Out of interest - how do you differentiate between a reputable product that will live up to "miracle cure/prevention" i.e. Tetanus Vaccine and a bogus claim i.e. burying the patient up to their neck in goat manure to cure snake bite (don't laugh it was suggested at one time)

I am pretty sure that some vitamins need to be ingested every day because they water soluble. I think that includes some B complex vitamins and vitamin C.

But I really dont worry about it much. I render my own lard and will be finishing my smokehouse on the morrow. Just love cold smoked bacon!

Chicken is crap, especially when store bought. Smoking is good for you, as exemplified in the Woody Allen film "Sleeper" and glaciers tend to melt and grow back... why hasn't the 'research' been solidified?

Science is a religion being used to sway the masses to believe a political narrative, much the way the 'divinity of kings' was used several centuries ago. Useful idiots are indelible.

The 'study' about vitamins is flawed

Experts? RT.com are experts? LOL :roflol:

    From your own source:

Self pwnage is the best pwnage. In the future, make sure your source doesn't back up your opponents position! LOL

No fool would say a multivitamin would help someone who was eating properly and getting all the necessary nutrients in their foods. But the problem is, and we've beat this dead horse in this thread already, that most people DO NOT get the proper nutrition. That's like saying "A recent study shows diets don't do anyone any good based on the fact that diets don't do skinny people any good." Well no shiit sherlock. That's also not who diets were designed to help, either. If your study wasn't so stupid it would be funny.

And I must laugh at those who say stuff as stupid as this. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of Americans today, and the number 1 cause is poor diet. So when you come up with one example of someone who ate poorly and lived a long time, I can match you with 10,000 who died prematurely because of the same diet.

Not everyone dies who gets shot, either. But that surely doesn't make getting shot healthy.

In Wisconsin, heart disease is the number 1 killer. Your diet isn't doing you too good, it's killing your citizens. Your own state gov't agrees with me:

Yes because we should listen to people that push the horrible "food pyramid" for decades. Now all of a sudden they are "Oops! Don't listen to what we said about how to eat for the last 40 years. Listen to what we are saying now." You can take your government issued statements and shove them.

The best diet is to simply eat what you want to eat. People with bad genes who eat lots of junk food that will hurt them will die off sooner and there will be more people with good genes left. If we followed government advice then Japan would never have gained the ability to digest milk over time and now they are the only country in Asia that can digest milk as a population. According to you the Japanese government would have issued warning about drinking milk and its side effects and the people would have shunned it. Instead Japanese people added it to their diets because milk is (*)(*)(*)(*)ing AWESOME tasting and over time their bodies adapted. It's called evolution. Bodies adapt to diets all the time. The Inuit eat massive amounts of fats that would kill someone who didn't have their heritage but their bodies adapted to their diet just as anyones will. This is nothing more than fear mongering and scare tactics to elicit more control over people's lives.

For someone who has Libertarian in their screen name you sure are insistent on telling people what they should and shouldn't eat or if they should exercise or not. If they don't take care of themselves then let them deal with the consquences. There is no way that anyone can go through life and not know that eating lots of fattening foods is bad for you just as no one can claim that they didn't know that smoking is bad for you.

I never once said that people had to eat anything. That made your entire post irrelevant. Nice straw man.

I could believe this. Back when I was in grad school, I ate really poorly for about three years. I thought I would be fine because I was taking a multivitamin, but by the time I graduated I was basically suffering from malnutrition. The multivitamins seemed to do nothing! After I got out, I started eating lots of fruits and vegetables every day. I'm almost a vegetarian now and my health improved by a lot.

Study: Vitamin D could prevent common cold
Sun, Mar 19, 2017 - A study announced on Feb. 16 indicates that taking Vitamin D supplements can prevent respiratory tract infections such as colds and influenza, reigniting the debate on the effectiveness of non-prescription dietary supplements.

I know that with plants it doesn't matter if the fertilizer is natural or synthetic. And if a person doesnt get vitamins in food the body still needs them. But a person can overdoseon some of them.

Vitamin and mineral micronutrients are absolutely essential. But from person to person, how can we ever know how much an individual actually needs? What percentage of vitamins/minerals we take are just passed through our system to the toilet? Do we know if we have too much of something where it potentially becomes toxic? And, from person to person, what does the data show happens to us during our lives if we are getting too little or too much vitamins/minerals? I personally do not take any supplemental vitamins or minerals, never have and probably never will. I eat plenty of all types of food, spend time in the outdoors, I'm not sedentary...and I have a high awareness of my body functions...for me this is enough...

They are beneficial if you are a very low calorie diet. On a regular balanced diet they are really not needed.

I had cracks at the corner of my mouth and my doctor's advise to put some medicine on it failed so I just lived with for a long time. Then my one day dentist tells me you have a B-vitamin deficiency. I started taking vitamins and the problem went away in a very short period of time. I wish i could fill in more details, but this was over 15 years ago.

I don't believe any of these studies. I think a person needs to study the topic of health & nutrition to the point that they would understand which vitamins they might be deficient in and only take those vitamins. For example, in winter time you don't get much sunlight due to being inside too much, take a Vit D suppliment.

So my experience proved to me Vitamins do work if you have a deficiency, but to load up on multi-vitamins for no reason, might not be a good idea.

The biggest problem I see is that most people are not going to do the proper research to properly educate themselves on this topic. That's why we need more low cost nutritional experts (not doctors) who can test and guide us. As I stated earlier, my OVERLY PRICED DOCTOR failed me as he knew practically nothing about proper diet & nutrition, but my dentist did and I solved the problem with a $5 bottle of vitamins.

How did this old thread get resurrected? Oh well, opinion hasnt changed much. Still believe taking multi vitamin supplements for general health is prob a waste of money, but not harmful. However taking extracts and oils and spices, etc., and thinking they're gonna cure something is downright dumb.

    No magic beans.

    :(

Oh wow, talk about an old ass thread.

Yep, multivitamins are pretty useless. Like I said 4 years ago, if you eat a healthy balanced diet and get the necessary nutrients from it, no need for a multi.

The most important things to your health are: genetics, diet, exercise, not smoking, drinking in moderation. Many people are Vitamin D3 deficient unless you live in Arizona or Florida. People don't get outside enough and get a moderate amount of sunshine on their skin. Particularly darker skinned people need more sun. Many urban black people are depressed from not getting enough sun. This is why Vitamin D3 is one of the only vitamins worth taking IMO.
