Glad they cancelled her. Those mask-wearing thugs that Trump pays to start trouble (so the RW Fever Swamp can blame it on "The Left") will have to find another gig. Hopefully, Ann will use the unexpected break in her schedule to consult with Caitlyn Jenner's plastic surgeon and get that Adam's Apple shaved down.
The question is....if liberty University would cancel Hillary's speech because of violence by liberty students or violence by people bused in and allowed by liberty to commit violence. Do you advocate that violence should shut down political thought? Your posts certainly aren't condemning intimidation of political thought by violence.
this is getting ridiculous. She was, iMO, a bad choice ( mostly because there are far better representations of conservative views to invite), but once she is invited, she should allowed to speak. Protesters should march all they want outside the auditorium, but those who want to listen, should not have their access to her ideas denied. Its a college campus, you'd think everyone could handle this more maturely.
She's still going and speaking. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/uc-berkeley-calls-off-ann-coulter-talk-security-46895165 You 2 are beyond ridiculous.
This is sort of an interesting thread - nearly 50 posts of "progressives" name calling and whining. Basically acting like children. This is a good example of why you people are out of power and have lost so much credibility.
Coulter is always free "to give a speech at Berkeley". I am sure there are several coffee shops in town (that host open mike nights) that would love to give her a 15-minute spot reciting Mairzy Doats in a Baby Jane wig.
My son was in his senior year in college a few years ago. A combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, all he wanted to do was take the class and get the grade and graduate. He had gone through college without making an issue of anything that went on in the classroom. But the teacher in this class had started out on Day 1 by telling the class that she was a progressive liberal, and that's where her point of view was coming from. This didn't matter to him. Fine. No problem. Until ... One day she started telling the class that the U.S. was no better than any other brutal dictatorship in the world. She was telling the class what a horrible country the U.S. was. (Strangely enough, this was during the Obama years.) But my son had had enough. He stood up and said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!", interrupting the teacher in mid-sentence. She stopped talking. Silence in the classroom. And he went on to tell the teacher and the class some of the things he had witnessed with his own eyes in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it wasn't about battles and shootouts. It was about what he saw as to how the people treated each other in those countries. He spoke of the terrible, terrible violence he had seen perpetrated against women in those countries. It is violence and cruelty that amounts to some of the worst memories he has from those deployments - memories that he has very rarely spoken of. He spoke for 3 or 4 minutes to a stunned and silent classroom. And he ended it by telling that teacher how incredibly lucky she was to have born an American. Incredibly lucky. Then he sat down. She actually thanked him. After class, he told me about a dozen students approached him and thanked him for saying what he said. And so when I hear that Ann Coulter has to cancel out of security concerns, I am sad. I'm sad because these kids don't know, and don't care, about how lucky they are. They don't understand the privilege - and the responsibility to protect it - they have inherited. They are oblivious to the great gift of freedom that has been given to them through the sacrifices of others who came before them. And they seem to have no concept of the fact that their opposition to a point of view is outweighed by the sanctity of the right of a person to express that point of view. I don't blame the students, though. I blame their teachers and their university, for they have failed. You cannot mitigate that. They have failed. My two cents ... Seth
Ann has guts. She is still going there to speak. She was invited by two groups. She plans to deliver. She will talk about the book that currently is her 2nd ranked book on the list. I don't know how to explain Berkeley other than to say perhaps school tainted the city or the city tainted the school. When I used to go there, as a high school student, the school had a fine reputation. When Reagan was Governor, it seemed to get shot to hades.
The liberal left is always afraid of truth and reality........their whole worldview is based on lies and misconceptions.........that's why they are the ones always seeking censorship......sad really
If that's the reason and everyone knows it, then why doesn't Ann whine about that instead of free speech? OP is right.
Why is it "whining" to demand free speech from the self-anointed "origin of the free speech movement"? Face it, Leftists are bigots in the truest sense of the word. Democrat and Bigot and synonyms and this is just the latest evidence proving that.
Colleges have long lost standing as a educational institution. If you want secondary education, you're far better off going abroad.
Liberals don't like their ideas to be challenged. Their ideas don't stand up very well when scrutinized.
The speech isn't free, the speakers gets paid big bucks. That increases the price of tuition and puts an added financial burden on the students. If they want to learn about the person's views they can buy the person's books.
I assume she was invited to speak, yes? But a portion of the student body would prefer to see her prevented from speaking, yes? So how is this a promotion of free speech? It's worrisome when places of higher learning turn themselves into echo chambers which promote a singe viewpoint. The whole point is to be able to defend your views in the face of opposing views. Or at least that's what I thought the point was... Well said. Why not? I for one would love to see that happen. And I'm guessing that Hillary Clinton would be treated far better than Ms. Coulter is being treated by Berkeley. Please thank your son for his service. People need to start appreciating the gift that is the United States. For all its flaws and foibles, there is still nowhere on this earth that I would rather be. I thank God daily for the gift of being born American. It's a shame that so many of our places of higher learning, and the people instructing students in attendance at those institutions, think so poorly of our country.
I think it's right to dislike what Ann Coulter is saying and proposing. But by speaking, she will probably not attempt to forcefully prevent any leftist from speaking in public, or threaten any business not to give them a room for speaking. This is the real problem about Antifa violence. They are not "snowflakes", like the better part of the left. They insist on a monopoly of political opinion and enforce it with intimidation and violence (at least as long as they don't face proper resistance). They are a far-left guerilla, bound to rule society through an underground empire, and finally end up in a Soviet-style state. Their "no platforming" is fundamentally anti-democratic, no matter who is target. Remember, they already had Soviet Union flags in the April 15th Berkeley battle. Their anarchist imagery is just deception; in the end, they're ultra-authoritarian. Believe me, these have been a problem in Europe for many decades now! And don't believe their free speech infringements will only affect a few extreme positions! I think it's ok to protest Coulter, and even more to ask her a few nasty questions. But not using totalitarian methods, like threatening businesses or universities not to give her room.
The carnivorous plant has a point: Free speech should be allowed in public establishments of knowledge. Where you are right, however, is in pointing out that defenders of her "philosophy" can come in a less trashy package. That kind of people just want to give a show.
