'Distant pass': Icarus asteroid to sail past Earth in closest approach for 75yrs

The asteroid Icarus will breeze past Earth on Tuesday at a distant pass of five million miles. It will be the asteroid's last fly-by until the year 2090.

Although Icarus is named after a Greek mythological character that flew too close to the sun, it's actually flying closer to Earth this time around.

But there's no need to worry, according to NASA, because the distant pass will still be taking place quite far away at 21 lunar distances.

Asteroid Icarus will safely pass by Earth at more than 21 times the distance of Earth to the moon on June 16, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said.

Icarus is expected to skim past Earth at 10 p.m. GMT.

The Slooh community observatory will provide a live stream of the asteroid's approach, using robotic telescopes and cameras. However, the space rock will be too dim to be seen through most backyard telescopes, the observatory said on its website.

January 11th, 2016 - NASA is taking the potential threat posed by near earth objects (NEOs), such as asteroids and comets, more seriously than ever and has established the new Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO).

The space agency says the new office will oversee all of its efforts in finding and characterizing all celestial objects that travel close to Earth as they orbit the sun. It will also coordinate any actions within and outside of NASA that may be needed to respond to potential threats of impact. Asteroid detection, tracking and defense of our planet is something that NASA, its interagency partners, and the global community take very seriously, said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate in a NASA press release.

Grunsfeld went on to say that while there arent any impact threats right now, events such as the huge meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk in 2013 along with the recent close approach of the Halloween Asteroid serve as reminders of why its important close approach remind us of why we need stay on guard and keep our eyes to the sky. Scientists say that the space object that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013 was about 17 meters across and had a mass of roughly 10,000 tons. It was reported that the blast shattered windows in about 7,000 buildings in the area and injured around 1,700 people, mostly due to flying shards of glass.

With projects such as its Near-Earth Object Program, NASA has already been involved with finding and tracking NEOs and has been a part of international efforts to develop methods to protect Earth from significant threats of impacts. The space agency says that the new Planetary Defense Coordination Office will improve and ramp up those efforts by working with other U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as similar agencies from other countries. Near earth objects are found by astronomers who use a worldwide network of ground-based telescopes as well NASAs space-based NEOWISE infrared telescope.

The Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) 1 telescope in Hawaii has produced the most near-Earth object discoveries of the NASA-funded NEO surveys in 2015.

Once an object is detected NASA says that its Center for NEO Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory then will precisely predict its orbit and then will monitor its movements. NASA says since more than 90 percent of near earth objects larger than 1 kilometer have already been discovered, the space agency will focus on finding objects that are about 140 meters about the size of an American football field or larger. So far, astronomers have discovered more than 13,500 near-Earth objects, which vary in size from small boulders to those that are hundreds of kilometers in diameter. NASA says that about 1,500 near earth objects are spotted every year.

This is good to see happening. I hope space colonisation will take off soon as well! I hear this and that about going back to the moon and finally sending people to the Red Planet, and I'm anxious to see real progress in this area. Of course, tracking and defence against space impactors will be important not only for Earth, but for future space colonies as well! Might be we'll need to nudge an asteroid or comet to avoid a Martian or Lunar impact...

Tantalizing Remains of an Ancient Earth-Shaking Asteroid
May 16, 2016 - Tiny glass beads scientists have discovered on what used to be ocean floor tell the tale of a giant asteroid that hit the earth billions of years ago.

The beads are called spherules and scientists from the Australian National University found them in far Northwestern Australia. The asteroid 20 to 30 kilometers across would have left a crater hundreds of kilometers wide when it hit.

That's a big asteroid

A rock that size would also, have triggered "earthquakes orders of magnitude greater than terrestrial earthquakes," according scientist Andrew Glikson. "It would have caused huge tsunamis and would have made cliffs crumble." The debris from such a huge impact Glikson says would also have spread around the world. But the constant movement and volcanic activity of our home planet would have obliterated any clues to where it hit.

The oceans of the moon, called mare are the remains of similar sized rocks that hit our lunar companion between 3.8 and 3.9 billion years ago, so it makes sense that a few would have been pulled to earth. So instead of looking for craters, the scientists looked for the vaporized materials that would have been thrown into the atmosphere and coated the planet.

What they found were these tiny spherules of glass, heavy with metals like platinum, nickel and chromium that match up with the elements we find inside most asteroids. Scientific dating methods put the impact date at about 3.46 billion years ago. Glikson has been looking for impacts like these for 20 years and he has found about 17, but he thinks there could have been hundreds, some strong enough to change the way the earth evolved.

May 13th, 2016 - According to most scientists, Earth was formed between 4.5 and 4.6 billion years ago after gravity forced gas and dust left over from the creation of the Sun accreted into an object called a planetesimal.

Over time, the planetesimal continued to gather more and more material and eventually became a planet. Scientists say heat produced by this formation process caused our early planet to melt. The heat separated Earth’s material into layers with heavy matter such as iron sinking down to the center of planet to form its core. Lighter and less dense material such as silicates floated above the core, subsequently forming what would become the Earth’s mantle and crust. As the planet evolved, the mantle continued this process of melting and separating with heavier remnants sinking downwards and lighter material rising toward the top to form the Earth’s crust.

It’s thought this process, over the years, changed the chemical composition of the mantle to a point where any of the original ancient mantle material dating back to the core’s formation may have completely disappeared. Now a consortium of US and Canadian research institutions say they have found two ‘birthmarks’ of silicate material from Earth’s mantle that may have formed when our planet was a mere 50 million years old. Writing in the journal Science, the researchers say they’ve found clear signatures of this unique silicate material in comparatively young rocks from two locations that are a long distance from each other.

One of the samples of the ancient material came from Baffin Island, which is located off the coast of northern Canada, while the other was found in the Ontong-Java Plateau just north of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The volcanic rock containing the primitive mantle signatures are known as flood basalts and were created about 60 to 120 million years ago by massive lava eruptions. What led the researchers to detect the primordial mantle material in the volcanic rock was a profusion of an isotope of tungsten called tungsten-182.

Scientists say this tungsten isotope is created when an isotope of the element hafnium (hafnium-182) undergoes radioactive decay – changes in its elemental composition as it gives off radiation. According to the researchers, the radioactive decay of hafnium-182 into tungsten-182 takes place so quickly – about 9 million years – that differences in the amounts of tungsten-182 compared to other tungsten isotopes can only be due to processes that took place very early in the history of our Solar System.

NASA asteroid probe may find clues to origins of life on Earth
September 6, 2016 - A U.S. space probe was cleared for launch on Thursday to collect and return samples from an asteroid in hopes of learning more about the origins of life on Earth and perhaps elsewhere in the solar system, NASA said on Tuesday.

A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket was scheduled to blast off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida to dispatch the robot explorer Osiris-Rex on a seven-year mission. United Launch Alliance is a partnership of Lockheed-Martin and Boeing. Osiris-Rex is headed to a 1,640-foot (500-meter) wide asteroid named Bennu, which circles the sun in roughly the same orbit as Earth. Scientists estimate there is a one-in-800 chance that Bennu might actually hit Earth 166 years from now.

Heating from the sun gently pushes the asteroid, and charting its path is among the goals of the $1 billion mission. The U.S. space agency also hopes Osiris-Rex will demonstrate the advanced imaging and mapping techniques needed for future science missions and for upcoming commercial asteroid-mining expeditions. Osiris-Rex is expected to reach Bennu in August 2018 and begin a two-year study of its physical features and chemical composition. The solar-powered spacecraft will then fly to Bennu's surface and extend a robot arm to collect at least 2 ounces (60 grams) of what scientists hope will be carbon-rich material.

The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft which will travel to the near-Earth asteroid Bennu and bring a sample back to Earth for study into the origins of life.

"We're going to asteroid Bennu because it's a time capsule from the earliest stages of solar system formation, back when our planetary system was spread across as dust grains in a swirling cloud around our growing protostar," lead researcher Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona told a prelaunch news conference on Tuesday. Inside the developing solar system, small rocky bodies were beginning to form, many of them studded with water ice and organic materials, which are key compounds that may have made Earth habitable or even given life its start, Lauretta said.

If all goes as planned, the capsule containing samples from Bennu will be jettisoned from the returning Osiris-Rex spacecraft on Sept. 24, 2023, for a parachute descent and landing at the U.S. Air Force Utah Test and Training Range. Osiris-Rex is the latest in a series of missions to asteroids that began with the 1991 flyby of asteroid Gaspra by NASA's Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft. Japan's Hayabusa 1 probe managed to return a few tiny grains of asteroid Itokawa to Earth in 2010, the first asteroid sample return mission. A follow-on mission, Hayabusa 2, is underway. The Osiris-Rex launch was set for between 7:05 p.m. and 9:05 p.m. on Thursday (2305 to 0105 GMT on Friday).

The user claimed he was unable to provide photographic and video evidence of the alleged UFOs because personnel is not allowed to bring phones and cameras to the site. His message, that spread like wildfire amongst the ever-inquisitive community of extraterrestrial hunters said, I am a welder at Kennedy Space Center and before launch a lot of us were noticing strange lights in the sky above the pad. About 20 minutes before launch there was an impression in the clouds of an oblong shape 3 white lights appeared and then just disappeared with a blink of an eye. Soon UFO hunters and allied conspiracy theorists crowded the virtual space with their two bits of wisdom and comments. The video footage of the failed launch posted online showed a strange object that can be seen flying towards the rocket before and then several times after the explosion, capturing the attention of online truth-seekers, despite earlier claims that it could have been a drone that destroyed the rocket, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk continued to insist that the cause was yet unknown.

A small, silver shape that climbed to at least 2000 feet in less than one second can be found soaring over the flames, leading to rumours that it was a flying saucer. The theory-pushers were unmoved by SpaceXs statement that read, We are currently in the early process of reviewing approximately 3,000 channels of telemetry and video data covering a time period of just 35 to 55 milliseconds as part of an investigation with the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, and the U.S. Air Force to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Israeli communications satellite operator Spacecom saw a one-third drop in its value after Amos-6, its satellite on the SpaceX Falcon 9 was destroyed in the explosion. Shares plunged to a 10-year low of 49 percent, and Facebook and France-based satellite provider Eutelsat have announced the cancelling of service agreements with the firm. David Pollack, Spacecom Chief Executive Officer said, We are actively seeking alternative options for satellite providers following the loss, including building a new satellite, which may take an estimated 24 months.
