I didn't say the crosswalks aren't a waste of money. Clearly they are. It's just a pittance when compared to the things cities waste money on.

The article says they were composed of thermoplastic tile, not paint, to last longer. And does that price include any crosswalk signage? Not really defending it, but it is not as simple as it first sounds.

Still seems like a waste of money to me. I get that applying thermoplastic tiles is more expensive.

And it will last 10 yrs? My guess is it wouldn't last 10 days with Lowes cheap paint.

Could be a waste. Although there are two neighborhoods in the Miami area that became more gay oriented, and business and housing prices jumped in those areas because they took pride in the look of the homes and quality of the shops - so time might tell if it's a good investment or a waste of taxpayer dollars.

What about the type of paint normally used for roads and crosswalks? There's a concept!

If the area just looks like everywhere else, then it doesn't matter - if the neighborhood is trying to attract business dollars by branding themselves a certain way, with a certain look, then the investment COULD pay off in some way. Not saying it will, but if it's part of an overall plan, then maybe. People like to go to restaurants in themed neighborhoods (Chinatown, Design Districts, etc.) and it can increase traffic. Maybe.

They are a matter of public safety and should be done for the least expense practical.

So where are the heterosexual crosswalks?

A thermoplastic rainbow colored crosswalk for 196k is a matter of public safety? You're going to have to explanation for that one.

Would such a thing not be a waste of money?

Was reading about it in depth I saw there was a petition that circled around getting 22,000 signatures and installation that will last 10 years before any maintenance is necessary and the cost includes any maintenance in the meantime that requires the contractors come out and repair.

There's little parks and stuff all around Houston that cost a Fortune. There are monuments and playgrounds and all sorts of stuff that do serve a purpose to beautify areas so I suppose it may not be a waste of money maybe time will tell.

But this is a crosswalk, not a park. It is just a thing to let you know where to cross the road. It is utilitarian and has a purpose.

Well yes it does but there is no rule that states it cannot also be pretty. Crosswalks tend to be a place for quite a bit of asthetic flair.

I still think 196k is too high a cost

Well yeah. My city has one. It's where a lot of gay people live it's where gay people own a lot of businesses. Is China town or little Italy? There is a part of town here that is largely Jewish. I live in little Saigon.

    What is funny about that?
