The Alt Right is big in the news, but what is it?

Not quite. If viewed from the view of the outside looking in via the media, sure that's what one might think. But if you're at all involved or observe the alt-right in social media, it's poised to ignite another civil war in the Right. If you want evidence of that, look at Paul Joseph Watson and his response to Richard Spencer after the video from the Atlantic. And then observe the reaction from alt-right to Paul Joseph Watson and others who criticize the alt-right from within the Right. Left wing political correctness brought people of the conventional right to the alt-right, but the alt-right are a purest group. In the days since the Spencer video, the alt-right is purging itself of "cuckservatives", "alt-light", and other groups they consider a detriment to their goals. Much of this feud can be seen on various Youtube videos and social media posts.

From the reactions and looking at posts it's clear what the alt-right is. A white nationalist group at its core, one that ignores whatever stigma placed on the term and attacks those who wish to stigmatize them. This is not to say they're "racist" as their arguments are very clear in that if other nations like China can have an ethnic identity, why not western, white, European nations. Then there's what they call the "JQ" or "jewish question" in that they like to use ((())) to expose a jew in their ranks. They do this with Milo Yiannopoulos and others who've claimed to be alt-right.

 

Standard conservatives are white nationalists?

 

Clearly not considering how the conventional right is attempting to isolate from the alt-right.

Makes as much sense as any other attempt at a definition. They might be seen as an intellectually aggressive response to PC culture and far-left politics we've had of late. Kind of like militant atheism taking a more outspoken stand against the Religious Wrong. It's natural and to be expected, one way the pendulum is beginning to swing right again.

 

My understanding, which will be different because I'm not in America, is that the Alt Right is the secular youth arm of the Right. That is to say, it's all those young and youngish, non-conservative, liberal, educated (or just ambitious) people of all colours and sexualities, whom progressive leftists wish didn't exist .... because they put the lie to the hackneyed model of the 20thC conservative.

I also understand that they're on the right for economic and libertarian reasons. It has nothing at all to do with social conservatism.

 

The part you missed, or are intentionally omitting, is that it centers upon fake news, innuendo is its' goal, the more people you got believing erroneous information the more difficult it is to determine what is true

It's definitely NOT old school conservatives. It's a predominantly young movement, and they're anything but socially conservative. It's good to see some of my fellow lefties prepared to at least try and keep up with the rapidly changing political landscape.

 

The alt-right attracted liberals, yes. But there's a purge going on in the alt-right of those who joined under anti SJW sentiments.

All true. But the steady and committed young liberals (like Mr Shapiro) will remain as drivers of this movement. Some are now talking about a possible future third party made up of the Alt Right and the disillusioned left. There are plenty of both in 2016, so why not.
