They surely were as they were taught riding horses and shooting arrows since the early childhood and had great tactics, and could endure a lot, including long distance raids but in a close handfighting...Numbers still matter. The mongols were quite a bit quicker and swifter, and could shoot down anyone with a bow.

And so they did, bringing half the world from China Great Wall to Central Europe to their knees. No argument there.

Genghis Khan united the steppe peoples of Mongolia, whose style of warfare was always formidable and effective. And after some eventually lucky success against Jin, he employed them as Siege Engineers and such, thus overcoming walled cities and fortifications.

Mongols outclassed every army hurled against them because Mongol army was more modern than all Medieval armies of the time. They pioneered aspects of warfare still used and studied today. Throughout much of the Middle Ages until advances in firearms technology, cavalry had the most advantage over infantry. Mobile warfare and lightning speed tactics were two of the advantages that put the Mongols in a different league from their opponents in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Mongol tactics are studied in Western military schools like West Point and the US Army War College and still employed to great efficiency on the modern battlefield. Since at least the late 19th century and today the tactics of the Mongol general Subetai is required reading for every would-be armored tank commander at West Point. The three main categories of Mongol warfare that is still part of every cadet curriculum are (1) extreme use of tactical speed and unity to ensure operational success, (2) understanding of logistical concerns, and (3) the use of psychological warfare as an offensive weapon.

Mongol tactical speed and logistical operations are still viewed with much envy by military commanders today and speed in particular is what made the Mongols very effective- speed of attack and speed of communication surpassed even that of the Romans.
