    I spent time in Afghanistan.

I found the majority did not support the extreme beliefs and wanted just what most people wanted. To be able to care for their families and not have to worry about being persecuted because of their religion or how they interpreted a religious text.

I have been chastised for this before but we can look to the West as to why there are enough extremist to be a concern.
Starting with the French and English moving on to the US when it stepped up to be the dominating world power.

The US has continually supported leaders that did not live up to the standards of civil rights and freedom.

A prime example is Saudi Arabia. Ruled by people that imprison people for 15 years for just stating their disagreement with a policy. Nothing more and they get charged with things like terrorism just for voicing their opinion.

The US and British played a large role in creating the Iran we have today. The legal government was looking to gain more control of their greatest natural resource, oil. They thought they were being ripped off and wanted to see the financial statements of a British Company controlling the majority of their oil. The request was refused. The Iran government then kicked out all foreign oil companies. The UK responded by sanctions and the US by a CIA assisted coup.

The result was a dictator supported by the US was put into power. Like all governments run by someone with almost complete power they tend to turn a little extreme. People push back, the government pushes back. This continues and you get a government that is extremist supporting extremist. In this case those extremist are Muslims since a good method of control is controlling religion.

Looking at an extreme example. One of Hitler's first moves when he received power was to gain control of the Church.

No it doesn't sound that at all. You didn't even hear it the first time. You're hyping it up to make your life seen more exciting.
