Is the world’s most dangerous terrorist group headless? Mystery surrounds ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s death
Monday 12th June, 2017 - Several times in the past, the media has speculated about the death of one of the world’s most feared man, the man who laid the foundation of a terrorist outfit, that would grow to become the biggest threat facing the world.

However, each time the world media speculated about the death of the leader of the Islamic State militant group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - more atrocities followed and the man was proven to be alive and plotting much bigger attacks. Now, the Syrian state-run TV has claimed, more decisively this time, that al-Baghdadi has been killed in an air strike in the country. While authorities stated that the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa was bombed heavily overnight on Saturday, the report was followed by a statement in the terrorist group’s Amaq news agency, that revealed the damage. In July 2014, al-Baghdadi, proclaimed a “caliphate” that covered territory in both Iraq and Syria and reports of his death have been circulated even since then.

Soon after, ISIS claimed Raqqa as a key city in its self-declared caliphate and made it a hub for the organisation’s activities and attacks in Syria, Iraq and other regions. The terror group took over all levels of civil administration, rewriting school curriculums, establishing Islamic courts and creating police units to implement Islamic law - masterminded by al-Baghdadi. Earlier this year, U.S. and Iraq authorities believed al-Baghdadi had abandoned his fighters and gone into hiding as Iraqi forces continued to make inroads into Mosul. A month later, in April, a documentary called him the world’s most wanted man with a bounty of $25 million on his head. He managed to avoid capture by Iraqi special forces “by minutes” after escaping through a trapdoor.

Reports revealed details about his escape days after al-Baghdadi’s deputy Ayad al-Jumaili was killed in an air strike. In the process, Raqqa became the scene of some of ISIS’s worst atrocities, including gruesome executions, public displays of bodies and sex trafficking. Many governments, including Russia, Turkey and the U.S.-led coalition - have all been trying to rid Raqqa off the terror group, by bombing the ISIS in the city since 2014. Last year, in November, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed Arab-Kurdish alliance, launched a major offensive dubbed “Wrath of the Euphrates” to take Raqqa.

Worst affected were the estimated 300,000 civilians that were believed to have been living under ISIS rule in Raqqa, including 80,000 who fled there from other parts of the country. However, as the SDF drew closer to the city, thousands were smuggled out to territory newly captured by the U.S.-backed fighters. As the coalition achieved a set of victories in the surrounding province - the SDF sealed off the approaches to Raqqa city from the north, east and west. This week, the SDF said its forces entered the city from the eastern district of Al-Meshleb. Meanwhile, the U.S.-led coalition has been backing the SDF with air strikes, equipment and special forces advisers.

I do not think that the US Regional Commander can confirm or deny the Islamic State (DEASH) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (Sunni militant jihadist) has been killed in an air strike... It is (none the less) and interesting question.

We have seen this before, where a significant figure in various Jihadist, Fedayeen, Hostile Insurgent, Radicalized Islamist, and other Asymmetric Fighting activities has attempted to retire from the field and fakes his own death.

The US, when it has its own corroborating sources, is usually not shy about publicizing the kill or capture of terrorist leaders. But in this case, they have decided not to confirm or deny the veracity of the Syrian News and State Television report of al-Baghdadi's demise; either because US Intelligence actually does NOT know ⇔ or ⇔ because the US does not want to make a martyr of the leader.

June 16, 2017 - If Baghdadi is indeed dead, it will cripple ISIS, but it could also lead to a resurgence of an even more dangerous al-Qaeda

The news of the possible death of the leader of the so-called Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, no doubt filled most people with a certain sense of relief. It’s not often the death of a human being elicits such an emotion but Baghdadi, most sane people can agree, barely makes the homo sapiens cut. Nonetheless, our collective exhale may be premature. According to the Russian defence ministry, Baghdadi may have been caught by a Russian airstrike targeting a meeting of senior ISIS commanders south of Raqqa, the capital of the group’s self-declared caliphate, at the end of May. He was reportedly killed along with 30 other mid-level ISIS commanders and 300 fighters.

A man purported to be the reclusive leader of the militant Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has made what would be his first public appearance at a mosque in the centre of Iraq's second city, Mosul, according to a video recording posted on the Internet on July 5, 2014, in this still image taken from video. There had previously been reports on social media that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi would make his first public appearance since his Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) changed its name to the Islamic State and declared him caliph. The Iraqi government denied that the video, which carried Friday's date, was credible. It was also not possible to immediately confirm the authenticity of the recording or the date when it was made.

Putting aside the neatly rounded death toll figures, there are a few details which cast doubt on the reports. Why, for instance, are the Russians only now disclosing the alleged death, more than two weeks after the airstrike, adding they have not confirmed if it is true? If it is still unconfirmed, one would expect them to withhold information until more is known. Secondly, the location does not jibe with intelligence reports that Baghdadi was laying low in the desert along the Syrian-Iraqi border. This is what Iraqi intelligence officials told me recently and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed shortly after the Russian announcement. “The information is that, as of the end of last month, Baghdadi was in Deir al-Zor, in the area between Deir al-Zor and Iraq, in Syrian territory,” Rami Abdulrahman, the Observatory’s director said.

Regardless, most experts agree Baghdadi will be killed at some point, if he isn’t dead already. The last time he made a public statement was November last year, when he released an audio message calling on his fighters to hold ground against the advancing Iraqi army in Mosul, even as he himself made a dash for the desert. The question is: what will his death mean for ISIS and the broader jihadist enterprise?
