Pro argument: SSN Was not designed for ID, its ineffective and easily falsifiable. Anti Argument: National ID would be an invasion of Privacy and a overreach of govt, SSN, Drivers licenses, and Passports are all we need.
My feeling is that a national ID would just be way for Democrats to grant citizenship to illegal aliens. You know they gonna abuse it by giving one to whoever asks.
How would that work? If we wanted to, we could do that with SSN. Also stop straw-manning us. WE acknowledge the economic necessity of illegals here but also stress re-securing the border and fixing immigration. Not to mention if you grant citizenship to an illegal they are no longer illegal lmao chill Lets not focus on Identity politics because this has nothing to do with that and frankly your criticism really isn't valid or constructive. Its just idpol straw-manning and no logic used.
Someone watched CGP Grey this morning. I would say that drivers licenses and passport work for most people but there needs to be something for people that have no need of those like an ID card. This, however, should not mandatory.
You are the opposite of good. I would favor at least one year of mandatory military or public service and as part of that you would be given an ID that would also be your health card.
And then Democrats would say that coming here illegally is a public service and shift the ID printing press into overdrive. You know I'm right.
Or maybe conservatives don't want a national ID because it would make all those voter ID laws useless.
To keep America from being a 3rd World nation, we must have strong borders and strong consequences for criminals (illegal aliens, etc.) who violate them. Once the borders are better secured, then it is a matter of locating and weeding out all illegal aliens, regardless of their circumstances. There are much better people in the world that can come here that can speak English, share common values (not Islam or communism) and work the tough jobs without complaining.
How does being authoritarian, xenophobic and culturally bigoted make us stronger? Indeed, those three things are the main values of Third World countries and in fact define them. The strength of the USA, indeed its very essence since its founding, is that we are a FREE people and I notice that respect for this freedom is not mentioned even once as something which we need and should preserve. A national ID is among the first steps any nation takes to tyranny as it can be easily revoked and used for control. We need none and never will as long as we remain free citizens
I think we need an implantable chip tied to your national ID card which should hold on a chip all needed medical, employment and other information for easy access using the card and/or implanted chip.
If you ever watched the old Blade Runner Movie, then I believe is what you fantasize as the America you want. A rabble of poor people speaking broken English or many languages. I really don't want a National ID card, or chips or barcodes tattooed in my skin. Freedoms are for lawful American citizens. They are not to be automatically granted to illegal aliens, their Anchor Babies----and certainly for any person coming here that commits a crime. Federal law allows for citizenship to be revoked for those who came here legally, but broke too many laws. BTW, what is your favorite liberal, un-xenophobic nation with weak laws?
There is no evidence or logic that we would suddenly lose our title of victor of WWII. Also stay on topic lmao
Excuse me, but the Communists won WW 2. They won the most territory, controlled more of their defeated foes lands and peoples. Within a few years they had all of Eastern Europe, China, North Korea, North Vietnam. Please stay on topic.
It makes us stronger by increasing social cohesiveness. The resultant unity gives us a national purpose and direction. Third world countries are more characterized by extreme inequality and the masses living in poverty to support a kleptocratic elite, not by authoritarianism and xenophobia.
You weren't really arguing for national ID, but for cheap and dirty way of granting "citizenship." You're very slippery Krxv.
I think we need an implantable chip tied to your national ID card which should hold on a chip all needed medical, employment and other information for easy access using the card and/or implanted chip. (said tkolter) Great idea, children should have such a chip implanted in them at birth. If their parents agree. But there should still be no national ID card
Authoritarianism is the main reason these countries have extreme inequality and a kleptocratic elite. Xenophobia and cultural bigotry are used to justify this authoritarianism. We are well on our way to that. And I still fail to see how an oppressive government increases "social cohesiveness" nor how this should give us "national purpose and direction"
I would say it was the other way around: inequality leads to authoritarianism, which is needed to protect the elite when the inequality gets too stark. And how does xenophobia and cultural bigotry justify authoritarianism? Japan has both but is not notably authoritarian. And, yes, are well on the way to extreme inequality. Oddly enough, many of the elites are liberals, e.g. silicon valley entrepreneurs. (The Koch Bros. are the exception, of course.) The Democrats have lost any interest in the working class, finding its base in identity politics. They have been corrupted by the new high tech elites and other globalists. It was certainly easy for me to see Obama or Clinton ruling by diktat. But there are ample institutional safeguards to prevent a real dictatorship emerging in the US anytime soon. And then there is the fact the working class is too heavily armed and the rank-and-file army is drawn from the working class. But I would welcome your speculation as to how Trump, a guy who can't even get Obamacare replaced, is going to end up President-For-Life, or some such.
Agree that your SS number was never intended to be a safe, secure 'national ID' number in the sense we use today. I would be greatly in favor of a national ID system now that is as airtight, unhackable, and foolproof as possible. Then, going forward -- A person has no ID? Then, no job, no welfare, no voting, no NOTHING.
A national ID would be splendid. It should be issued to all citizens on their 18th birthdays and be the only thing needed for proof of citizenship at polling stations.
I voted keep SSN, although I gotta say, seems national ID cards are right around the next bend. Another thing I thought I'd never live to see. That list grows shorter.... Quicker..... With each passing month now it seems.
