*)(*)(*)(*) about what goes on in the US. Stick to your milk in a bag Canuck! - - - Updated - - - Shush! Common sense has been know to cause traumatic migraines in liberal progressives.
Islamic terrorism is an international threat not just in the USA! It is more of a threat in Europe than it is in the USA. Canada don't care about your Trump you can have him but we do care of Islamist terrorism.
Indeed, it's a minority opinion among leftists. It will probably not surprise you that there is strong groupthink on the left, just as there is strong groupthink on the right. From what I can see, there is a growing discontent with this view, not necessarily among liberals but primarily in the far left. Google Zizek + immigration, for instance. It is bizarre for immigration to be held up as an absolute value. Persoanally, I am appalled to see European liberals dig in their heels on this one issue, while ignoring other pressing problems. It is almost as though they are compensating for their failure to protect their own working class, the traditional mandate of the Left. Rationally, immigration must be balanced against public safety and other legitimate considerations. In my view, standard liberals are not really part of the Left. My political axis falls along different lines The real distinction is not between liberals and conservatives (who are two sides of the same coin), but between liberal capitalists (Romney, Obama, Bush, Clinton) and 'radicals.' By radical, I mean not some kind of frothing madman, but somone who rejects the assumptions of liberal capitalism, either on the right or the left.
The question was whether or not the US should ban muslims from entering the country. As you're not a US citizen I say to you......take off ya hoser!
Look at all the current conflicts in the world: http://www.warsintheworld.com/?page=static1258254223 I'd say at least 3/4 of them involve Muslims. So it is obvious Muslims are a problem in every country they inhabit. Almost every majority Muslim nation has horrific civil rights. They are doing almost every terror attack in the West. Unlike other thugs operating in the world, they have their Koran whereby they are given exact instructions to kill and take land over from the infidels. Yes Blacks in the West do kill anywhere from 5 to 10 times as many people as they do Whites. And in "mass shootings" Blacks also kill 5 times more often than Whites in these "mass shootings." But most are not Muslims---yet. And they are not using the Bible or Buddist or Hindu teachings to justify their acts of terror. So, if the OP question is about immigration bans and therefore wanting less Muslims---what percent of Canada do you want to be Muslim in 10 or 20 years?
I don't believe Islam is compatible with western civilization. The record of Muslims integrating peacefully and assimilating in non Muslim countries and cultures isn't great. So far as I can tell, the best indicator of how well behaved Muslims are in a majority-anything-else country is the percentage of the population. If it's a very low percentage, great neighbors. High percentage, aggressive and assertive against the dominate culture. The US has less than 2% Muslim so I'd say we're in the great neighbors stage. France has over 7%. Those neighbors? Not so great...higher than that, you need an oppressive state to keep them in line. I'm not interested in having an oppressive heavily policed state just so I can also have "diversity." It's not worth it. But like I said, Canada? Knock yourself out.
You must be old. I don't mean that as a personal attack or anything but I've noticed that the divide on this issue on the left seems to run along age. Your old time leftists were class struggle types who were concerned about the workers this and workers that, but the sixties birthed a new version, the identity politics left, in which the primary purpose of society was divide up the spoils along gender lines, racial lines, and any other dividing line you could make up. I saw this played out over the past year by Bernie Sanders. He comes from the traditional class struggle type of leftist thought. In August he had an interview with Vox and he triggered those children like crazy with his talk of protecting workers from foreign competition (meaning foreign workers) and limiting immigration to buoy wage rates. Compare that to the Bernie Sanders at the Univision debate. He's now changed to agreeing with Hillary in favor of a wet foot/dry foot immigration; if you get here, you can stay, and so can any family members you have who have not made it here yet. Basically open borders. But that is where the left is now. You, are like a neo-reactionary at a Weekly Standard dinner; you don't fit in with the others.
And as a Canadian I say no banning of all Muslims but enforcement of zero tolerance against radical Muslims, regulate the entry of Muslims, deny all radical Muslims entry into the USA and monitor all American Muslims. As a Canadian I say keep all radical American Muslims away from Canada!
I can't vote yes or no because Liberty is an unalienable Right. OTOH, there exists a state of war between Muslims and non-Muslims sooo... I think we should have a formal Declaration of War, deport Muslims and not allow any more in until the terrorist branch of that religion is eradicated (regardless of how long it takes.)
Lavon Affair. USS Liberty. the USA should have punished Israel severely for these acts of terrorism, perhaps even with an act of Liberation.
I would support a temporary ban on everyone coming from Syria. But not from our allies like Egypt, Jordan, Saudi, Oman, Kuwait, UAE, Turkey, etc. no. Notice I mentioned countries and not Muslims. There are a lot of our allied armed forces that come to this country for training, what would you do with them? Are they good enough to fight side by side with us overseas, but not good enough to come here for the training they need?
I think a requirement that all immigrants have to eat a pork sandwich would actually be more effective.
We should make sure we're not seen as bigots because that matters more than social cohesion. Just ask the commuters in Brussels.
I say no because it is far more likely that I will be killed by an American who identifies as a Christian or an atheist than by an American who is a terrorist or a Muslim forgin national. Islamic extremist violence accounts for a very small number of murders in America each year. As such I see a ban to be an overreaction. I also see a ban as a propaganda opportunity for our enemies.
